Volume Applet Quick Mute
Written by SelrahCharleS the 5 Aug 08 at 06:40. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
In Gnome the Volume control Applet allows you to raise and lower the volume by hovering the mouse pointer over the applet and scrolling up and down. I find this feature very useful, but I often middle click(mouse3) to mute and then realize that doesn't work. Currently the only way to do that is to right click and then click on the mute checkbox.

I think middle clicking on the applet should mute the speakers. The scrolling for volume adjustment was well thought out, but a quick mute via middle click would make muting much faster and would feel more polished.

Ubuntu Intergrity Scanner
Written by Skyhawk the 4 Aug 08 at 10:41. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As a newbie unix script monkey, when I get a problem I usually google it then follow the intruction from the results that I get to fix my problem. This gets problematic as I don't know what config file I changed most of the time and don't keep record of the change.

As a result my OS probably has random tweaks and changes that I've done but later forgot.

A program that check of all the settings of graphic, drivers and libraries and all the file that are user configurable would be great to make sure I haven't screwed anything up.

More native ogg support
Written by browndog the 31 Jul 08 at 09:01. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If I want to change a system sound, or a mail notification sound in Evolution I have to use a WAV file. While this is no great problem it would be nice if I could also use ogg files as many of the sounds on gnome-look.org are provided in ogg format. In order to use them I have to convert them to WAV with audacity.

Quicker, more efficient updates
Written by bryhoyt the 10 Jul 08 at 20:27. Category: System. Related to: Update manager. New
There should be a more efficient format for apt-get (or the update manager) to download updates. Firstly, it should only need to download the files that have changed in a package (not the whole package), and secondly, it should download a DIFF of those files.

My latest update contains a 34.2 WHOPPING MB update to the linux restricted modules. Here's the changelog:

* Fix broadcom Makefile to get correct objects from split-module.

I'm downloading 34.2Mb just to get a *Makefile update*??? I don't even use any broadcom stuff. Even if I did, I probably wouldn't care enough about a Makefile to make it worthwhile downloading 34.2Mb!

A New Swap Partition to save the lost files (explication)
Written by aliasbody the 4 Aug 08 at 08:30. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
[i]Hi everybody, i think i have an idea to optimise ubuntu, (ps : i speak english very bad) so my idea is to crate a second swap partition or similary (or utilisate the same) to have another fonctione, the save of lost files, exemple, when i write in openoffice, a very importante document for my job, and it takes for exemple 4 pages, if i have a eletric problem in my house at this moment or if my PC shutdown when i'm working, i can, when i restart my pc, see the same screen when he shutdown, and continue (or save) my work.

That's method do a save of the programs "choised ( think it's like that)" do save like every 10 minutes, or every 30 minutes or more, the user can chose. It's just an idea, but he can help a lot of people, like you and me.

Ps: i tried to translate the better i can. If you have not undertand one part of the idea and if you speak french you can look at the same texte in french,...(down of the page)

Thanks a lot in advance.

Aliasbody !

More customization features in Gnome
Written by Carroarmato0 the 4 Aug 08 at 08:27. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
At this current stage, Ubuntu, and more precisely Gnome, lack some basic customizing features like: advanced options for screen savers, being able to change font colours, assign different wallpapers for different virtual screens, use more than one chrome ( colour ) for the panels and other basic settings that are taken for granted in other OS's.

I know that Gnome isn't aiming to become as option intensive as KDE, but these features together with an option in the "Theme" selector to revert back to the original default theme would make life easier for all users a like to tweak their desktops to be more personal.

If a dark theme: one that doesn't suck!
Written by DPic the 4 Aug 08 at 01:54. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.

How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.
We should really work to increase usability: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability

I have looked through all the artwork submissions for Intrepid, and of all of them, this is the one dark theme that i would actually like to use: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Wall-light

I first saw it on this Digg submission: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Intrepid_Ibex_Mockup_Designs

Of course, i'm sure everyone will have input to make it even better. This isn't a final design, but vote for the concept so far!

P.S. Please Digg :) Thanks http://digg.com/linux_unix/Vote_for_a_beautiful_usable_Ubuntu

Make gnome-system-monitor more accessible via CTRL-ALT-DELETE
Written by strattonbrazil the 14 Jul 08 at 22:28. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
gnome-system-monitor provides a cleaner interface than Windows "Task Manager", and provides many useful features including list of processes running, memory and network usage, etc.

This functionality should be more accessible by key binding it by default to CTRL-ALT-DELETE as Windows does--as this is more familiar to users coming from Windows. The current key binding for CTRL-ALT-DELETE brings up the shutdown/logout options, which is already accessible as a desktop button, which is redundant for a relatively less used function.

gnome-system-monitor is an idle interface for monitoring the system and killing processes without using the terminal and provides an interface for doing this that most are already familiar with. Changing it's key binding would make it's functionality much more accessible.

"Administrator mode" for Dolphin/Nautilus
Written by droetker the 20 Jul 08 at 12:00. Category: System. Related to: Dolphin. New
ATM it is very uneasy to edit system files as root with a GUI.
E.g. if you want to edit files in /etc, /boot/ etc... you have to go to the console, get root and edit the files either with nanno or with "sudo gedit" (GNOME) or "sudo kate" (KDE).

It would be a good idea to integrate a "Administrator mode" button or something like this with policykit backend into nautilus/dolphin.

I think for nautilus is something lika that underways, but for dolphin not.
To access root-only directories a question while entering the dir would be ok, but for editing files e.g this is not enough.

