Protect Ubuntu-users privacy from curious governments
Written by nandersson the 5 Sep 08 at 11:10. Category: Security. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
In Sweden, as well as in the US, as far as I understood there are now new legislation coming up that seriously compromises the privacy of the users.

In Sweden we have two very worrying laws coming up.

1. The "FRA-law" that gives the Swedish security police the right to wiretapp and datamine ALL international data traveling through Sweden.
2. The "Logging-law". Telco operators will be obliged to collect all information about their users whereabouts and keep that information for a year.

We have to work towards the aim: Security by default - and I'm not talking about the system, but to protect our datastreams from being wiretapped.

Me personally think that PKI is the solution to use here whereever possible. IF a session to/from a Ubuntu-system could be read in clear text the user/administrator should be aware of it.

Postfix is important here, Dovecot as well - all emails should be send over encrypted channels by default.

Mark Shuttleworth with his huge knowledge in Digital Certificates (He sold Thawte remember) would be of great help here.

I would like to see Mark Shuttleworth and Ubuntu leverage an infrastructure and create services to provide their community with a good, PKI-based solution.

Privacy matters

Sincerely
Niklas Andersson, Swedish TechWorld Open Source

Edit 1: I've made a proposition of a real-world-implementation of a very viable way to solve the email issue at a user-level.

A bootable CD or USB to let you install Ubuntu over the Internet selecting the programs you need rather than the default install. What is needed can be installed more quickly.

StreamTo option for Nautilus/VLC
Written by pepepepe24 the 3 Mar 08 at 22:48. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would love to see a "StreamTo" option for media files in the file manager.
By right clicking a media file I would adore see an option that allows me to stream the selected media to a variety of previously determined destinations.
Example: right clicking a media file shows now "open with vlc" should show sub menus like "StreamTo ubuntu1@quality1","StreamTo ubuntu2@quality2"; where ubuntuX and qualityX are machines and qualities predefined in VLC.
I'm talking about a one click streaming capacity.

To my knowledge no other OS or media player would offer such ease in handling..

In VLC I would love to see a "streamto list" alongside the playlist.

Illustration related to ubuntu version
Written by traedre the 10 Mar 08 at 10:13. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I mean, who has never dreamed about seeing what is a "Dapper Drake" or a "Gutsy Gibbon"?

I would love a "Hardy Heron" Logo for my next install!!!

A nice illustration displayed at boot could have a visual impact of which version is installed on the computer... in addition it will provide a more glamorous aspect of the OS.

Allow alt-tab while dragging (and other drag&drop improvements)
Written by bslagter the 10 Mar 08 at 17:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd like to see some improvements in dragging support:
* Allow alt-tab (switch active window) while dragging
* Allow drag an attachment from Thunderbird to nautilus
* Allow drag files from Archive manager to nautilus
* Allow drag a picture from nautilus into Open Office
* Focus/raise a window on drop (mouse-up) instead of drag (mouse-down)
* Make it easier to drop files in a full nautilus window to copy/move (for example: popup drop target in bottom while dragging)

Delete downloaded deb updates after they were installed by default
Written by tenchi39 the 1 Mar 08 at 02:37. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have a seperate root and home partition. The root partition was 5GB big. Once it got full because of all the updates sitting in /var/somewhere...

The system started to act funny and it took a while to realize what's wrong.

Remove orphaned apps via Synaptic

Right now when an application is installed in Synaptic, all the dependencies of the application are automatically installed. However, when the same application is uninstalled, only the application itself is uninstalled by Synaptic; all the dependencies of the application that were automatically installed by Synaptic are left intact.

The only way to remove the automatically installed dependencies is to run sudo apt-get autoremove from the command line.

Synaptic should provide an option to remove the automatically installed dependencies that were installed with an application when that application is being uninstalled using Synaptic.

Having a user drop to the command line to achieve this is not acceptable especially for new users.

Fonts in OpenOffice are horrendously rendered and look thin and 'scratchy' (Times New Roman in Writer being a good example) and additionally there is no sub-pixel anti-aliasing even when the rest of my desktop is using it.

Some horizontal strokes such as on the small letter 'p' are actually invisible - there appears to be not enough weight in them and makes the document look like it has been photocopied too many times.

Currently this is not an application I would like to spend much of my day using (and thankfully I don't have to) - but if Ubuntu is being touted as suitable in an office environment, this could be a serious problem.

