Parental control integration in Ubuntu   forum
Written by chrisl the 29 Feb 08 at 10:47. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
I think this is an important feature missing in ubuntu now that ubuntu i offered by dell as an alternative to windows.

Macosx and also windows Vista already have these features installed in their latest operating systems and it is important for users to control the access of their children to offensive adult websites which could be somewhat harmfull as well.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #1244
Written by chrisl the 29 Feb 08 at 10:47.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #1244 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #2: Parental Control - Limit Time Per Day For Users
Written by bl0bby the 17 Sep 09 at 20:27.
I would like a parental control panel which could be added. Users could be then time restricted - total minutes per day, with an option to have the same every day or different times each day. After the time limit is reached they are logged off and cannot log on until the next day. There could also be options for times of day when use is allowed.
A much more involved solution would allow tokens to be printed by the parent with a code which would allow extra time if entered when the time limit was approaching.

Written by maddg3241 the 28 Jan 10 at 03:48.
I think it should have all the features as in the vista because i saw them and was amazed by it so i think that if it does get put in it should be easy to use like in vista

Solution #4: to enable me to define user with calendar time frame.
Written by sanousy.howari the 5 Sep 10 at 14:18.
to enable me to define user with calendar time frame.

so I can either define a general rule like every day can keep working from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, and add a special case like in Sundays he can work up to 10:00 pm.

in Christmas day, I can make it open as an exception, because I might be outside the country!

replace the email method by forum and notification box
Written by sanousy.howari the 4 Mar 10 at 10:39. Related project: Evolution Mail and Calendar. New
Inside any company of over 100 employees the following happen:

Current situation:
------------------
1- I receive an email.
2- I reply to the email including the original text.
3- Usually CC line includes several recipients.
4- some topic related to the subject comes from external parties as a sub-topic of the same discussion, other parties fork by either replying to the old email, or to the new one, and a big mess starts.
5- some employees resign, several information get lost, and none knows how it was agreed to do it.

the result, my in-box is full of the same words again and again while we are responding to each other, also the guys in the CC line, several copies of same previous emails keep repeated again and again, by the way this is business trend to keep history inside the same email!! and it is a fact.

Solution #1: forums instead of inbox
Written by sanousy.howari the 4 Mar 10 at 10:39.
Suggested Situation:
--------------------
an intelligent solution, a mix of:
1- forum server, with a web interface, and tree hierarchy of different subjects interrelationship.
2- mail client to receive only notifications of others replies and link to the forum subject discussion.
3- I create the subject in the forum for example, and invite others to either see, or elaborate.
4- Or: I receive an invitation to see or elaborate in my notification in-box, so I go to the forum via the link, and post my visit or elaboration in the forum, in a new post, so the server will send a notification to the concerned persons of the subject.
5- notification in-box is cumulative, so no need to see a new notification every time someone post a reply in the forum, instead, it is only the subject of my interest gets a once I go to the forum, the indicator goes off.
6- I can attach any type of documents/files inside the forum to my post.
7- back end might be Mysql or sqlite so, a full backup will be always there and nothing will be lost.

Further features of email:
--------------------------
1- Calendar, and scheduling events can be shown as a list of events.
2- Meeting in the forum, can be linked to some subject and calendar event as a minutes of meeting.
3- login ID can be used as the IDs of invited users.
4- email will be kept for external communications (outside the company).

Get rid of:
------------
1- no emails need to be stored locally.
2- Hard-disk failure does not mean any data loss of my emails.
3- forgetting to add someone in the loop, means that I have to search all the forks of the subject and forward them to him, instead I send the link to him for once and he will find all the previous communications of the subject.

Search engine:
--------------
instead of searching the in-box/out-box, a forum search engine could be used to avail the feature, also, subjects will be very limited so anyone can find all posts in a single intra-net web page, single instance of the discussions, and no need for repetition.

Finally:
--------
since long time ago open source skipped cloning others, and started to create its own open standards, I am sure this is a small shell on your creativity ocean beach.

Right Alt key to switch keyboard language
Written by sanousy.howari the 15 Dec 10 at 12:19. Related project: Nautilus. Not an idea
After using Linux for more than 5 years, and heavily keyboarding, I found out that the Right Alt key on the keyboard is not being used for anything, so, it is a suitable key to switch language.

