Support novice programmers to optimise their progs for Ubuntu
Written by spocky the 18 Jun 08 at 10:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think you should put a lot of effort to come up with some documentation supporting novice programmers to use existing frameworks in an optimal way to support Ubuntu.

Questions that could arose in their minds when they want to do a program for Ubuntu:

-> How do I access stock icons from my prog?
-> How do I use Notifications?
-> How to include File dialogs?
-> How do I use the common permission-dialog?
-> How can I use dbus?
-> How do I come from code to actual program used by mass
-> How do I ensuer it can be used not only by gnome or kde or whatever...?
...
...
...

I guess this would lead to more fresh programms but also in a more consistent appearence over all of them. Of course a single point of entry should be used for most spread programming languages

Happy for your reactions...

Hide "Update" menu item in common mozilla apps
Written by spocky the 20 May 08 at 08:04. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On the one hand updating through the repositories is a very convenient way staying up to date.

Therefore, in the common Mozilla apps (Firefox, Thunderbird, soon Songbird?) however the related menu item "Update application" is grayed out.
This is understandable if you understood the update mechanism but for greenhorns this could be confusing.

-> I propose to hide the menu item instead of grey-ing it out...

Happy to hear your reactions.
cheers
Martin

Check what programs/processes Ubuntu users actually use
Written by spocky the 17 Jun 08 at 10:06. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Well, integrate a kind of mechanism (only if user agrees of course) that (lets when shutting down) a summary of CPU times (which prgram/process is using the CPU most time) will be submitted to you. (similar workflow like now in hwtest...)

In this way you know where improvements (performance, features) should go. you know the old rule:
90% of time only 10% of code is used while
10% of time the rest is used.

Benefit from this !

Ubuntu Bug evolution chart
Written by spocky the 17 Apr 08 at 10:23. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There is a wonderful work done for firefox...
Via Google Spreadsheet an bugs evolution chart is produced (and daily update)!

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pMLsRoht2Y1iNG3cmsSw4HQ&gid=7

It is possible to identify the bugs currently blocking the next release. This would need to be amended somehow, but IMHO if we think open I think Ubuntu should also provide the "normal" user with this information. So he can decide on his own to use (or not) Ubuntu !

Would be very helpful for users who are a bit pissed by the bug handling of some other companies (not only MS, also the fruit)

What do you think about it?

[sensors-applet] automatically set min and max temp for CPU
Written by spocky the 12 Aug 08 at 06:31. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This could be done by automatically reading the CPU vendor and typ and via a server retrieve the min and max temp.

Maybe the same could be done for NVidia GPUs ? But here I don't know if the exact type can be retrieved

Get 32bit and 64bit install CD together on one DVD
Written by spocky the 25 Apr 08 at 08:04. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
provide DVD image where both installers are included.

I want to spread the word about Ubuntu .
Not only that, I also want to spread Ubuntu by actively helping my friends with the first steps starting from the installation. As I dont always ask them (or forget) about hteir architecture it would really fits me to have both on one DVD .

In addition: wouldn`t it also be possible to discover the architecture automatically? and then ask if I do want to take the 64bit e.g. or stay with the 32bit?

Show that Ubuntu is not perfect (yet)
Written by spocky the 23 Apr 08 at 15:49. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In order to get the trust of the users (which MS is lacking totally) I think we should clearly highlight was is currently not working perfectly. A link to the related launchpad.net page highlighting the bugs would really help...

[sensors-applet] set up online DB
Written by spocky the 12 Aug 08 at 06:34. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A mechanism should be included where one can select the different Fans installed (like PAPST 8412 N/....whatever) from a dropdown list.

Via retrieving information from a central Hardware DB the sensors-applet should automatically set the min-max range for the RPM

we need industrial partners
Written by spocky the 22 Jul 08 at 14:14. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
there are thousand ideas to contact IBM and similar companies to pre-install Ubuntu.

What about HDD manufactors ?
I buy a HDD (or maybe SSD once its much cheaper). Wouldn't it be nice to start my system at least once with the live cd behavior on my system? then of course a simple click should be enough to format it again...

THIS WOULD ULTIMATIVELY SPREAD THE WORD ...

