Use PS3 to gain massive market share.
Written by ethana2 the 3 Mar 08 at 08:57. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As of now the Ubuntu PS3 port is struggling. I recommend that Canonical reassess the value of this port and really throw their might behind it. Not only that, but I think Ubuntu should use the opportunity to implement a few features that could make it the best gaming OS on earth, such as qjoypad integration and a gaming-mode wherein all processes not related to the task at hand are hibernated to swap while a game or, say, fullscreen blender, runs.

PC's generally have windows, mac generally have OSX. PS3s got nothin' ..yet.

Ubuntu 64-bit install should be hybrid 32/64, optimize most things for size
Written by theosib the 4 Mar 08 at 20:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Making every app on your system compiled for 64-bit is an over-optimization that buys you nothing but bigger binaries. The fact is, as long as your CPU isn't pegged at 100%, making most apps faster isn't going to be noticed. Aside from a few exceptions like office apps and web browsers that can occasionally be compute-heavy enough to impact responsiveness, most apps spend most of their time completely idle, only responding to keypresses and mouse clicks for tiny fractions of a second, passing off most of the heavy work to the OS or X11. Gentoo takes this overboard by having one single system-wide setting so that cron (which uses no CPU time for itself but launches other things) is optimized as aggressively as Ruby or Firefox or bzip2 which really need it. Since Ubuntu distributes mostly in binary form, there's no reason why different packages couldn't be optimized for their usage, most things optimized for size.

Of course, an exception to the exception are things like Firefox that take plugins. Yes, Flash is evil because it's proprietary, but if you want complete Flash support, you have to use Adobe's plugin, and you can only do that with 32-bit browsers. As such, it would make a lot of sense to default to 32-bit binaries for Firefox and Konqueror. Still, they need more optimization (renderers and javascript interpreters, etc.), so perhaps there should be multiple packages, optimized for different architectures, but all 32-bit.

The one major hole in my analysis is that having a hybrid system actually COSTS you disk space because you have to have duplicates of all your libraries. I don't have a good solution to that other than to say that it's moot as long as you include 32-bit browsers, because you need them anyhow. And I think there's good reason to default to 32-bit Firefox.

BTW, statistically, optimizing for size may hurt your application's performance a tiny bit (but again, if your CPU is 99% idle, you can't tell), but it also has the potential to make other apps faster. If you near the limits of your memory, smaller apps will mean less swapping. Saving only one page doesn't help much, but saving dozens of pages per app can make a difference.

Vlc as default for video instead of totem
Written by zannabianca the 15 Mar 08 at 19:08. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Totem is a good player, but vlc is much better. Please put the best software as default in ubuntu, because the problems of new users , coming from windows, will decrease a lot with vlc, that recognise more codecs than totem.

Make the System default to Metric Units
Written by ll the 5 Mar 08 at 15:06. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Most of the planet uses the Metric System. So why does the system default to imperial units? Make A4 the default paper size for printing, only two countries don't use it. Most people don't know what inches are so cm or mm should be the default.

More customization features in Gnome
Written by Carroarmato0 the 4 Aug 08 at 08:27. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
At this current stage, Ubuntu, and more precisely Gnome, lack some basic customizing features like: advanced options for screen savers, being able to change font colours, assign different wallpapers for different virtual screens, use more than one chrome ( colour ) for the panels and other basic settings that are taken for granted in other OS's.

I know that Gnome isn't aiming to become as option intensive as KDE, but these features together with an option in the "Theme" selector to revert back to the original default theme would make life easier for all users a like to tweak their desktops to be more personal.

Remove Ebay from default search engines list in firefox
Written by Auzy the 22 Mar 08 at 01:06. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Firefox. New
Based on idea 5321, by Eldmannen (about removing yahoo).

We should remove ebay from the default installed searches, because:
- It reduces competition with other auction sites.
- Recently there was a uproar about changes in ebay which make in some case make it unfair. I agree!
- Ebay VERY heavily pushes Paypal, which is acknowledged by many to be very dodgy. A lot of people know someone who has been screwed by ebay. And here in aus, I had to upgrade my account because they had a bug which prevented me accessing my money (which is very unprofessional). The freenet Project owner was also screwed by ebay (and it demonstrated they don't research at all claims made against customers), and another friend of mine was charged 2x the amount he was supposed to be receiving because someone used a stolen credit card against him (so seems they profit from illegal credit cards).
- If ebay was a bank, they would have a 24/7 riot outside their building by customers who were screwed.
- Ebay doesn't exactly listen to feedback. If are a typical large company, where you have no way of providing feedback (if you scream at them over the phone, maybe they will let you speak to a manager). But they clearly dont care much (no forums).

Its to our advantage to promote competition within the auction sites. More competition means lower costs for us, and better payment methods. We should try to encourage the development of a world wide auction site that is more consumer/seller friendly, that actually promotes active feedback and improvement.

There is nothing stopping a patch being applied to the firefox code to prevent ebay being a default search engine (and it shouldn't be hard to do).

Hire thousand of Chinese programmers
Written by Eldmannen the 7 May 08 at 14:02. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Canonical should hire a legion of tens of thousands of Chinese programmers.
It will be very cheap, and Chinese people are very intelligent and hard workers. Always top A grade students, perfect score on all tests.

In China people work 20 hours a day for only like $2 dollar a day.
We can employ them for only 6-9 hours a day with a great salary of $5-10 dollar per day.

It will be a great deal for them, because they can work less and earn more.

It will be great for us, because we can hire tens of thousand Chinese programmers, a whole legion of them and increase the development rate by a factor of a thousand.

