Don't make gnome games dependent on each other
Written by timwylie the 11 Mar 08 at 01:57. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The default gnome games for solitaire, minesweeper, etc are really the best out there, but I hate that if I remove one game through "Add/Remove Programs" it removes all of them! Why?

This will not only confuse, but also really annoy most users. A reason should at least be given. I know there are easy ways around this, but most average users are going to want to use the easy package manager... I mean, that's what it's there for right?

Alt+Tab from fullscreen apps
Cannot alt + tab out of fullscreen games (#63245)

Written by Psycho_zs the 1 Mar 08 at 15:04. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
...and other WM behaviour must be improved:

Some fullscreen apps grab most of keyboard shortcuts under their control. Especially 3D games, Sauerbraten for example. So it is impossible to use Alt+Tab with them.
It is also not good if app uses alt+tab in own purposes, but WM overrides it. Or there is high probability of accidental key press.
There should be some way to minimize such apps. Override control over alt+tab, or/and make another shortcut, that would be accessible from anywhere.

There are also situations when popups brake normal work of fullscreen app. Especially when using compiz.

So summing all:
- WM must have *switchable* ability to override alt+tab so it will work everywhere.
- it must have *customizable* alternative hotkeys that would work like alt+tab everywhere.
- it must have ability to turn off/on (and may be override too) other desktop hotkeys in fullscreen (may be customized for different hotkeys)
- it must not interfere in work of fullscreen app if user does not want it. When in fullscreen, new windows must be created minimized, and notify bubbles must be just drawn over fullscreen. No forced minimization because of popups!
- minimization, or popups must not break the app.
- if fullscreen app's resolution is similar or greater than desktop's, it must be minimized when pressing alt+tab (or custom replacement). If resolution is smaller, it *can* be shown in own window (switchable).
- it must have ability to lock/unlock mouse focus when in some windowed app that needs to grab mouse. Do it by some hotkey, like ctrl+F10 in Dosbox. (this addition based on idea #4642)

Developer comments
It is not the wm's (neither metacity nor compiz) responsibility to offer workarounds for fullscreen-apps that do not cleanly integrate with the desktop environment they're are ported to. I'm only talking about native games. OpenSource games have to be fixed upstream to cleanly integrate with the platform they are intended to run on. ClosedSource/commercial games... well we're out of luck and only can kindly ask the developing company to improve their integration with the GNOME-desktop. As much as I recommend the "it just works"-way, I draw the line at the point where users demand workarounds to be added to games work. With that approach the game-developer will never be forced to fix the bugs in their own code-base.

I think this is mainly communicating with upstream game-developers to (either OpenSource or ClosedSource) improve their integration with the GNOME desktop and help them doing so with advice or code-contribution, than for Ubuntu developers to add workarounds to metacity or compiz to make games work cleanly.

Less screensavers
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 15:24. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!

WHAT THE HELL!

Who need that amount of screensavers?

I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?

Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?

For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.

Play button should change to pause button on Rhythmbox

One thing that always throws me when using Rhythmbox is the way the Play button is a pause button when playing a song but the icon remains a "play" icon. So in order to pause a song you have to press a play icon again. This is really bad interface design.

Every other music app I've ever used has the icon change to denote the new function. When the button plays its a play icon and when it pauses its a pause icon. Why doesn't rhythmbox do this?

Support the Gnash project
Written by howlingmadhowie the 29 Feb 08 at 08:36. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
adobe flash has become ridiculously slow. it's perverse that i can play a dvd in full screen mode and that uses about 5% of my processor, while as a small flash window on youtube stutters. as well as this, there is of course no 64-bit version, or a version for sparc/powerpc under linux.

the solution is obvious--gnash must be developed. could canonical/ubuntu invest some development time in getting gnash working well? that would be great :)

Drag select in Nautilus Please
Written by spacejesus the 12 Mar 08 at 15:38. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Please consider modifying nautilus to enable drag and select multiple files in Nautilus list view. This is an incredibly annoying deficiency which is not present in virtually any other file manager I have used.

Per application control of bandwidth

Written by UBfusion the 3 Mar 08 at 20:48. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In idea #2806 it was proposed to add a download cap to Synaptic.

I think that full control (and measurement) of the bandwidth for each application would be more flexible. You may think I'm crazy wanting to limit my bandwidth when the whole planet wants to increase it, but I think that the feature is much needed in the following cases:

- to control applications without built-in BW control (synaptic, firefox, etc)
- when the ISP imposes volume limits
- in places where one is accounted or monitored for traffic
- when the PC should not be seen uploading or downloading in an uncontrolled way (in schools, universities, work this will immediately trigger alarms)

Personally, on Windows I cannot live without Netlimiter, which apart from BW control has a very nice per-app firewall, displays charts, stats, connections and a lot of other vital info per network adapter.

