Contribution to linux
Written by Akash Singhal the 26 Jun 08 at 08:40. Category: Office. Related to: Live CD. New
I would like to suggest that we should try to make contributions made to the linux development program to make them eligible for deduction under income tax payment.
I think this would encourage others to contribute for linux.

Group artists and albums under "Other" when there is only one track in Rhythmbox
Written by deadowl the 13 Jun 08 at 00:49. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The title isn't the exact idea, but it's the basis of the idea.

The most annoying thing when browsing through artists and albums when using ANY music player is that the list is polluted with artists and albums from which one has very few tracks. It makes browsing for an artist or album increasingly pointless as one's music collection grows, and so people just end up using the search function exclusively. I believe that there is still hope for browsing however.

This is what the beginning of my Artist list looks like in Rhythmbox:

All 280 Artists (1884)
Artist 1 (11)
Artist 2 (1)
Artist 3 (1)
Artist 4 (1)
Artist 5 (23)
Artist 6 (1)
Artist 7 (1)
Artist 8 (1)
Artist 9 (3)
(...)

Up to G in my list of Artists, I can count over 50 artists from which I only have one track. Most of these are from compilation discs, online music stores, or are free promotional singles. It makes browsing by artist a nightmare.

The same is true for albums, though not quite as horrible.

I feel it would make sense to group artists 2-4 and 6-8 in "Other" artists at the very end of the list of artists in Rhythmbox.

Integrate ndiswrapper+ndisgui into Networkmanager by default
Written by etniesbmx the 25 May 08 at 18:21. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
By integrating ndiswrapper + an ndigwrapper gui into the network manager, setting up wifi drivers will be a whole lot easier. The user would not need to know what ndiswrapper is or where to find it or how to install it -- all they'd need is their wifi card .inf file.

Implement a smart nautilus script to easily convert video in various formats
Written by jacen-me the 18 Mar 08 at 18:58. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think all is in the title. A smart script that detects current file type of selected video file(s), that propose a list of possible output formats, and that build new file in the same directory would be a great and user-friendly implementation of FFmpeg in nautilus.

Possible menu :

Convert to > mpeg
avi
wmv
-------------
3gp
mp4
etc...

Enable file rename when clicked upon its name
Written by george9233 the 2 Jun 08 at 01:18. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
The only way to rename a file in Nautilus is to right click a file and then choose "Rename...". It will be much much more convenient if we have the ability to rename a file when clicked upon its name.

Developer comments
This is a feature of Nautilus so you don't accidentally rename a file, not a bug. :)

Navigation in Nautilus for beginners
Written by SoRcErEr972 the 20 May 08 at 09:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Actually, for beginners, it can be a little confusing to navigate through filesystem (/var, /bin, ...)
Also, when clicking on a labelled partition, he could not clearly understand to get an url from root (/media/sba1 as an example)

I suggest to add a "beginner" mode by default (the current mode sould be easily avalaible) that "hide" the filesystem from / and that only shows mounted partitions and connected devices. Partitions in this mode should keep their label in the url (and so avoid /media/hda as an example)

Offer a Children's Version of Ubuntu
Written by anno7490 the 16 May 08 at 15:05. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi All,

My suggestion is that we develop a simple version of ubuntu for easy use by Kids. Nothing complicated just easy graphics and cool and simple applications. Something a 5year old would use.

Many Thanks

Add download count to the packages in add/remove applications
Written by sboden the 20 May 08 at 11:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add a general download count to the packages in add/remove applications: how many people ever installed this application/package.

What would be nice is to have an indication of popularity of packages. It could serve a couple of purposes:
- indication to developers how many people on ubuntu use their software, not include it anymore if no-one is using it e.g.
- indication to users if software is used a lot... suppose you have 10 instant messagging applications in the repository where 2 or 3 are used by a lot of people and the rest is not. If I would install an IM I would then first also try the ones used a lot (which I hope would result in a better user experience).

