DVD support is still not so easy to get, due to
content scrambling. Scripts like automatix provide
this relatively easily, but it could not hurt to have
a straightforward path to get DVD playback support.
Stick in a DVD, and it plays. DVD players could also become
simpler. I use xine or mplayer but it would be nice to have
the simplicity of the DVD player in OS X.

Attract New Developers to Ubuntu and Open Source

Ubuntu is built on the philosophy that every user should be part of the community. Many users help out in various ways, however very few start programming because of the traditional difficulties.
1) Many people just don't know where to begin. Create a developer resource website and a "Beginner Developer Package" as mentioned in idea #4354.
The website should mostly contain articles aimed at new developers. It can link to external resources (e.g. the KDE and GNOME developer websites) for more advanced information.
Both the website and the developer package should be maintained by the general Linux community. Although the project will not be distro specific, The Ubuntu community will benefit greatly by sponsoring the project.
2) Bring back Canonical Code Bounties to motivate new developers.
Integrate them with community bounties as mentioned in idea 1295.
3) Create a Ubuntu Design Rewards website. (Idea 2961.)
Most developers coding for OS X and Windows have never even heard of Ubuntu. Mac OS X in particular has a costant stream of neat new apps. We need to capture their attention and bring them to Linux by way of contests and prizes.
In particular, Canonical should focus on attracting high school and university students. Google has been sucessful in bringing students to open source by using prizes and monetary incentives (GSoC and GHOP). We need to be more welcoming and do the same.

The title is an example of idea i think Brainstorm have to hide : Some ideas are too logical.
Examples :
- Add software 2.0 and not software 1.9
- Support acpi
- Speed Up boot time
- Better wi-fi support
- ...
In fact, these ideas are good ideas and everyone will vote for. But little ideas but good ideas are hidden because can't obtain same scores.
We can vote "for" or "against" an idea. We could clic on a "too logical" button and if "too logical" have a important score we hide this ideas. A visitor could watch all ideas, but by defaut done and "too logical" should be hides.

Update Manager should update Firefox, OpenOffice, and other major software

Won't implement

One of Ubuntu's best features is the Update Manager. It updates essential software automatically, greatly alleviating a common user frustration. Just imagine how great it would be if the Updagte Manager also updated programs like Thunderbird, the GIMP, and OpenOffice. Windows and Mac would simply not be able to compete with such a feature due to their software restrictions ($$$).
In order for this to happen, Canonical's software repositories must be updated more often.
Outdated repositories also make it extremely difficult for users to upgrade their software manually. The creators of programs like Firefox and Songbird usually do not provide .deb files for new versions of their software. Thus, users must wait for major repository updates (once every 6 months) before they can upgrade their software.
Please update major software (Firefox, Thunderbird, Songbird, OpenOffice, the GIMP, etc) in the repositories more often. As I said, it would give Ubuntu a huge edge over Windows and Mac and greatly improve the usability of the Operating System overall.

apt-get update should verify checksum before download

Every time you run 'apt-get update' it fetches a repository file that is several megabytes large.
Often in vain.
It should fetch an checksum of the remote package list and then compare it against the local cached list to see if the checksums match. If they match, then there are no need fetch it in vain.

Very very easy way to share files over the internet: Tubes

Imagine a folder on your desktop, when you drop a file in it, the file is transmitted to your friend anywhere on the internet. Transfer is asynchronous so if the person is away, then it's postponed until the next time they are online.
The folders are called "Tubes"
Tubes can also be more sophisticated to allow multiple people to be on the receiving end.
The idea is already implemented on Windows
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubes_%28software%29
I like the name Tubes and hope it is not trademarked. Actually, I thought of the idea and name before them from pneumatic tubes which I think are a brilliant invention!

Scan Ubuntu's current system logs for errors and have a popup showing possible solutions for the errors.
I can see something like this really helping out with issues that people don't even know they have. for example, maybe DMA is not registering correctly with a users cdrom during boot. Since the issue is somewhat benign the user will never know that DMA is broken, they'll just think that Ubuntu is not good at buring cds and playing music cds.
With some type of system log scanning Ubuntu can notify the user of DMA issue and refer them to a possible solution.

Sometimes I'll be listening to some music, adjusted to the perfect sound level. Then, i might decide to play a flash game without volume control, or an ad on a page opens, and the sound on it is OVERLY loud.
Same thing for pidgin message notifications. They ring loud over my music, and my only escape is to change the sound properties in the preferences.
Could someone design a quick volume-control option on a per-window basis?