Framework for tagging everything
Written by spocky the 23 Jun 08 at 14:27. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would love to see a framework provided by Ubuntu and implemented by its software where I can tag different things in different programs (bookmarks, music, contacts, pictures, emails...)

I think a lot of uses can be found for such centralised tagging ...

Brainstorm should be made possible directly from the Ubuntu desktop
Written by spocky the 21 Mar 08 at 11:08. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When users do stuff with their Ubuntu sometimes they think "hey I would make that in another way..."

Sometimes they don't know brainstorm.ubuntu.com
Sometimes they are to lazy to get a login

-> this results in a lost idea for improving ubuntu.

Create a very light ubuntu-brainstorm-applet where a user can communicate their ideas directly from their desktop.
It could gather some infos of the open processes to guess what the idea is refered to.

Add commonly used repositories
Written by spocky the 10 Mar 08 at 20:21. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Even with some packages like ubuntu-restricted-extras there is some functionality only provided by "external" repositories like medibuntu/ google repo.

-> Add the most commonly used repositories in the installation by default.
I think you could add them, but not activate them. Doing so would mean only minimal effort by the users to have also those included...

Include a knowledge base per default
Written by spocky the 17 Jun 08 at 10:26. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Image you are a absolutely newbie to Ubuntu.
You have chosen Ubuntu because you have heared there is the friendliest communnity helping you over the first hard steps. You managed to install it but when you go to the web to seek for help you read only inside-words you do not understand.

I am thinking about a kind of dictionary but not for languages but for expressions. this "dictionary" could be used by different programs (like firefox) to highlight special words.

Do newbies know about userland? No, but they would have the chance to look it up easily without drifting away in the www...

what do you think?

Reorganise appearance applet
Written by spocky the 19 Mar 08 at 11:38. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In the appearance applet there is the button install in the theme tab.
If someone wants to install only an icon pack it can be done exactly from this button.

This might be confusing for users as it could be leading to the understanding that under the theme tab only themes can be install by the button...

Optimised OpenOffice.org packages
Written by spocky the 5 Aug 08 at 11:17. Category: System. Related to: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. New
Please consider to make more and smaller packages for OpenOffice.

This could really benefit:
*) smaller updates
*) packages not only for whole programs (like writer, ...) but for functionalities.

Get heavily involved in the development of GTK+3 to ensure that our ideas can be implemented easily.
Let others benefit from your experience in using the existing 2.x toolkit

Customise Update procedure
Written by spocky the 3 May 08 at 14:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A lot of ideas have been posted highlighting a "silent update" (e.g. #5237 or 5277)

I would love to see that I can divide packages into
-) just updated as soon as available without notification
-) updated but shown a notification "the packages was updated to version xy"

For me I dont care about most of teh pacakges on my pc if they are update (like libraries, ...)
but then there are packages where I would like to see that my attention is specially drawn to.

what do you think?

Define quality assurance procedure for open source projects
Written by spocky the 8 Jul 08 at 07:05. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is based on various open source projects done by different people all over the world.
I think Ubuntu should define a minimum set of quality criterias and procedures(testing units) how source code can be tested against those criterias.
This way should have

> much more guided developers leading to
> bullet proofed pieces of software in Ubuntu and other Distributions
> Canonical/Ubuntu to become a synonym for quality

Whats your opinion about this?

Stay below 100 known issues for all releases
Written by spocky the 28 Apr 08 at 12:05. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On the Ubuntu-related launchpad-website

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy

there are the current numbers of bugs for each release available. I think you should focus your effort of course to the lastest release/ LTS version. But be aware that a number of buigs higher than 100 maybe give a negative image...

Focus on ONE area of improvement per release
Written by spocky the 22 Jul 08 at 14:10. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Why are the Ubuntu developers trying to satisfy everyone?
I think there are some major areas (e.g. printing) where improvement is needed before Ubuntu can get a star.

Taking the example of printing. It is possible. But the GUI is rudimentary and not providing all the tricks other OS have (-> cleaning the ink jets, see the status of your toners, ...)

Once Ubuntu has added some major improvement (once other OS will start to think about to copy features from us not vice versa)we can head to another area !

With Ubuntu we have a very good basic OS already at hand, so we can do most of the common stuff -> now its time to boost the rocket
