We need to change the default screensaver. The problem with the current screensaver is that the first time you meet it is when the screen suddenly turns black during the installation. That is very confusing for most users, as the first thought always is that the installation has crashed.

I suggest a screensaver that helps brand Ubuntu, like for example the "Floating Ubuntu" screensaver. It could also be a textbased screensaver that could run on older machines witch doesn't support 3D.

Fix GIMP's canvas/layer/image management
Written by laryllian the 6 Jul 08 at 22:38. Category: Accessibility. Related to: GIMP Image Editor. New
I hate GIMP's layer/canvas management, why do we have commands like "fit canvas to layer" or "layer to image size"? If one pastes a new picture into an existing one or create a new layer out of a selection no one needs to deal with those things. Anyone doing serious image manipulation knows what i am talking about... Thx

ONE Window Gimp
Written by maknu the 26 Mar 08 at 21:17. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gimp is a great graphics editor we all know. Congratulations to all developpers!

My Idea:
- Adding a Selection for "Using Gimp in one Window"

IMPORTANT
- That should NOT be default, but an option, which doesn't go in trouble for users liking this multi window management with its advantages!

I guess that more than 20% of the gimp users where really happy for this important feature. I know that Gimpshop and other Plugins are available, but this couldn't be the end solution. Gimp should bring this "little" feature with it in future! Thanks!

Redesign Ubuntu Website (Ubuntu.com)
Written by LostOverThere the 22 Mar 08 at 03:18. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The current Ubuntu website is messy, unlike Ubuntu. I move the website be redesigned to be simple, and more usable for beginning users.

Remember, the first thing a user see's when he wants to download Ubuntu is Ubuntu.com

It needs to be more intuitive!

Mandrivas site (although Ugly) is designed with simplicity in mind: http://mandriva.com/

codec list in firefox
Written by Xan the 20 Mar 08 at 12:48. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For example if we go to youtube, firefox asks us if we want to install adobe flash or gnash. After this election, we could not delete and select the other options.

The installed codecs don't appear in Tools menu.

Huge package management improvements
Written by fhucho the 18 Mar 08 at 20:37. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have been thinking about how to improve package management in Ubuntu (and other distros) last months. I have developed in my mind quite clear conception of how the package management should ideally look like. I will summarize some of my ideas briefly in several points, I won't go into much detail. You will probably find some of them very hard to realize/implement (e.g. the first one), but I have also ideas how to do that, so don't bother to ask me in the comments. I will maybe start to work on these ideas in the future, so your opinions are welcomed!

Here is the summary of the ideas:

1) Create universal package management system and convince other distributions to switch to it - present system, when people have to create several different packages of one program is really ineffective, a lot of the contributors' time could be spent better. This is also the cause why many applications have to be installed in the unuserfriendly configure/make/make install way (impossible to install for normal users).

2) Possibility to install packages directly from web pages via one click

3) Possibility to install packages for not-privileged users

4) Possibility to compile packages from source code

5) Possibility to have several version of a package installed (e.g. Firefox 2 and Fx 3 beta)

6) When downloading updates, download only diffs of necessary files

7) Possibility to download special version of a package (containing dependencies which are not normally installed on standard system), which can be later installed on another PC which is not connected to net

8) Faster package installation

Vlc as default for video instead of totem
Written by zannabianca the 15 Mar 08 at 19:08. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Totem is a good player, but vlc is much better. Please put the best software as default in ubuntu, because the problems of new users , coming from windows, will decrease a lot with vlc, that recognise more codecs than totem.

Apache GUI

Since there are many applications having installation and access through a web server, there should be a good interface for Apache.

Brainstorm : Students Ideas
Written by useful_idiot the 12 Mar 08 at 03:14. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Brainstorm is to suggest ideas but I believe that most people who vote here are end users and they are not long time Ubuntu users. So ideas representing *good good* things which end user can understand get many votes. Like "Bluetooth support should be added.". But sometimes students who are willing to add their share by working on small projects try to give some technical details but as soon as an idea goes technical, many people don't understand it, hence no votes. This gives them a bad impression. So a separate space should be provided for these kind of ideas, which will be reviewed by some experienced users only.

