Ubuntu Mobile on the EeePC, cloudbook, olpc

Ubuntu Mobile is targeting Intel MIDs for the moment, but the eeePC is so close to it in spirit that UME could be a very nice alternative to the default Xandros shipped by Asus.
The machine is really cheap and it seems popular. It doesn't have a touchscreen though.
Ubuntu works on the eee, but people report various hzrdware problems (not tried myself yet).

ADD BITTORRENT OPTION ON THE MAIN DOWNLOAD PAGE!
The Novell guys took the lead already: http://software.opensuse.org/
When Hardy Heron was released, the Ubuntu servers became overloaded with thousands of people trying to download it. Downloading rates of repositories and updates were so slow that some people had to leave the computer on at night only to find connection errors the next morning.
However, if Canonical had promoted the BitTorrent downloads, this wouldn't have happened. Everyone would have got a copy of Ubuntu without slowing the repository servers and producing a Denial-of-Service effect.
Moreover, BitTorrent has many advantages over direct downloads. For instance, the more people downloading at the same time, the more sources and lesser the wait. In addition, it ensures file integrity because it uses hash functions, that is, files cannot be corrupted (modified). Not to mention that transfers can be resumed if the connection is broken.
Therefore, BitTorrent downloading should be included in the Get Ubuntu page ( http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ) with a succinct but clear explanation on how to use them.
The fact that this idea hasn't been implemented --despite all the votes in favour-- clearly shows a neglect and reluctance from Canonical decision-makers to do what is best for the community. The worst thing is that they aren't giving an explanation. I hope good ideas in this site don't come to die here in a puzzle of bureaucracy :(
The reason Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution is because developers listen to people. Let's keep that "humanity towards others" alive.

Attention! GVFS: move out .gvfs dir from $HOME!

Since Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 Gnome using GVFS. This is wonderful feature, but some wrong!
See my steps:
1) I go to ftp://user@ftp.site.com by nautilus and gvfs automatic mount it as directory at $HOME/.gvfs/somedir
2) I remove my home dir: rm -rf $HOME
Whats wrong?! It will remove all files on my FTP Server! OMG!
For fix it move out .gvfs dir from $HOME (for example to /usermounts or /gvfsmounts or /mnt/gvfs or some else) and create link in $HOME for it if it's needed.

Stop automount when gparted is running

When you start gparted from a running version of Ubuntu in order to format a USB drive, you need to unmount it first. Unfortunately, automount remounts it automatically directly afterwards which makes it hard to know if it's safe to start formating then. As I wasn't sure, I chose to do this operation from the liveCD but it would be better if gparted stopped automount when it starts.

New users coming from Windows are often disoriented and don't really know the real advantages of Ubuntu or even how to use some of its basic functions (Add/Remove instead of setup.exe). An orientation would help them.
A couple of ideas for how to help them have come up, including an idea about having pop-ups for every new application that's open. The pop-up idea has a few downsides, of course, not the least of which being that pop-ups are annoying to many users, both new and experienced.
One relatively unobtrusive way to introduce new users to the basic functions of Ubuntu is to show a slideshow during the installation process. New users would probably watch the slideshow (they're waiting for the installation to finish--what else are they going to do?), while experienced users might have the option to turn off the slideshow... or they may just get up and leave, knowing that the installation won't take more than fifteen minutes.
Developer comments
A slideshow during the installer is planned for 8.10

Ubuntu needs an easy to use graphic editor

Ubuntu ships with GIMP as preinstalled graphics program. GIMP is a really impressive tool, once you figured out how it works. But there are a lot of people out there, who only need a fraction of the things GIMP can do. There are a lot of simple image editing tasks which can be done with simple programs:
John needs some help to do certain things on Ubuntu. He takes a screenshot of a program and tries to mark his problem with a hand painted error and some text.
Mark has been on a conference trip. He want's to remember the people he met, so he pulls a group picture from his digicam and marks everyone with a name tag.
Under MS Windows MS Paint fills this gap. Don't lough, I know a lot of people who use this program quite often. It does exactly what those people want to do. Nothing more, nothing less. For linux there are some mspaint alternatives [1][2]. But they could need some makeover (in the case of gpaint) or a targeted at a different users (tuxpaint is a program for kids).

Have a usable machine with 256MB of RAM

While it is common for modern machines to have at least a GiB of memory, older machines (2-3 years old) are (or IMO should be) a major target audience for Ubuntu.
Unfortunately, having 256MB of memory makes the machine almost entirely unusable for more than one task at a time.
Even the "minimalist" xubuntu is barely usable with this amount of memory.
I think Ubuntu should do some work on reducing memory usage to this level, at least for the xubuntu variant.

It's impossible to modify anything in ubuntu with resolutions under 1024x768.
My PC has a CRT monitor, with a max resolution of 1024x768, but only at a 60hz refresh rate, so i have to run it in 800x600.

Currently Ubuntu packages seem to be compiled using very conservative compiler switches, so binaries work even on (very) old hardware.
Many other linux distributions (like ArchLinux) take advantage of enabling compile-time optimizations, that results in much better experience in terms of 'feel' (compare snappiness Arch or SuSE have compared to Ubuntu on slower machines, like 500MHz).
Since nowadays *everyone* has at least i686 and MMX (you wouldn't want to run ubuntu, if you haven't had it, anyway) these architecture-specific optimizations are not so specific anymore... Why not use it to our benefit, especially that compiler suite (GCC) improves over time, and make ubuntu snappier distro?

Nautilus is curently very slow especially when opening folders containing many files and sub-folders.
It takes 10 seconds for example to display /usr/bin directory with Athlon XP 2500+ CPU and 512 MB RAM machine. Thunar does the action with no lag on the same configuration.

Nautilus should be one of the greatest file managers, and one of the tasks it should be able to do is mass renaming.
Thus, it wouldn't be necessary to install external programs and change from one to another to manage your files.

If Ubuntu wants to be a serious operating system they need to fix video playing on sites like Youtube and such. My browser always crashes and it is very annoying having to force quit all the time.

Since I don't think many people would be scared of an extra button to configure their selected screensaver, it would be really nice if it could be included (like it is in xscreensaver-settings).

Please add something like this (thanks to kliklik)

___________
Here's a mockup I've done, based on the ideas from this thread and a couple of my own. Tell me what you think.
http://ultimate.co.yu/ubuntu/CopyQueue.png
http://ultimate.co.yu/ubuntu/CopyQueue_Expanded.png
The top progress bar shows the total progress, two buttons beside it pause/cancel the entire queue.
The cancel buttons may have confirmation they pause the queue/item, ask you if you're sure and than either stop or continue the process. For the brave crowd, they immidiately stop the process :)
Folder button opens the destination folder.
Only one process at a time unless forced to start.
Up/Down arrows reorder the items based on priority, the higher ones get processed first.
Clear button clears all the finished jobs.

Check forced at shutdown, not startup

On startup Ubuntu will sometimes say the disk "has been mounted x times without being checked, check forced". Then it will make me wait to use the computer. Why not do this at shutdown instead of startup? When the user starts up the computer, they're sending a message to Ubuntu saying "I want to use my computer now." Not later. When they shut down, they're telling Ubuntu "I don't want to use my computer now." Do it then.