Perhaps I'm describing a new utility rather than an Ubuntu idea, but since I don't know whether it is supported by the kernel and/or tcp/ip I have to post it as an Ubuntu networking idea.

Make it easier/possible to donate money to Ubuntu
Written by Rabbid the 3 Mar 08 at 17:37. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I can't say that I have seen a way to donate money to Ubuntu's development, but there definitely should bee a way too do so..

My idea is to have a button under "About Ubuntu" where you navigate to a web page were donation is possible.
Many Ubuntu fans who don't have time or skills to contribute in other ways would like this option.

Open a terminal window through Nautilus
Written by Virus the 3 Mar 08 at 16:47. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Sometimes it's unconfortable when you're searching some files (for example when compiling and installing a program) and when you are "inside" the folder in the file manager, you want to compile. You need the terminal.

So, you need to reach the folder and reach that folder typing all the way to do it, and it's very tedious when the program name is too long.

I suggest that in the menu (File menu) it would appear an item called "Open Terminal in this folder" or simply "Open terminal".

Developer comments
This used to be available by default in GNOME but it was a conscious design decision to remove it by default. There are no plans to implement this by default in Ubuntu.

E.g. synaptic could provide a history of what has been installed when along with the possiblity to remove it again.
Fore the people who sometimes evaluate software and afterwards want to remove it again (alon with all installed dependencies)

e.g.

Installed yesterday:
at 5:21pm (_remove_)
Selected
OpenOffice.org
Selected dependencies
Java (1 package depends on Java, _see list_)

Installed two days ago:
at 12:12pm (_remove_)
Selected
GIMP

at 2:59pm (_remove_)
Selected
Gnucash
Selected dependencies
AQbanking (2 packages depends on AQbanking, _see list_)
libchipcard (1 package depends on libchipcard, _see list_)

Create a "works with Ubuntu" logo for hardware   forum
Written by marvo the 3 Mar 08 at 12:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Whenever users plan to buy new hardware for their ubuntu machines, they first have to search the web to find informations about kernel/driver support or incompatibility issues.

It would be really helpful if a sticker on the outside of the box of a scanner/printer/usb-dvb-tuner/mp3(ogg)-player/digicam/... simply said "works with ubuntu" or "designed for GNU/Linux" to guarantee that the product runs "out of the box" with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions.

@ubuntu.com email addresses?
Written by tdrusk the 1 Mar 08 at 13:46. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Do you think it would be cool if Ubuntu allowed us an email with @ubuntu.com? It would be a great form of advertisement, as a @mac.com.

I am not sure about this, so I think it's a great idea to brainstorm.

Developer comments
@ubuntu.com mail addresses are only for Ubuntu members.
http://www.ubuntu.com/community/processes/newmember

That means only people who have be recognized to have done significant participation in the Ubuntu project can get one, it's also a guarantee that receiving an e-mail from a @ubuntu.com is coming from someone with a good understanding of the Ubuntu project.

We don't plan to change that policy in any near future.

Brainstorm: Give every user some "star"s to mark their priorities
Written by ebrahim the 1 Mar 08 at 18:30. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I vote many ideas up, because they are just good. But few ideas are really in my wishlist which I love to see them in Ubuntu ASAP. Let me mark them!
For example each user might have 5 "star"s by which one can mark one's most important (with most priority) ideas.
This will give us an idea of priority of ideas as seen by users.

GUI for ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall)

It would be useful to create a graphical user interface for the new ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall) in Ubuntu. Would be useful to make every new release with an enabled firewall by default and with this graphical firewall utility also.

Expansion of Add Remove Programs - show user-provided descriptions, feature lists, screenshots, comments, ratings, integration with launchpad. Initial page should be top-rated apps, or newest apps. Managed by a webapp?

Or... leave it as it is, but create a website displaying all the great software available for ubuntu including all the features mentioned above with apturl links to install.

From #4613 (merged):

It should be indicated how much I'll have to download to install something.

We have download limits here and well... quite often I exceed them. It would be useful to indicate how big the download is going to be.

Provide an official live 'gaming' repository

Many games feature the ability to play with other people. However, the first thing the game will check for is to see if it is currently up to date. When Ubuntu enters version freeze, the games fall out of date, and it can be harder to play them online without finding a 3rd party update or compiling it yourself (Freeciv, Scorched3D, and Battle for Wesnoth to name a few). This also creates issues when different distributions freeze at different times, so it can be hard to play with other Linux users.

Ubuntu should provide a repository for up to date games for games that will always need the latest version to play online.

Enable Nautilus to use tabs.

Nautilus is Ubuntu's default file management software. There is no reason why you should need to open countless Nautilus windows to manage your files. It is time to bring tabs from your web browser to your file browser.

As far as I understand, when shutting down, Usplash still flickers a moment. In any case, for Xubuntu and Kubuntu (and perhaps other derivatives too), the Usplash still isn't displayed during the full shutdown. If this is possible without being a very hackish solution, it'd be awesome.
