Start An Official Ubuntu Online Driver Resource

Have an online resource such as 'drivers.ubuntu.com' where users can submit, vote or comment on drivers that they've used to make their hardware work properly. This would negate having to search through multiple forums to find help on getting a particular compenent to work. You can search for drivers by manufacturer, device type etc, then download and install by following install directions or tips from previous users.
Check http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/drivers/ or driverguide.com or windrivers.com for ideas or examples of how this would work.

I suggest that the repositories are updated to include HPLIP 2.8.5, since only 2.8.2 is available. The more up to date drivers support more devices and work better than the old ones, and this would help people installing ubuntu with an HP printer that isn't supported on 2.8.2.

Disconnect wifi through Network Manager

Right now Network Manager doesn't give you an option to disconnect from a Wireless Network.
Your options are to connect to a different wireless network or drop to the console to disconnect.
It would be faster and easier to be able to disconnect using the same application you used to connect.
When you click on Network Manager a menu shows up with a list of wireless networks and the following options:
"Connect to other wireless networks..."
"Create new wireless network..."
"Manual configuration..."
My idea is to put the option "Disconnect from Wireless Network" on that menu.
Clicking this option would also add the network to a blacklist so that it won't automatically reconnect unless you connect manually to it.
UPDATE:
This idea has been actually implemented.
On the newer releases of Network manager, you can remove a wireless network by right clicking on the network manager icon on the notification area, and then clicking on "Edit wireless networks...".
A window will pop up where you can remove the networks you don't want to connect to.

A more complete services manager

The current services applet, while sufficient for disabling and enabling services (in the current run-level?) could be made more complete by adding functionality similar to that in Fedora/Red Hat.
Features could include such as which run-level the administrator is modifying services for, and starting, stopping and restarting services from the applet.

As we probably all agree, Brainstorm is great. It is a direct connection between users and developers to show what the majority of users thinks about the need of features in Ubuntu.
However, Brainstorm is only intended for broader, abstract feature requests and not for little details or bugs.
My suggestion is to add a feature to Launchpad that allows everybody with an account to click on a link or button on a bug report that reads "I am affected by this bug".
Then there could be some "Hall of shame" showing which bugs annoy the most people (maybe multiplied by the severity of the bug).
The rationale behind this is that I believe that users and developers often have different relations to bugs, for example technically more advanced people will adapt to certain bugs or do a quick workaround and forget about it while the average user won't know what to do about it.
A bug "hall of shame" would provide a quick overview which bugs affect the most people and should be fixed to ensure the happiness of the most Ubuntu users.
Developer comments
In Launchpad one can now click "This bug doesn't affect me" in a bug report to indicate that they are affected by a particular bug.

When a new wireless network is activated, the only way to see it in network manager is waiting 'till the system find it... Why not adding a simple (refresh) button to make a new search and find all Wireless Networks?

install 7zip with default

7-Zip is open source software. Source code is under the GNU LGPL license. it is nice to install it default.
1. Install 7zip with other copression methodes like zip, tar, gzip
2. It automatically integrated with file-roller. So no need any other gui program or user don't want to know complex comand lines for compressing their data in 7zip.

Improving File Roller

(a)
When the user right clicks on an archive file like zip,rar,7z,etc, the options provided are :
1) Open with archive manager
2) Extract here
It would be nice to have the following menu option:
extract to
(b)
When opening an archive, file roller seems to read the entire archive in one go(or file roller is very slow in reading list of files in an archive). So, if the archive is really big, the user doesn't get to see the list of files & dir in it unless the entire archive hierarchy is fetched. I think WinRAR shows the list of stuff at the top level in the archive & reads the remaining archive hierarchy in background & the list shown in the UI is updated incrementally .
(c)
The File roller UI for creating archives by right clicking on folders is too simple and needs some more options like:
1) Delete files after archiving
2) options for selecting compression level
3) options for splitting archive across multiple files
4) password protection
Again Win RAR has a good UI for this
(d) There could be a context menu option for adding selected file(s)/folders(s) to an existing archive. Something like 'Add to archive'

We currently have full support for ACPI 1.0 and some support for ACPI 2.0.
We should get full support for ACPI 2.0 and also try to get full support for ACPI 3.0b.
ACPI ( Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is an open industry standard that defines common interfaces for hardware recognition, motherboard and device configuration and power management.

Notify user when a filesystem has errors

Since Hardy was released, I've been amazed at the amount of posts from users trying to change permissions on external drives in order to obtain write access. People try to help by offering solutions that involve chmod and chown, but in every case, the user has not been able to write to the volume because it has been mounted read-only due to filesystem errors. This is easy to fix - but not obvious to the user.
FAT volumes are particularly problematic, especially if they are not cleanly unmounted.
I have just triaged a bug on Launchpad with exactly this issue, and it is just something that seems to crop up again-and-again-and-again-and-again etc.
We should have a notification pop-up which gives information to the user when they insert a volume that has errors. The notification pop-up should tell them that the volume is read only, and should offer advice for the user to fix it.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Something like Apple did with Nokia in order to provide compatibility of Nokia phones in it's iSync software.
Me and new users simply DON'T CARE if the protocol is open or not,all we care is to get our phones working.
Yes,I know all the open-source libre-software yada yada, but I also know what I want.I want a phone that really works.I do not care about ideologies or other things.
Do not get me wrong,I love ubuntu, and I hate M$ and Windows, but this is silly. Many companies are shy about porting their apps to Linux only because of this "open-ideology" thingie.Accept proprietary sw,when you can't get something better.Anyway,it's better than nothing.