Reset counters per ubuntu version. So in hindsight if the data remains available someone could even do popularity graphs over versions.

In Nautilus: "preview" mp3/ogg files when mouse hovers over them
Written by Girindor the 20 May 08 at 13:03. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Linux Mint, when the mouse hovers over a sound file in Nautilus for more than 3 or 4 seconds, it starts playing the file without opening any other program, like a media player!

As soon as the mouse leaves the file, it stops.

This is an amazingly convenient feature which I would love to see in Ubuntu!

File Copying
Written by ravindranathakila the 6 May 08 at 04:54. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
File copying has been here for a long time. There are some defaults needed still. One is, when I'm going to overwrite a folder, the copier should ask if to overwrite the folder or add only the missing contents within it(including subfolders). This is needed when one has broken a file copy operation halfway. The copy will ask if to override a folder which we know, got copied halfway. So we should be able to specify if to overwrite the already existing ones or just to add the remaining.

Give up that brown colour palette and try a new one chosen by the community
Written by retj the 24 Apr 08 at 21:21. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As i've heard about ubuntu is that is the ugliest ditro, and y think it's because of the colours.. They're so not easy to the eye, its too dark, I tried Hardy Beta and its awesome artwork there, but.... the colours.. so, Why not us, the Ubuntu community change them?

Add option to Add/Remove... to filter out GNOME or KDE specific applications
Written by Yaywalter the 25 Apr 08 at 04:18. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great if there were a way in the included Add/Remove... program to filter out either GNOME-specific or KDE-specific apps. It's really annoying to stumble upon an application that sounds really cool and/or useful, but then look and see it's for the desktop you don't use.

I use GNOME, and I don't want to see any of the KDE apps.

Extra characters in entered password do not invalidate login
Written by nilium the 14 Apr 08 at 06:02. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ever had to log into ubuntu while somebody is watching you type your password? It would be great to be able to type extra characters before and/or after the correct password string and still work. For instance, say the password is "orange" then typing "ABCorangeDEFH" or "uorange232j" would work just as well as typing simply "orange."

Promote casual gaming
Written by tenchi39 the 27 Mar 08 at 07:15. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We all know that the Wii is a big hit. We can make linux just as successfull with these mini ideas:

- Make a program (Ubuntu Game Browser) that is like adept or synaptic but only shows games (and emulators) that can be installed/removed with proper description and screenshots. This program would be automatically installed in Programs/Games

- Help financially projects like stepmania, frets on fire, sim-city like games etc. Games that are popular and would be successful on other platforms too, or mimic other successful games exclusively in linux. Make these available in the repositories and be sure to always have the latest version.

- Make a subpage on ubuntu.com for games. Also, games should be able to send "achievment points" or high scores to this page to show the top100 gamers for each popular game. There could also be an online matchmaker here

- Make easy to use interface in gnome and kde to configure gamepads, joysticks, dancepads, wheels etc. Be sure to support out of the box the wii controller, xbox360 controller etc...

Make the computer give me answers
Written by Eldmannen the 26 Mar 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make a new application or improve Beagle, Tracker or Deskbar.

It do acronym lookups, math calculation, fact lookup, data generation, unit conversion, etc.

So that when I ask it something, it answers me.
RAM? = Random access memory
91*74-26 = 6708
Capital of Sweden? = Stockholm
22 inch in centimeter = 55.88 centimeter
chemical formula for water? = H2O
#0000ff = shows the color blue
01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 = hello
68 65 6C 6C 6F = hello
Hello in Italian? = ciao
Time in Tokyo? = 19:46
Weather in Paris? = 7°C, sunny.
rot13 hello = uryyb

So right from the Deskbar (or something) on the desktop, I can ask something, and it will answer me.

Hardware Prompt
Written by yoman82 the 26 Mar 08 at 19:17. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you insert a USB device/Cd/DVD/ etc. Ubuntu should be like Windows, and ask you what you wish to do with it. For a camera "Copy pictures, View files, do nothing" In a nice little pop-up menu.
