Wine-doors is a great program to works alongside with Wine, with scripts to help in the installation of windows programs, I think it would be very usefull if it were included in the repositories...

Add a GUI to PulseAudio

A default GUI for PulseAudio would be great, the ability to control the volume for each program is a very useful thing...
[edit] For those who want it, just install padevchooser (PulseAudio Device Chooser) through synaptic, it also install all the other packages needed...

PulseAudio: Ability to mute everything except "allowed programs"

I would like to mute all programs, except the ones I allow to have sound, for example:
Mute everything except the media player, why? because websites sometimes have some crazy ads that scare the hell out of us, how annoying!
Disabling every potential "annoyer" is hard:
-Sounds can come from many browsers
-each browser can have many plugins
-even non-browser programs can have annoying sounds
-and even if we do disable all that, once the program is closed those settings disappear! (see idea 6752)
Would be sooo nice to be able to do this, it would give us so much peace of mind, knowing no program will produce sound, except our media player with our favorite tunes (for example)....

Hard drives can easily get too hot, especially on laptops, it would be nice to at least warn the user if the temperature of the HDD raises to dangerous levels... (maybe even hibernate/shutdown if it reaches "melting" levels, but that is another question...)
Sure this can probably be done now, but it is not the default behaviour, and I think nobody likes a "fried" HDD....

I don´t think this is possible rigth now, would be great to display the size of the folders in the tab "size in Nautilus", currently it is just for files...
Maybe cache the results, and only compute the size of a folder if there are changes, so it won´t have to do it everytime ubuntu restarts...
I don´t say to make it default, no, that would probably slow things too much, just add that option, so we can turn it on...

Break Ubuntu free from the laws of the USA

Probably this is going to be controversial but...
The majority of people that are into open source/free software probably don't like very much some of the laws the USA got, DMCA, software patents, lots of power to DRM and not so much power to the users... Microsoft threatening Linux with lawsuits! a "Sue them all!!!" policy that threatens everyone...
Lots of countries in the world have more freedom in the aspect of the "digital things"... and it kinda sucks that every ubuntu user in the world gets a system that (in it's default configuration, of course) can't even play a .mp3 file! not because of technical limitations, but because of laws made by the powerfull people of one or few countries, lobbied by the rich guys and companys...
Why not just relocate ubuntu main servers to a more free country? I don't know were they are now, but Sweden, for example, looks good for this kind of things... so a more “complete package” of ubuntu could be offered (I'm talking about software like libdvdcss, etc... software that is free software but is not included only because the fear of lawsuits) I'm not saying: “Lets be the Pirates of Sealand and live in anarchy!”, but most of us agree that the current laws in USA are a bit...... well... I leave it to you to think about it...
[EDIT] This is not about including proprietary software, it is about including FREE software, but that in the current situation is ILLEGAL (link to PDF with DRM) to use in the USA (or at least "risky" or "in a grey area" of legislation).
(This is not getting into stuff like "My country is better than yours!"... they All have good things and bad things... it is just my humble opinion...)
Peace.

PulseAudio: Remember settings for programs

If some crazy flash ads in Firefox start playing sound I mute those crazy bastards in PulseAudio, (I do not mute all the sound, so I can still listen to music). But once firefox is closed, those settings disappear!!! meaning: once I re-open firefox, flash has sound again!!!
I hate when those bastards just scare the hell out of me when I'm listening to music or something.... so I would like to have flash ALWAYS muted, something PulseAudio does not allow!
Why can't PulseAudio just remember these settings for each program?!?! Seems easy to implement...
It would be sooo nice...
PS: This is only possible in PulseAudio with the GUI installed: padevchooser

I it was a great thing to include some partitioning software in the default ubuntu install, Gparted is on the LiveCD, but not after, in the installed system...
I think it is a very useful thing to have something like that by default... Formating pen drives, external HDDs...

Cinepaint is a great program, it was even used in some popular "hollywood" movies! But it is not available in ubuntu at the moment... would be nice if it were added to the repositories...
[edit] I even tried to compile it... but I'm no expert, and even folowing the instructions to compile software it gave me a bunch of errors and didin't worked out...

It would allow to see how many voters are out there, and provide a better context for the number of votes of any idea... The only thing we know for sure is that is has 4806 users, or more... because that is the total number of votes on the most popular idea... (to date)
This would be nice...
[edit] Seems to be on the way...

With an interface similar to daemon tools or WinMount...
I think this is already possible, but not in a very easy way... for example:
One day I downloaded one tar.gz with installation files of one program, and that file had more than a thousand files inside! it would be much easier to just:
-mount
-install program
-unmount
Instead of:
-extract to disk (using more space on disk and causing unnecessary wear and tear on a hard drive)
-wait lots of time
-install
-tell ubuntu to delete files
-still wait some time
Even if not by default, at least having some program in the repositories would be very nice.

Azureus ( http://azureus.sourceforge.net) in ubuntu repositories is still in version 2.5.0.4 while there is already version 3.0.5.0 available for linux!
I think it would be nice to include the latest version in the repos, or both, if they still want to offer the older version, with the classic interface...
[edit] To anyone interested on how to make the prety link:
It is used with html code, I can't post it here because it would not be displayed (would be interpreted, as expected) you can see about it here.

Wubi is nice, but would be even nicer if it would allow to install ubuntu directly onto a partition, like UNetbootin, that even allows to install ubuntu to a USB pendrive in a easy way...
It would be a very nice to have this feature in wubi or an official program...

Wubi is a GREAT program, but one of it's "problems" is that a user on windows, cannot acess the contents of the "virtual disk" of ubuntu, so the easiest option is to always save the things to the windows partition... making it more difficult to "break free" for good...
A simple program, to mount the "root.disk" file would be very nice...

Ability to keep original aspect ratio on MPlayer

MPlayer is probably one of the best media players on Linux... but it does not keep the original aspect ratio of videos!
Sure we can select "Aspect ratio -> Original", but as soon as we resize the window, the video is distorted!
I mean, why can't we at least have an option to always keep the original aspect ratio of the videos?!?
All other players I tried in ubuntu even do it by default:
-GNOME MPlayer
-Kaffeine
-KMPlayer
-KPlayer
-Totem
-SMPlayer
-VLC
...
