I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

Meaning, she really likes it, but any programs that have names not ending in the actual purpose of said program, she won't click on. Like, synaptic package manager she won't click on. Movie player, she'll click on. Most everything in all the menus, she has no idea, so she won't click on it. "I don't want to break your computer, honey."

Me personally, I like to see the upstream name of a program in the menus when I click on it, cause upstream deserves that in my mind. But that only makes sense from my perspective, not wifey's. So, maybe the desktop should have an advanced mode and an easy mode.

Nautilus should be one of the greatest file managers, and one of the tasks it should be able to do is mass renaming.
Thus, it wouldn't be necessary to install external programs and change from one to another to manage your files.

Please make "Run Application" application faster. I really like it, but it's really slow!

There's a very old application called Xmove which does not work well at all. What would be very helpful, is to be able to SSH into a box, (ssh -Y) and run a gui application directed to the local X server (via ssh -Y), but have the X application **detachable**!! The 'screen' command is limited to shell-based programs, but this would be for gui applications that draw to the remote X server via 'ssh -Y'.

So, if the ssh tunnel disconnected, or if I wanted to detach and pick it up again later, I could simply detach it as simply as one detaches a bash shell using 'screen', but for a gui application. The way ssh works now, if I lose that SSH connection, the gui-application dies with the SSH session.

Of course, VNC and NX (nomachine) provide this, but they're **whole desktop** solutions. If one works often with remote-gui applications (as I do) forcing the WHOLE DESKTOP to the client really kills my real desktop, and I cannot easily run both local and remote applications without some creative sizing of the remote-desktop.

The versatility of 'ssh -Y' allows for single-application mapping over remote connections, but there's no way to safely detach it, and allow it to continue to run and then re-attach to it at a later time.

Perhaps this is more of an ssh request than an Ubuntu-specific request (though it is discussed in some Ubuntu forums). Regardless, it's one I've been trying to do for some time.

In the panel, it would be handy to be able to tile windows horizontally and vertically instead of just minimising, maximising and moving to other desktops.

At present, I spend a lot of time resizing windows when it should be automated.

With compiz it should be real easy to have actual desktop previews in a somewhat larger desktop pager. This is the one feature I have missed since I stopped using enlightenment.

I've got two monitors, and right now if I use the wallpaper settings in gnome it stretches the wallpaper across the two monitors. It does this even for the default ubuntu wallpaper. This can look really bad depending on the image. In order to get around this I had to get two wallpaper images and join them into one large one with the GIMP and set that as my wallpaper.

There should be a way in gnome to set a different wallpaper for each monitor.

Many workspaces option in Linux allows you to separate your work, why not allow users to have different wallpapers on each workspace. This allows for easier identification of which workspace you are on.
When used with compiz-fusion you can rapidly switch between your workspaces and the different wallapaper will allow you to quickly recognise what desktop you are on.

Currently this is natively available in KDE but not in Gnome. In Gnome you can't even let Compiz take over the wallpaper control because Nautilus doesn't allow for transparent backgrounds.

Other solutions like Wallpapoz are slow and when switching between desktops it takes too long to switch WP.

It would be useful to create a graphical user interface for the new ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall) in Ubuntu. Would be useful to make every new release with an enabled firewall by default and with this graphical firewall utility also.

Bluetooth support is still a mixed bag in ubuntu. Ubuntu needs to do a better job of making sure bluetooth devices work with the operating system. Headsets are still an arcane science and Nautilus still can't browse a BT device.

Provide this warning with possibility to solve the problem.

At the moment, if someone wants to backup his documents or prepare a migration from a computer to another there isn't much more than file-roller to create a backup.
Ideally, the user should be able to run a graphic software which would ask what the user wants to backup and where (tape/usb key/remote).
Then the same tool would be able to restore the backup.

It would be useful for both backups and migration from a computer to another.

Update : See duplicates ideas which contain even more great ideas about that idea.

It is very frustrating when you get caught out after 30 boots and the system does a full check. Especially if you are about to give a presentation or you just need to read one bit of information. The Ubuntu team have done a great job of speeding up the boot time but this irritation undoes all the good work.

There are lot of people having troubles syncing their devices (pda, smartphones, etc.) with ubuntu. At this poing there is only one solution available, multisync, and works for only a few devices, and it's very limited on their functions.

And I think, this is a very important point for lots of people.

**Suggestions from duplicate idea 397 work on that idea :

1) Clean up the Opensync and SyncML plugin packages to work properly with Evolution by default.

2) Set up an official Ubuntu SyncML server for Ubuntu users.

3) Possibly clean up open source SyncML clients for the different mobile platforms.

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.


Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Replace initscripts with upstart events. Our boot sequence is currently slow, full of race conditions and poor interactions, especially with competition between the series of tasks run by sysv-rc, udev and sometimes just with the kernel. We developed upstart so that we could have a truly event driven boot sequence that would be fast, reliable and flexible; we should take advantage of it.

At the moment it's possible to manage traditional wired and WiFi connections using Network Manager. To connect via a modem, a 3G/GPRS card, over bluetooth to a cell phone or via USB to another device requires that the user installs extra packages, and does a fair amount of configuration that isn't found in Network Manager.

A single unified tool should be provided which allows the user to connect to a network (or internet) via any supported method. It would also be useful to provide an extension to this tool to manage firewall rules and network connection sharing.

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.
