Change default hotkeys to use Win (super)
Written by satana the 11 Jul 08 at 12:18. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In today all keyboards has "win"-key. I propose to use this key by default for all WM/DE hotkey combinations (win+d, win+r, etc...)
This will uniform and preclude all conflicts with other desktop software.

bug
Written by gmatht the 30 Apr 08 at 13:28. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If a user is added to a group, they do not have access to the rights of that group until they login again. This is typically achieved by asking the user to logout. See e.g.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-share/+bug/212098

Logging out of a session is almost as much hassle as rebooting, it saves a bit of time but e.g. downloads will still be interrupted unless you are running them on a linuxterm.

I suggest that we add a command "sume" that is equivalent to "su `whoami` -c" but does not require the user to re-enter their password. Then we can change applications, such as virtualbox and nautilus-share that require rights to particular groups, so that their wrappers run them via sume. This will mean that these applications will "just work" without the user being interrupted in anyway.

How many time you want to move a file to a folder, desktop or a program in the background and have firts resize the windows and them drag and drop.

my idea is simple went you drag a file to the right side (for sample) the windows that content tha file resize in small one and move opposite direction (compiz could be cool efect) just to drop in the place that you want.

GUI for DSL Connection
Written by kir360 the 2 May 08 at 17:30. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
"pon dsl-provider", "poff",... the are to be typed on the terminal to connect to internet with a usual broadband...my Father used to ask : "They can make things really nice to look but doesn't have a GUI program to set up or connect to BroadBand".....While Windows XP or 98 provides easy wizards to setup or connect to internet this way, you need to still type commands....looks like primitive...anyway its just an Eyecandy as far as I'm concerned but maybe an attractive thing for newbies(including me...I had to search ubuntu foroums to know how to get connected to net

Desktop monitor/internal monitor switching for notebook users
Written by mrjobson the 29 Apr 08 at 19:05. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Me and my friends are using notebook as desktop computer and very rarely as laptop. So we want to have an easy solution to switch off internal screen and use external screen with high resolution. And to back up to internal screen when external screen in disconnected (cable unplugged). Easy switching without restarting X!

Focus more on stability and bugfixing in the LTS releases
Written by loa the 30 Apr 08 at 05:54. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu should focus more on stability and bugfixing. Especially in the LTS releases. If this would require waiting with some cool features till after the LTS, then so be it. For Hardy, this could maybe have meant older kernel, not changing to PulseAudio, and so on. A great emphasis should be placed on trying to fix unfixed bugs left from earlier versions.

Most importantly, all found regressions should be fixed. If this means delaying the release for a few months, then let that happen.

This is a particular win for those wanting a rock-stable release for their day-to-day usage, they would stick with the LTS. Those wanting something bleeding-edge, would upgrade to every new release as they come, and the only loss to them would be that once every second year, they would have to wait six months longer for some cool new feature.

An active backports team for the LTS would supplement this very good, so that those users wanting up-to-date Firefox, Openoffice, updated drivers, etc would be able to have those, even in the LTS.

Login screen: Show user names just like in XP
Written by jbfrank the 30 Apr 08 at 10:03. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Similar to XP, for many users it would really help to see which users are 'available' and then to just click and enter the password. Although it is perhaps a little less safe, it would greatly enhance usability for the users. Also, it would be easier for XP users to get used to the Ubuntu look.

Deny network access to applications without a strict network access policy
Written by qaaq the 30 Apr 08 at 19:37. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Right now, any application a user runs can access the network and send whatever it pleases anywhere it likes.

Ubuntu users shouldn't have to wonder if any of the programs on their system are 'phoning home' to check for updates - or worse, to upload information about them in a sneaky way.

I propose that we package strict network access profiles along with every application that needs to use the network.
If no network access profile is present in an application's .deb file, Ubuntu should NOT allow it to access the network.

It should be up to the package maintainer to find out if an application needs to open any 'listening' ports, or access an outside server, etc. The maintainer should then write and include the strictest workable profile possible.

