Ubuntu needs an easy to use graphic editor

Ubuntu ships with GIMP as preinstalled graphics program. GIMP is a really impressive tool, once you figured out how it works. But there are a lot of people out there, who only need a fraction of the things GIMP can do. There are a lot of simple image editing tasks which can be done with simple programs:
John needs some help to do certain things on Ubuntu. He takes a screenshot of a program and tries to mark his problem with a hand painted error and some text.
Mark has been on a conference trip. He want's to remember the people he met, so he pulls a group picture from his digicam and marks everyone with a name tag.
Under MS Windows MS Paint fills this gap. Don't lough, I know a lot of people who use this program quite often. It does exactly what those people want to do. Nothing more, nothing less. For linux there are some mspaint alternatives [1][2]. But they could need some makeover (in the case of gpaint) or a targeted at a different users (tuxpaint is a program for kids).

Open a terminal window through Nautilus

Won't implement
|
|
Sometimes it's unconfortable when you're searching some files (for example when compiling and installing a program) and when you are "inside" the folder in the file manager, you want to compile. You need the terminal.
So, you need to reach the folder and reach that folder typing all the way to do it, and it's very tedious when the program name is too long.
I suggest that in the menu (File menu) it would appear an item called "Open Terminal in this folder" or simply "Open terminal".
Developer comments
This used to be available by default in GNOME but it was a conscious design decision to remove it by default. There are no plans to implement this by default in Ubuntu.

Mass renaming for Nautilus

Nautilus should be one of the greatest file managers, and one of the tasks it should be able to do is mass renaming.
Thus, it wouldn't be necessary to install external programs and change from one to another to manage your files.

Some (most?) printer manufacturers still don't make printer drivers for Linux, or just for a few models or low quality drivers. This make people running into trouble when migrating to Linux. There is a program called ddiwrapper (developed by SUSE) that can use the XP drivers in Linux to make printing to unsupported printers possible (at the moment only Canon drivers seem to work). Of course support as much printers as possible!

Give new life to symlinks.

I really hope for a day in which Nautilus, Konqueror and Thunar would have a good interface for making up your own symlinks, if you ask symbolic links are a very useful unix feature, specially if you are running out of space in one partition, make lending space easier, and some times you do need duplicated versions of the same folder in different places.
Just a "symlink" command in the "new" submenu would work, you can make it only work with folders if you want. Symlinks are SO useful, still in the GUI era, take a look at icon themes, for example.

Attention! GVFS: move out .gvfs dir from $HOME!

Since Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 Gnome using GVFS. This is wonderful feature, but some wrong!
See my steps:
1) I go to ftp://user@ftp.site.com by nautilus and gvfs automatic mount it as directory at $HOME/.gvfs/somedir
2) I remove my home dir: rm -rf $HOME
Whats wrong?! It will remove all files on my FTP Server! OMG!
For fix it move out .gvfs dir from $HOME (for example to /usermounts or /gvfsmounts or /mnt/gvfs or some else) and create link in $HOME for it if it's needed.

New users coming from Windows are often disoriented and don't really know the real advantages of Ubuntu or even how to use some of its basic functions (Add/Remove instead of setup.exe). An orientation would help them.
A couple of ideas for how to help them have come up, including an idea about having pop-ups for every new application that's open. The pop-up idea has a few downsides, of course, not the least of which being that pop-ups are annoying to many users, both new and experienced.
One relatively unobtrusive way to introduce new users to the basic functions of Ubuntu is to show a slideshow during the installation process. New users would probably watch the slideshow (they're waiting for the installation to finish--what else are they going to do?), while experienced users might have the option to turn off the slideshow... or they may just get up and leave, knowing that the installation won't take more than fifteen minutes.
Developer comments
A slideshow during the installer was planned for 8.10, but has been deferred to 9.04.

If you navigate to a folder
eg. /media/pics
Then do a search it doesn't search for items in the folder and sub-directories below, but it is just using tracker's indexed files.
Which is ridiculous if not stupid. Even Windows XP search is not this useless.
Is there a way to separate these two functions (tracker & nautilus) , if I navigate to a folder and then do a search all I want is results with in the folder.
With this Tracker search you can't expect us to index our root folder.
Also if you search for a general term like you .jpg you will get a zillion results. While with the old search it was specific to a folder.
I don't know if many of the developers have worked in a non IT work environment.
Because in these environments the Project folder and filenames are often used to differentiate files, not the contents as most companies use templates.
It would also be silly to expect one to index the data from all the company's projects, as the number of files is so vast.
The old Nautilus (6.10) used to do this beautifully.

I think the nautilus CD/DVD Burner is a very good burning application, and very easy to use. But it suffers from feature lack. So please, take in consideration the following requests :
* add an erase option
* Dissolve serpentine into nautilus to create audio CD
* add an horizontal histogram to show the size of the compilation compare to disk capacity.
* fix progress bar when writing a disk image to HDD.
* fix possibility to write image disk from audio CD.
thanks a lot

Possibility to choose the grub line when rebooting

Often I only reboot to change the OS or kernel and I don't like to wait for shutdown and bios load to finally choose the OS and wait again for OS launch.
I use those unload et and load time to do other things.
I would be great when you choose reboot to have a pop up of the grub menu and choose the next boot selection.
Thanks in advance.

Remove built-in upgrade options

Applications like firefox have built-in upgrade notifications, and sometimes the ability to download/install upgrades. This is dangerous, on a system like Ubuntu that has a better way of doing it.
This is not only a problem for people providing free tech support for ubuntu, it's a security risk in organisations using free desktops.
I'd like to see these things patched out.