Other solution would be - every time I don't have the rights to do something (save /etc/samba/smb.conf e.g.) the systema asks me for the password.

Pause File Transfers.
Written by stevoo the 23 Jul 08 at 19:57. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The new update on Ubuntu 8.04 shows you the multiple files uploaded when you drag and drop different files at different times.
A PAUSE button to pause the individual transfer would be nice.

Better cooperation between GUI and permissions
Written by morbius the 23 Jul 08 at 17:38. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that Ubuntu definitely should have a more seamless integration between the graphic environment and the core system. I don’t know much about these things, but there appears to be some issues between GUI and system permissions.

For instance, if I want to install an application that came with a .sh installation script, I have to start .sh file from a console. Why not implement a way to start it by double click of a mouse, like novice users would expect?
Or another example, when I want to for instance change ownership of a file by using a right-click menu in graphic interface (instead of console and chown) it gives me an error message that I don’t have sufficient privileges for that. So I have to use sudo Nautilus to start Nautilus in root mode to be able to change ownership over files. Wouldn’t it be so much easier and clearer if Ubuntu would simply ask for my root pass and make changes without having to run the whole Nautilus in sudo?

More Professionalism

PREAMBLE
I am aware that everyone, or at least 99% of all people developing linux do so for no payment, in their spare time, so it is reasonable to bear this in mind when making suggestions - which I have.

SUGGESTION
We need to K.I.S.S. This is a marketing term which means "Keep it simple, stupid!" When people design screens they need to be careful with positioning, and keep things uncluttered. They need to make their program "simple and a joy to use". The reason for this is they have spent many hours and days writing their program and it would be sad indeed if nobody used it. So don't just think of the technicalities, think of a new Linux user trying to get your program to work.

DOCUMENTATION
Don't write your own documentation. You can't successfully assume how a beginner will use it. Give your program to A NOVICE, show them how it works to save them time, and then ask them to write notes for a beginner on how it works. Then you can expand the notes for your documentation. Technical people should NEVER write documentation.

SUPPLEMENT
I used to be an editor of a magazine and know that, if you want to get people to read your magazine, you have to make it a joy to read. Plenty of white space, clear and concise.

CAVEAT
This idea is only valid if the programmer wants to see Linux become the accepted standard in the computer world.

Gaming Framework like Webkit will be answer to DirectX
Written by dragoninsane the 24 Jul 08 at 15:42. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Games are not native to Linux, because there isn't any framework that exists in Linux.Linux gamers are casual or hobbyist i feel because they code in there favorite language[c++ etc]/there distro[eg fedora, opensuse].There real need of Linux in particular is to gather all developers interested, concerned, active. This is not a issue with just ubuntu or gnome or kde.every platform kde, gnome, saw fish etc, from every language coderc, objective c,c++,python, perl,qt etc ,from every language/country/distro should contribute.
To make gaming happen there should be a framework for gaming in Linux because a popular framework has solved browser and web based application problems in Linux example
web kit.Web Kit is an open source application framework that provides a foundation upon which to build a web browser.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webkit

A framework is a basic conceptual structure used to solve or address complex issues. This very broad definition has allowed the term to be used as a buzzword, especially in a software context.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Framework
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_development
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_programming

Or SOFTWARE API like DirectX:
Microsoft DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces (API's) for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms.
from a decade directx x travelled from pc to xbox.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX
************************
OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) is a standard specification defining a cross-language cross-platform API for writing applications that produce 2D and 3D computer graphics.

Use free artwork in Ubuntu
Written by Eldmannen the 14 Jul 08 at 20:44. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is a free software operating system.

Unfortunately some of the artwork is not free. :(
The 'human-icon-theme' and 'tangerine-icon-theme' packages are not free.

We should strive to have free artwork to go along with our free software. Artwork that is compatible with the four freedoms. Artwork that can be used in the creation of derivative art, mixing, improving, altering, modifying.

Give the option to watch FLV (flash videos) in VLC
Written by komputes the 6 Jul 08 at 14:38. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Flash plugin (macromedia). New
Currently, Adobe has given us a bloated semi-working flash plugin without releasing the source code for it. The result is a slowdown in firefox and stutters in the video (for higher end computers, perhaps only on fullscreen).

My current setup: I currently have REMOVED the flashplugin-nonfree and I use Video DownloadHelper to download the flv file and then I open it in VLC. This works great for me.

The Benefits:
1)Full screen resolution (No big status bar)
2)No stutter
3)No slowdown in firefox.

So here is what I propose, there are two ways of implementing this idea:

1) Find a way to make VLC a flash player embedded into Firefox (mozilla-plugin-vlc)

2) Open Youtube website -> Automatically starts downloading to ~/Videos -> Opens in VLC.
User has a choice of how long the videos should be kept.

What does everyone think?

choose the new theme of Ubuntu by Brainstorm.
Written by nq6 the 2 Jul 08 at 16:35. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
View the idea:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3102/2630811421_1ccd353665_o.jpg

The Ubutnu is a popular distribution, and the choice of their standard theme should be made by all by voting. And not by a small group. The community can elect the theme through the Ubuntu Brainstorm.

For the choice of a new theme that is the satisfaction of the majority that idea is essential.

---------------------
Edited:
Initially thank you all. This idea may help it to developers in the choice, and can have an extra theme.

Can serve as a basis for changes in the theme chosen by the team of Ubuntu, even if the popular themes are not adopted.

This idea will help.
