Color Coded Update Notifier   forum
Written by drewtown the 28 Feb 08 at 23:29. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
I think it is important for the update notifier to be color coded to stress the importance of security updates. Red updates could signify that there is an important security updates while all other updates could stay the original orange color.

Developer comments
A red exclamation mark is shown instead of the standard orange icon if there are security updates.

Autologin by default
Written by tycoon666 the 28 Feb 08 at 20:31. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When there is only one User on the Computer, the GDM Login makes no sense.

It makes the User think that his Data is secure while in fact it isn't as anybody can get root privileges choosing the recovery mode in grub or using a LiveCD ...

Ability to Pay Ubuntu to licence codecs legaly?
Written by loadbalancer the 28 Feb 08 at 20:50. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Would it not be possible to negotiate a deal for MP3/DVD/MS Fonts etc?
The deal would enable patent/copyright holders to charge users on a per user basis for their proprietary code/designs/patents.

At the moment if I want a licence to record MP3s on Linux I need to pay the patent holder (thomson) an awful lot of money and negotiate a deal myself.
I believe the current bulk rate is

Replace Firefox with Epiphany as the default webbrowser
Ubuntu

Unlike Epiphnay, Firefox is not a real GNOME application, even with the enhanced native look which has been introduced by Firefox 3.0.

Epiphany is a very simple browser, more conforming to the spirit of GNOME, which lacks a lot of the features of Firefox. However, I think most people will probably not need Firefox' extra features and plugins. Those who do need Firefox could easily download it when Epiphany becomes the default webbrowser included out-of-the-box in Ubuntu. Ubuntu should aim for consistency, and Epiphany certainly is a better candidate than Firefox if consistency is the goal.

Epiphany currently uses the Gecko-engine for rendering, but will probably feature WebKit - http://live.gnome.org/Epiphany/WebKit - soon. WebKit would probably do a better job than Gecko.

Because somehow Ubuntu brainstorm says the Blueprint URL I gave isn't valid, I give it here in the text: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/epiphany-default-browser

Decrease number of ttys by default

I think the 6 ttys available by default are an exageration for the common user who doesn´t use it, wasting memory resources.

Better and easier support/installation of touchscreen drivers for Table PCs.

Code could possibly be shared/taken from other projects such as moblin, Ubuntu Mobile etc

LiveUSB
Written by Taku the 28 Feb 08 at 14:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
cdroms are slow, don't allow to modify their content easily, they are weak and not as easy to carry as USB keys.

It would be great to provide Ubuntu as a liveUSB just as Mandriva does. We should be able to carry our distribution on any computer, manage our preferred settings (do I want binary drivers enabled ? what is my preferred resolution ?), etc.

The thing is not to make something transportable, but really a nomad system that could be used just the best way as it could on any computer.

Developer comments
I've changed the title from "LiveUSB instead of LiveCD" to just "LiveUSB". Simplifying the creation of USB versions is a good idea, but it doesn't need to replace CDs just yet.

A tool to turn a USB disk into a bootable Ubuntu live image is planned for Ubuntu 8.10.

Cannot unmount volume: show which application(s)

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

Upstream bug (GNOME #528559) has a patch in discussion. Volunteering to work on it.

Start taking advantage of Upstart

Replace initscripts with upstart events. Our boot sequence is currently slow, full of race conditions and poor interactions, especially with competition between the series of tasks run by sysv-rc, udev and sometimes just with the kernel. We developed upstart so that we could have a truly event driven boot sequence that would be fast, reliable and flexible; we should take advantage of it.

Developer comments
The primary reason that we're not taking full advantage of Upstart yet is that it still requires some development to have sufficient features to actually be better than sysvinit. You can follow Upstart development at its homepage.

Easy way of backuping/moving your documents and settings
Written by stgraber the 28 Feb 08 at 12:10. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At the moment, if someone wants to backup his documents or prepare a migration from a computer to another there isn't much more than file-roller to create a backup.
Ideally, the user should be able to run a graphic software which would ask what the user wants to backup and where (tape/usb key/remote).
Then the same tool would be able to restore the backup.

It would be useful for both backups and migration from a computer to another.

Update : See duplicates ideas which contain even more great ideas about that idea.
