Rhythmbox libraries
Written by majiq the 9 May 08 at 23:01. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In rhythmbox, if I plug in my external hard drive, start it up, target the music library on it as my library everything is fine. But if I start it up later without my harddrive plugged in, rhythmbox begins to delete music entries willy-nilly.

I think it should be possible to have it not plugged in and so it just omits all the entries that came from the external for that instances. That way, if I plug it in without the external in there, it doesn't take away the entries for files that are still on the external; it just doesn't make them options. Also, if I plug in my external later and then start up rhythmbox, it should include all of the files in my library.

This should be expandable to include support for multiple libraries. It's possible to consider this like a Smart Library Listing based on how the library was constructed. If the "import folder" option was used, the files from that folder will only be included if the folder still exists and is readable.

Show outstanding issues at shutdown (eg. unsaved files)
Written by Warbo the 9 May 08 at 19:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Some programs ask the user if they want to save files before they close and when the computer is shutting down. However, some do not.

For those which do the shutdown procedure can either be interrupted or the warning goes away too quickly to be useful due to the shutdown, especially if the application is on another desktop where the user can't see it.

For those which don't obviously data (and thus users' time) can be lost.

I think it would be a good idea to have a list of issues which might make the user think twice about shutting down present in the shutdown selection screen.

Part of the dialogue box would say, for example:

WARNING! Shutting down will interrupt the following activities:
Editing of unsaved document Essay.odt (save button)
Download of large_video.ogg (pause button)
Writing disc MY_SONGS (abort button)

This could perhaps be implemented in a similar way to http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/72/ Unmount Resolution (I am thinking DBus)

A simple and elegant way to differenciate apps launched as root
Written by DanaKil the 9 May 08 at 16:50. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have a simple and elegant solution to easily differentiate an application launched as root (Adept Manager, Nautilus, Konqueror, etc.) and an other one : I use the same color scheme for both users but I slightly colorize the "standart background" (the textedit/lineedit... background color) of the root color theme (salmon color for me).

This way, all my applications looks the same but I can immediately see which application is in root mode (and be carefull of what I do with them !)

I use KDE but I think this idea can apply to Gnome too.

Smarter file transfer: report errors AFTER transfer
Written by carlinuxlearner the 13 Apr 08 at 03:12. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Example of problem:
So if let's say Bob, was copying his whole hard drive, and left it working away while He went to bed, however natilus failed to read/copy file 12,495 so in the morning Bob gets up and finds that he still has to copy 430,294 files!

Idea:
This could be averted if natilus just saved the errors for later, and THEN (once done copying) gave you the option of "retry" and "skip" for those files.
So instead of STOPPING in the middle of the transfer and telling you there was an error copying a file, natilus would just tell you AFTERWARDS. It would also be very nice if there was a "skip all" option. And if it gave you the option (or just did it automatically) to save a log file with the FULL PATHS (and names) of all the files it would not/could not copy.

Pidgin 2.4 in Hardy instead of 2.3
Written by bogdan_5844 the 12 Apr 08 at 18:55. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
(Should be marked as implemented)

Currently,in the Hardy Heron Beta the Pidgin version is 2.3. A new version has been released,2.4.1,wich solves many problem, for example the file transfer send/recieve problem on the yahoo protocol.

I suggest upgrading pidgin to the latest version, because there are many improvements ;-)

Better release notes for Ubuntu 8.04
Written by Ubuwu the 24 Mar 08 at 14:59. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Ubuntu’s goal is to be the most popular desktop OS for humans. But new versions of Ubuntu, like most Linux distros, are still marketed towards Linux geeks. They’re concerned with technology, trumpeting version numbers and drowning out the actual things you can do with their software.

We’re picking on Ubuntu specifically because it has higher goals than most distros - it’s Linux for human beings, not Linux for hackers. Unfortunately, the release announcements have forgotten what humans care primarily about: themselves.

That website seems to be down, but here is the cached version on google:

This desktop tour, linked from the ubuntu.com frontpage, should be much more "Human-friendly"!

Install without formatting
Written by steve196 the 25 Mar 08 at 21:04. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
During install offer the option to not format the / partition, but instead delete and recreate all directories, that have a special role in the system (like /bin, /usr, /etc and so on) and leave those, that the user himself created for other purposes, as well as the /home directory alone.

Collaborative wiki documentation project
Written by Eldmannen the 25 Mar 08 at 20:53. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Not everyone can develop software, as not everybody has the required skill todo so.

However pretty much everybody can write documentation.

We, the free open source software community have a strong, intelligent and vibrant multicultural international community, consisting of lots of bright people who want to contribute.

We could make a collaborative wiki documentation project. A project to create industry-leading, world-class, top-notch documentation of Linux software. Available in many languages.

merge our package managers
Written by DanRabbit the 25 Mar 08 at 15:24. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Right now we have three package managers: gnome-app-install, Synaptic, and the .deb installer.

Why can't these be one application?

give gnome-app-install a backend to handle .deb files, or give it an administrative mode where it has all the power tools that synaptic has. Start somewhere. But end with one spot to manage every application installed on my system, no matter how it got there.