Create WikiCode to Improve Bazaar Collaboration
Written by EduardoWillians the 12 Mar 08 at 03:07. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It may work with launchpad. This is a way of building software trough Bazaar mode.

The goals and project description come from Canonical. The code part to be improved (or create) is made avaible for public and authorized programmers (authorized by moderators) are allowed for coding online.

Get Apple make an iTunes port.
Written by arielcima the 12 Mar 08 at 02:57. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Yes, i know about songbird, i know about amarok, i know about gtk-pod, i know many people don't want DRM in Ubuntu. But if you have a perfectly working iTunes in Ubuntu you will draw more users. Put it in the partner repos, just like Parallels. You can always display a warning about DRM and propietary software when you choose to install it.

Commercial Version of Ubuntu
Written by spacejesus the 12 Mar 08 at 15:19. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
How about offering a commercial pay-for version of Ubuntu in addition to the regular versions? This could be a download option and a shippit offering. It could include the following:
1. Licensed codecs from fluendo or others.
2. An Ubuntu flavour of Crossover-Office / Cedega
3. Introductory support from Canonical

I think this would serve at least 3 purposes. Firstly it would be useful for people to feel comfortable using proprietary codecs in certain countries where this is a problem. Secondly, some people would be more likely to adopt linux/ubuntu if they have to pay for it.Psychologically the idea that something is better because it costs more is a very real phenomenon. Thirdly, I see this as a good way for Ubuntu/Canonical to generate funds and (gasp!)profits. I believe this is important for Ubuntu's medium-term success and is very important in tackling Bug #1. The introductory support offer would be a good way of establishing long-term support relationships with clients.By the way are any of my above ideas in violation of the GPL, I'm not sure...

Get rid of Totem, Use SMPLayer
Written by spacejesus the 12 Mar 08 at 15:35. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
I think totem is a very awkward media player with a lot of interface limitations verging on unusability. SMplayer is a far superior application. If there was some way to build a GTK version of SMplayer I think this would be a far better choice for Ubuntu

FOSS Master List
Written by spacejesus the 12 Mar 08 at 16:52. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is not strictly Ubuntu relevant but I would like to see a website which catalogues every piece of FOSS available for different purposes. E.g. media players 78, calculators 122, professional quality video editors 0. This way developers could see where work is needed and where it isn't.

Add skype, SAPGui and other commercial software to the repos
Written by tienm the 11 Mar 08 at 11:32. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

Adding more commercial pkgs, if you like it or not, will improve the impression that Ubuntu is a professional and serious product.

Commercial software is not a bad thing and will always be there. Let's close the gap.

1. Enable the 'partner channel' by default, so that commercial pkgs can be found in Synaptic.

2. Add more software, like SAPGui, Skype, Lotus Notes client, F-Secure (+VPN), Cisco VPN client,

3. Create a seperate section for these kinds of software.

Even would it be great to provide a way of selling commercial linux software via Synaptic.

Bookmarks in Gnome Terminal
Written by oleksiy the 4 Mar 08 at 09:41. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be perfect to have bookmarks in gnome terminal application. People may have lots of places on filesystem they usually work with or sites they manage using SSH and it will be very cool to bookmark them and then just select from menu to enter. (Like in KDE console app)

Written by tomaszx the 8 Mar 08 at 00:47. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great if possible to check when, who and how long use my computer... like a history my computer

|user | date | time |
tomek | 20080213 | 1h |
jasiu | 20080323 | 2,3h |
john | 20080421 | 9h |

I think about nice GUI to this.

Thunderbird as default email client
Written by cmayoros the 29 Feb 08 at 02:34. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
While both Evolution and Thunderbird are great applications, Thunderbird should become the default email client available on Ubuntu.

Developer comments
There are currently no plans to move away from Evolution at this time.