Both SELinux and AppArmor might be able to handle implementation of this kind of policy already. We're already including AppArmor and SeLinux profiles for some applications; we just need the default policies to be stricter. In addition, we may want to configure the iptables firewall as well.

Something like the Authorizations control panel would be great in terms of a UI for seeing which application is permitted to do what. Perhaps PolicyKit integration could allow us to grant or revoke application network access privileges.

Written by satana the 29 Apr 08 at 03:31. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Some users (of server version major) want to have stable version of kernel (2.6.16.60 for now) more than new features.

Please, include it in repositories.

Universal Preferences Short Cut
Written by cowbud the 18 Apr 08 at 05:39. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Every "standard" ubuntu application should conform to some sort of meta key - to open a preferences dialog. So if I am using gnome-terminal and hit ctrl- I get the preferences window. If I am in firefox and hit ctrl- I get the firefox preferences window etc etc.

This is completely borrowed from the Mac OS X camp, they use apple-, but it makes sense and is great for usability.

the problem when you resize an icon in the desktos and them copy to another folder it will keep the size and in the folder you will not see the option to put normal size..

Command for adding deb package repositories
Written by Areso the 18 Apr 08 at 17:05. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
You are often told to add lines like these to your list of repositories by manually editing the sources list file:

# feisty commercial
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main

In my opinion it would make very much sense to add these lines via a command line command, e.g.

sudo repadd deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main "Feisty commercial"

This can be implemented via a simple script.

Desktop Right Click > Appearance Prefs Instead of Change Desktop Background
Written by Double D the 18 Apr 08 at 19:25. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
when you right click on the desktop the last choice you get is change desktop background, and it takes you to the background tab in appearance preferences. not sure if this is intentional but i think people are smart enough to notice the background tab when they click on appearance preferences

Do not use Black Screen screensaver during installation
Written by webhamster the 18 Apr 08 at 20:05. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it is very confusing that during installation, the screen suddenly becomes black. It would be much better if there would be at least a simple image, so that the screen does not look like the computer just crashed.

Notification when plug -in any hardware
Written by retj the 18 Apr 08 at 21:58. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Though the title speaks for itself, it would be nice to see a notification when you plug-in any hardware and make the system offer you many options to do with it, like installing drivers or tell you that there are no drivers for your device or something like that, it sucks when i connect a webcam and the system doesn't react to it.

Option to install RAID/SATA drivers during setup
Written by Ubuntusonicsteve the 14 Apr 08 at 17:40. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The idea is simple and anyone who as ever installed Windows XP or Vista on a RAID enabled mainboard knows what I'm suggesting already.

Recently I tested Ubuntu on a high end Asus workstation mainboard. It failed miserably much to my disappointment. The reason it failed is that the mainboard uses a marvel raid controller which Ubuntu didn't like. This board (P5E-ws-pro) had linux source code drivers on it's CD which could have been used. Windows won't install on this board either unless you use the "Press F6 to install third party drivers" option right at the very beginning of setup. Without doing this Windows will blue screen and fail also.

I'm proposing that Ubuntu adds a component to the setup that behaves like the F6 option that Windows has. This option would read from a USB drive or CD or.... and compile the drivers into the setup so that the drivers will be available during setup.

There are many boards out there that use RAID controllers, and not all of them are supported by the default Linux Kernel. Also most users are not experienced enough to be able to compile a custom kernel, let alone get past the setup error of the kernel not recognizing the RAID controller.

fix problem with mounting storage media
Written by Runn3r.cZe the 14 Apr 08 at 15:44. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
my problem is when i mount some media (cdrom/ flash disk) and not unmount it before shutdown, the folder "disk" stays in /media/ so on next start up, the media which stayed in usb/cdrom is mounted to the point for example disk-1, next startup next mount point disk-2 is created...

it would be better to unmount this media automaticaly on shutdown and next time mount it to same mount point