As a side note, another idea was automated install of tarballs. I know this will never be a perfect system because not all tarballs use the generic install method. But maybe push for some way to seperate and deal with those who do use the generic method.

There should be absolutely no reason for anyone to say that its easier to install, manage, and update apps on any other platform than Linux!

Make it simple to mirror and share Ubuntu repositories for local user groups
Written by hgibson the 26 Mar 08 at 10:12. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
PROBLEM: The user decides that he/she wants to share the Ubuntu software. He/She has plenty of disk space and is connected to a LAN at work. How does he/she go about it ?

SOLUTION: Create a GUI for mirroring and then sharing the software. The GUI takes note of the Ubuntu version /etc/apt/sources.list and makes reccomendations. The GUI shares the repository via Apache2, SAMBA, vsftp, rsync and P2P. The GUI also leaves an instruction page in the Apache2 web root on how to use the local repository. The end of the setup should present this page so that the local user can send it via email to interested users.

UBUNTU PRO: Ubuntu spreads like wildfire.
UBUNTU CON: Develop the GUI.

My computer has a single bad memory address in it.
I should be able to use my computer.

Currently I am forced to limit the amount of ram it is able access by a simple cut off. There is a better way:
http://rick.vanrein.org/linux/badram/

I am not even requesting this be on by default. Just the patch/source included in the repos.

Currently we let people test that they have badram, let's give them the best solution we have.

bug

I couldn't believe it today that you can't edit/open a .theme, .desktop, or .config file.
Just create an empty file and name it with any word and one of the upper suffix; doubleclick on it and GNOME will tell you that it is "no directory". Funny.

I file that here because I don't think it's a bug, it's a lack of a feature: open these files with a nautilus servicemenu "Edit..."

Awards for Contributors
Written by mikedev the 26 Mar 08 at 10:12. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Further to the 5-a-day idea, provide certificates and / or awards to contributors who complete a certain amount of bugs / issues. For example, a bronze ubuntu medal and certificate for completing 100 issues, silver for 500 and gold for 1000. Then show a regularly updated table on the web which also shows the countries and ubuntu locos that are winning the most medals.

Make Drag&Drop possible everywhere in GNOME
Written by droetker the 25 Mar 08 at 21:19. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Gnome. New
Drag&Drop is such a intuitive and simple action - it must be promoted.
There are many things that already work in Ubuntu/GNOME/KDE with Drag&Drop, but there is much that can be improved:

- DnD an image from Firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not a textfile with the link to the homepage.
- DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the Firefox address bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
- DnD of devices onto the Pastebin should unmount them (like OSX)
- DnD of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
- fix the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesn't-accept-DnD-files issue: Launchpad bug #61237
- DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
- DnD a file into an edit box should insert a file:// link - KDE has this; Idea #3027
from Idea #4105:
- DnD Attachement from Thunderbird to Nautilus
- DnD Files From File-Roller to Nautilus
- DnD Picture from Nautilus to OOo

...and many more, please submit your ideas, I'll put them into the description!

Password strength
Written by fordplay the 25 Mar 08 at 12:38. Category: Security. Related to: Gnome. New
Warn users if they try to use a weak password. In the style of google account creation.

I originally thought that this would be good for the users login password. However, possibly this could be implemented for all passwords system wide.

Developer comments
With our automatic installation of wordlists through language-support this is actually feasible with cracklib. In the installer environment we don't have localized wordlists, but even with just the English one, cracklib is pretty useful and it does some statistical tests (independent from wordlists), too.

Also, the existing checks in PAM could probably do with an overhaul (IIRC they complain if you use a password with less than 6 characters or so, but they do not do any entropy testing, like usage of special chars, etc.)

Randomise comment nicknames
Written by Auzy the 25 Mar 08 at 02:10. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Nicknames in posts and comments should be less human friendly. We should all be referred to as a number, not as a nickname

Another alternative is to just get people to refer to comment posters by post number, and link posts together somehow

My justification is that:
1) We should all be treated equal as a number. Numbers are easily forgotten, and makes it easy to reply to users, but makes us more anon
2) The use of nicknames promotes "powerusers", who people will unfairly vote any idea for because they had a few other ones.
3) I've seen eldmannen be unfairly targetted by someone with a pointless personal attack
4) I know I'm being unfairly targetted by someone too. My comments should be treated the same as everyone elses. Everyones comments should be treated with the same respect each.
5) Brainstorm should be 100% fair, everyone should have the same fighting chance with an idea! Just because they post what seems to be a notoriously dumb idea once, doesn't mean that people who read the idea should be able turned off, just because they remember the first one.

SPAM will be just as easy to catch, and admins could still be shown nicknames.

A system like this also helps stop continuing bitchiness amongst the same members (some people just like fighting).

Add aptoncd, gparted, startupmanager and bum to the default installation
Written by zuntrak the 24 Mar 08 at 16:31. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In the LiveCD and in the installed ubuntu should have these administrative applications:

-Aptoncd, needed to create our own cd repositories.
-Gparted, there is in the Live CD but not in the installed ubuntu.
-Startupmanager needed to configure grub.
-Bum (boot-up manager), its a graphical run-level editor

Tanks for read :-)
