Do not install Ekiga by default

I dont think Ekiga is used by many people, perhaps we should consider removing it from the cd in favour for other software or more drivers?
I made up a quickvote at the ubuntuforums to see if I was the only one not using Ekiga.
Check the thread posted here for information and discussion.

Always give reason for need to reboot

Often after doing an update the double arrow icon will appear indicating a need to reboot. But if you click it, no reason is given as to why reboot is needed.
My idea is that clicking on the icon (or a "Why?" link for more information) should indicate why the OS thinks a reboot is needed so I can make a decision about whether to do it now or later.

Now when you use the Human theme, you're stuck with brown.
You should be able to pick a color of your own likening so that you can choose blue, green, yellow, white, orange, black, gray, purple, teal, pink or whatever you like.
Check this awesome artwork that I made!

* http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/7682/colortheme2ls1.png
* Steel
* Rainbow
From idea #9139 (merged):
Currently the theming is all over the place and changing one place does not affect any other. Although that kind of tweakability is great, most users just want different default colors. (pink, blue, brown, black)
What we should be having:
A: wallpaper - changes every release
B: color-theme - human (easily configurable by user!)
C: splash-canvas - human (we need to create this)
D: gtk-engine - clearlooks with B as default colors
E: kde-engine - oxygen with B as default colors
F: icon-theme - tango with color-filter using B
From these we could generate:

Rhythmbox : automatically update the music library

I have a music folder, and I put all my musics to it. When new music is added, I have to "re-import" my music folder for the musics to get added.
Would be great if Rhythmbox monitored my music folder for new files and automatically added them.
EDIT : There is a way to tell Rhythmbox to do it on the Settings menu - So the complete idea - Either do it by default or at the first run, when asking for the music library folder, have a checkbox for this feature.

Currently the Eclipse packages in Ubuntu lack heavily behind other distributions like lets say Fedora.
The packages in ubuntu are outdated and so are the eclipse language plugins like CDT or Pydev.
Properly supporting this top notch IDE should give new linux developers an easier start.

Make the System default to Metric Units

Most of the planet uses the Metric System. So why does the system default to imperial units? Make A4 the default paper size for printing, only two countries don't use it. Most people don't know what inches are so cm or mm should be the default.

For us tech types, the terms 'mount' and 'unmount' make sense. Not so for average users. "Remove USB Drive" or "Remove USB device" would be easier for non-techies to understand.
From #6549 (merged):
For most of people reading this, "unmount volume" makes perfect sense, but for most "humans" using Ubuntu, Unmount volume isn't a clear action.
My GF had to call me because she didn't know how to remove her pen drive safely. (she said later she suspected it would be that "unmount volume", but she was unsure whether after clicking there, all her data would be deleted).
Other suggestions :
Disconnect drive (3)
Disconnect drive (umount) (2)
Prepare for removal (1)
Remove drive (1)

To set your system sounds, you need to go to "System" -> "Preferences" -> "Sounds" and set all of them manually. How about a universal sound "theme"?

Improve integration with LinuxBios/OpenBios
|

We should investigate ways to use LinuxBios/Openbios enabled hardware to provide a better user experience. Possibly even set up a team to meet with them and discuss.
Some ways it may help is:
- Shave time off bootup
- The ability to support ACPI maybe on hardware not supporting it correctly now
- Being able to support buggy hardware better
- New ways of booting the computer we never were able to do before (ie, boot straight into a media centre instantly)
If we push as ubuntu enabled computers, we could also try to get them to employ LinuxBios/Openbios so that more of the computer is open, and we can do a lot more with the hardware, instead of relying on firmware updates (that sometimes can only be applied in windows).
OpenBios also may benefit some motherboard manufacturers because they no longer need to pay money for the more commonly used bios.
We should try to 'become one with the hardware'. This lets us do this. And it doesn't hurt to take 2 or 3 hours out of some developers time to work on something that may make booting more configureless, the computer more stable, more features, and provide a means of booting quicker.

Won't implement
|
|
Sometimes it's unconfortable when you're searching some files (for example when compiling and installing a program) and when you are "inside" the folder in the file manager, you want to compile. You need the terminal.
So, you need to reach the folder and reach that folder typing all the way to do it, and it's very tedious when the program name is too long.
I suggest that in the menu (File menu) it would appear an item called "Open Terminal in this folder" or simply "Open terminal".
Developer comments
This used to be available by default in GNOME but it was a conscious design decision to remove it by default. There are no plans to implement this by default in Ubuntu.

Quit Griping

I understand that a lot of you may or may not be newbies but a lot of the things that you have listed have either been done already or require very little on your part to enable or install the things that you request. I personally think that we should all just quit griping and just be glad that we can do these things in a short and easy manner. I am in no way an advanced user but the thing that keeps me going is the ability to install or deinstall anything on my buntu. If not for that then I would not be able to do the things in any linux system that I can now do after having to learn first hand. If we take all of this away from the new user, then he will never learn the things he needs to know in order to be a responsible user. This is the reason that the average user on a windows system ends up with an unusable system ridden with viruses and trojans and has to keep reinstalling frequently. I learned the hard way to individualize my system and so should the average new user if for no other reason than to teach them that we can do basically anything with our buntu system and finally live without viruses and have a safe and secure system for our children and other family members. In my opinion you are all just sounding like a bunch of lazy computer users that just want something easy that we can just put in and use right off the bat. If this is the case you can just go back to using your "easy" windows and hope that it continues to run in the near future.

Remove "Add / Remove Programs"; keep Synaptic

Do we actually need both "Add / Remove Programs" and "Synaptic Package Manager"? --Surely not. And, it's confusing, even to me.
If we only have one, which should we keep? --Synaptic, clearly, since it's more featureful.
Can we make Synaptic more user-friendly to novices? --Yes, easily. Give it "novice" and "expert" modes; maybe tart up the graphics a bit.

Optimize this site for eeepc!

I have an eeepc running xubuntu+compiz-fusion. When browsing this great new site I notice that the comments on ideas on my 800x480 (tiny) screen go halfway down the next street (well about 4 inches to the r/h of the screen). I assume this is some kind of rendering problem (eg site not optimized for such a small screen) as it gives me no scrollbar at the bottom of the firefox window. Sort this out please as it does not convey the sense of interoperability that ubuntu prides itself on!