Ubuntu team up with Apple
Written by kd7tck@msn.com the 8 Mar 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I firmly believe there is no reason why Ubuntu can't work together with a company like Apple. I would love to see some of apple's proprietary software ported to Linux. A more user friendly way of accessing Apple hardware would be nice too. The idea behind such a merger would be the idea of kicking Microsoft when it's down. With how poorly Vista is doing, now is the time to team up with all of Microsoft's rivals and kick Microsoft off it's high horse.

Linux Day! About Linux
Written by scrag_10 the 31 Mar 08 at 21:18. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Step 1: Choose a day, significant to Linux.
Step 2: Get as many Distributions to write official announcements about it.
Step 3: Parade in major Linux City. Distros get there own floats . To get mainstream news.

Online Events: Start an internet wide campaign, to include "About Linux" links at the bottom of websites.
example:

http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o112/scrag_10/FireUbu-1.jpg

There was a National News Broadcast in Canada about Fire Fox and that people were doing the work for free, and it's "Open Source," I think Linux should get the same treatment.

Other options instead of Linux/Ubuntu: Open Source day etc.

Make Drag&Drop possible everywhere in GNOME
Written by droetker the 25 Mar 08 at 21:19. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Gnome. New
Drag&Drop is such a intuitive and simple action - it must be promoted.
There are many things that already work in Ubuntu/GNOME/KDE with Drag&Drop, but there is much that can be improved:

- DnD an image from Firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not a textfile with the link to the homepage.
- DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the Firefox address bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
- DnD of devices onto the Pastebin should unmount them (like OSX)
- DnD of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
- fix the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesn't-accept-DnD-files issue: Launchpad bug #61237
- DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
- DnD a file into an edit box should insert a file:// link - KDE has this; Idea #3027
from Idea #4105:
- DnD Attachement from Thunderbird to Nautilus
- DnD Files From File-Roller to Nautilus
- DnD Picture from Nautilus to OOo

...and many more, please submit your ideas, I'll put them into the description!

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Ubuntu shouldn't be like Windows or OSX!
Written by k.y the 1 Mar 08 at 20:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many ideas posted here suggest that Ubuntu should look and|or feel like WindowsXP|Vista|OSX arguing that if so more Windows|OSX users would switch to Ubuntu. Often the suggested methods to achieve this are simplifying and|or even modifying Ubuntu in such a way that functionality, customization or adaptation get removed or limited. I don't think that this is the direction the Ubuntu development should follow. Because:

1. Creating a fool-proof system too often results in creating a systems for fools only. I personally think that Vista is the best example for this. By trying to make Vista more secure they made Vista more annoying. Starting to protect the system and the user's files from the user himself brought the system one step closer to foolproofness but also tends to be most irritating to the rest of us. Also by making everything as easy as possible alternatives, customization possibilities and adaptation are often eradicated.
2. By imitating Windows you most likely will attract Windows users. They will work with Ubuntu for a while then change back to Windows because you can't work on Ubuntu like on Windows and it also doesn't behave like Windows.

Windows and OSX might have some nice|useful features. And most of them are implemented into Gnome|KDE by now. So I think that we should stop with copying but start creating. Of course useful features should still be made available to Linux but the creation of new features should be more important. And by implementing new features, copied or created, functionality, customization and adaptation should never be limited. Also if it means that that particular feature might not be that "easy" to handle. e.g. providing a simpler GUI for apt is okay but replacing the package manager with a setup.exe like system would limit functionality.

Ubuntu should attract users with innovation, stability and possibility and not by providing "just an alternative". Constantly coping from Windows|OSX also demonstrates a certain inferiority. And Linux|Ubuntu are no more inferior. We slowly but surely caught up by now, so now we should start to overtake.

I don't want Ubuntu to be like Windows or OSX!
I want Windows and OSX to be like Ubuntu!

There should be a hardware compatibility tool that a user can run to determine how compatible their hardware is with Ubuntu or Gobuntu and also whether there is non-native support for it. People are lazy and will want to know whether it will work before even trying the LiveCD.

Make the computer give me answers
Written by Eldmannen the 26 Mar 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make a new application or improve Beagle, Tracker or Deskbar.

It do acronym lookups, math calculation, fact lookup, data generation, unit conversion, etc.

So that when I ask it something, it answers me.
RAM? = Random access memory
91*74-26 = 6708
Capital of Sweden? = Stockholm
22 inch in centimeter = 55.88 centimeter
chemical formula for water? = H2O
#0000ff = shows the color blue
01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 = hello
68 65 6C 6C 6F = hello
Hello in Italian? = ciao
Time in Tokyo? = 19:46
Weather in Paris? = 7°C, sunny.
rot13 hello = uryyb

So right from the Deskbar (or something) on the desktop, I can ask something, and it will answer me.

Give support to Fluxbuntu projecte (let them to enjoy Ubuntu official family)
Written by LitusMayol the 14 Aug 08 at 08:05. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We've KDE, GNOME, Xcfe... Why not Fluxbox?

I'm using an old laptop that was too old to work with Ubuntu, Kubuntu either Xubuntu. But at last I saved it by using Fluxbuntu. It isn't as userfriendly as officials Ubuntus are, maybe because they've no support.

Though it would be a good idea.

swapless ubuntu
Written by business_jade the 29 Feb 08 at 12:17. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On modern hardware the only reason swap is really needed is for suspending to disk so separate swap partition is complete waste.

It would be great to modify uswsusp (using kexec for example) to be able to use swap file on any regular partition to perform suspend2disk: 2.6 kernal already allow usage of dynamically allocated file on any partition as a swap file.

This improvement would also help to fix other suspend related issues and will make easier ubuntu-on-usb version.