Solution #1: Make it by default the right-alt key to switch language of keyboard
Written by sanousy.howari the 15 Dec 10 at 12:19.
Make it by default the right-alt key to switch language of keyboard

For me Linux is really sweet flexible enough to allow me customize my keyboard to do so, but for others, for my father, the right alt worked for him because he was used switch language in windows by clicking right alt+ right shift :)

Please try it and vote, and please note for respected Native English speakers, you do not need it :P

Kind regards,

Gnome panel like docky
Written by sanousy.howari the 15 Dec 10 at 12:41. Related project: Gnome. Already implemented
Docky is great, but several times I think gnome-panel could do the same functionality if it has an applet to show the window-list applet to show the windows running just like icons without title.

Moreover, gnome-panel forces the look of ugly handlers from both sides while it is rarely used.

the purpose of it, when you need to optimize your PC memory you need to remove all additional performance/memory consuming applications, like compiz and docky or cairo, and default to the basics of nautilus, so why not to have the gnome-panel with a small and nice correction?

Solution #1: Add applet like window-list but with icons only like docky
Written by sanousy.howari the 15 Dec 10 at 12:41.
to create a window-list like applet but instead of MS windows like look of windows icons and title, it just to contain application icons only, so, I can arrange launchers on the panel side by side with the window list icons applet to look like docky or Mac dock-bar.

also, the handles of both sides of the gnome-panel if removed ( for example having an option to show or hide them) will lead a great look like docky).

evolution should display a progress bar dialog box when downloading attachment
Written by sanousy.howari the 11 Oct 10 at 20:45. Related project: Evolution Mail and Calendar. Already implemented
Currently when I open a message with attachment, try to save as ... evolution looks hanging/freezing, while what is really happening behind the scene is the operation of downloading the attachment somewhere (temporary place) and then copy it to my selected folder ( let's say my Desktop).

This caused me to force stop it till I got the mis-leading interface behavior.

Currently downloading a large file (attachment) dominates the whole application response till it is finished.

Solution #1: To display a dialog box notifying user with download operation
Written by sanousy.howari the 11 Oct 10 at 20:45.
there are several ways to tell me as a user that evolution is busy in downloading a big attachment instead of getting the interface frozen:
1- display a progress bar in the bottom of the main evolution window ( also with ability to cancel it is better)
2- display a separate download dialog box with progress bar and ability to cancel/pause large attachments files downloads is a good idea.
3- to allow getting it downloaded via some download manager.

Ubuntu Hardware
Written by anno7490 the 9 May 08 at 17:33. Global category: Hardware support. New
I suggest that canonical manufacture it's own Ubuntu PC hardware to suit the ubuntu OS.

We need to take a look at the simple example of LED screens. You push a letter(eg"A") and the LED's light up to form that letter. The modern LCD displays work on the same principle. So in fact all you need to do in essence is save/preload a group of images/pages/applications using an input device such as a keyboard, which is then saved onto a storage device, and displayed on an output device, i:e monitor.

All hardware/software is then tested by canonical and made available.

Solution #2: Submit OGG players in the markets

Why not to submit players that support OGG format instead of MP3 or parallel with them?

Solution #3: Ubuntu Equivalent to that
Written by Opethbass the 11 May 11 at 20:21.
Even cooler, if a Ubuntu version could adopt this: stripped down with automatic Updates, self testing and a e.g. fast firefox browser. With the advantage integrating at least a few applications. Of course all automated so no worries about maintenance.

I want to propose using some of the chromeOS concepts in a future Ubuntu Netbook Version:

- Browser optimization
- Automated System and program maintenance
- automated File Sync with Ubuntu One
- Automated sync of all settings
- Log in with your Ubuntu One Account on any Ubuntu System in the world and have your personal System available in a Minute
- Integrate Ubuntu One Cloud apps into the desktop

Most of that features are technically available to the ecosystem right now, they just have to be combined like in a puzzle to form a new produkt

It also would be a big argument to bring more people to using the Ubuntu One Cloud. Market the Netbook Edition as part of the cloud, not the other way around.

Opinions?