I am pushing for Ubuntu to be used in our company but this sort of thing does not help my case.

Quick Flick between OS's with hibernation
Written by Auzy the 6 Mar 08 at 07:16. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We should develop a way to quickly switch between multiple installed linux distro's and windows via exploiting hibernation. This would allow gamers to simply switch into windows quickly (without shutting everything down) when they want to play games, and then back to linux for everything else.

To do so, it should be something like:
1) Start Linux
2) Click quick switch
3) User selects OS to quick switch to
4) Computer goes into hibernation mode, but instead of shutting down, computer reboots and loads selected OS in grub automatically
5) Use alternative OS as normal
6) Alternate OS can quick switch, or just shut down
7) Etc.

There are also kernel patches available to swap kernels for instance without needing to physically reboot (Kexec) which will make the process even faster.

I agree its no priority, but it would act as a great transition technology, as well as allowing users to run multiple Linux distributions without virtualisation, and switch between them quickly.

This feature should not require an IQ of 150 to code.

Ubuntu currently doesn't upgrade the kernel, it just keeps adding newer and newer kernels to the system.

Currently, the list of kernels installed on a Ubuntu system grows over time. This takes up additional disk space and adds clutter to the boot loader.

Ideally, older kernels should be removed automatically.

Maybe leave current and current-1, but not _all_ of them...

This is done for Intrepid, with the package "system-cleaner" installed by default.

It would be great if
#1 there were a tool on my Ubuntu desktop that enable me to collect all hardware information from my machine at once and then submit it to launchpad.
#2 there was a way to reference this hardware profile when reporting bugs.

It would make the lives of bug reporters easier as:
#1 Even unskilled people could collect the info.
#2 The info would only need to be collected once. So bug reporters would not have to repeat the same steps over and over again for each HW bug they report.

It would also make the lives of bug fixers easier as:
#1 Launchpad could enable them to query each bug report for affected hardware.
#2 There would be more such information available because it is not such a pain in the ass of the bug reporters anymore.

The Process in more detail:
-----------------------------------
Step #1: Add a GUI driven software to the Ubuntu distro which enables
users to submit their hardware information to a central database.

Step #2: Allow the users to attach the DB IDs to their launchpad
profile (multiple if needed).

Step #3: Allow the user to select which of his machines are affected.

Step #4: Allow the bug fixers to retrieve a list of affected hardware
for a bug from launchpad. Like: give me all USB chipsets of machine IDs
attached to this bug.

How the feature could be used:

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

One of the serious problems in Ubuntu is that Gnome is a bit sluggish when it comes down to the graphics. Try to install AWN and you know that the icons literally look like shit (compared to OSX).
But the problem does not end there, the whole system should be vector graphics by now when it comes to rendering the windows, menus, icons and so on.

I know this is not a Ubuntu feature, but it should be pressed HARD upon so we also get the great crisp sharp user-interface OSX has. It does not make the system slower, just better. With vector graphics, CompizFusion could take a new leap forward since it is then not hold back by the limitations of bitmap images. Also new graphical applications would be easier to develop, see on the mac side where Quartz engine has helped make a sea out of new graphical applications. We need a Quarz engine for Gnome now!

Include Compiz Fusion Manager by default

Developer comments
Sorry, but no. The stack has to mature. DRI2, drivers and default settings of compiz are the things that need attention. Adding and enabling "power-user"-features by default, which are only used by a fraction of the whole user-base, is an unnecessary introduction of UI-clutter we try to avoid.

Right now, the most likely successful migrations to Ubuntu happen for *nix experts and total novices who have someone install Ubuntu for them, but the most likely people to try Ubuntu are Windows power users--those who like a lot of configuration options but who are also used to using the GUI for tweaking options and not manually editing a text configuration file.

The most popular requests for editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file involve changing the default boot option (to Windows instead of Ubuntu) and changing the timeout before a boot option is selected. The other less popular ones would be just bonus features, I guess.

In many cases, I can't configure my webcam or I have problems with the microphone. Now I can use my webcam but only with V4L2 and only 3 programas detect my webcam. It's a good idea can use my webcam in all programs as camorama.

Developer comments
That's pure driver issue in the first place. A big plus is to recommend UVC-based webcams to users, since it takes a lot of work off the shoulders of driver-developers. On the
integration-side proper support for v4l/v4l2 in webcam-related applications needs to be solidified. The ideal application to polish up is cheese of course.
