Add a GUI for NFS clients
Written by racoon97 the 4 Mar 08 at 04:38. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Is it possible to add a graphical tool to join easier a NFS server?

It would be able to :
- install nfs-common automatically
- create a new default directory (i.e /media/nfs) or by a manual choice
- set ip address of NFS server
- submit previous datas to /etc/fstab
- mount NFS file system, (like sudo mount -a)
- (optionally) seek for all nfs servers on local network

I think than nautilus-connect-server is good place to add this stuff.

Add option to throttle speed of Synaptic and Update Manager
Written by Cybercod the 29 Feb 08 at 02:45. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Usually what keeps me from updating is just the bandwidth. I don't like to update if I'm not going to be nearby to address any issues that arise, and I don't like to have all my bandwidth (which isn't so great) taken up by a 200MB set of updates.

I would like to see the ability to throttle how much bandwidth the update process takes. Also, having the ability to do this in Synaptic would make it much nicer for when you wish to download some of the bigger games.

Thank you for ubuntu !
Written by tioum the 29 Feb 08 at 15:49. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
While requesting features to the open source community which consist mainly of free workers, we may often forget to say how much we like Ubuntu and look like costumers requesting.

So you can say thank you to the thousands of developers and users who gave their time by voting for this article :)

I'm glad you like it. I've passed your message on to the developers in #ubuntu-devel on IRC.

Treat archives like regular folders
Written by JJRabbit the 3 Mar 08 at 15:33. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Archives are opening in applications like File Roller. Why? When you thing about you realize that archive is nothing less than special type of folder (and folder is special type of file with defined structure dependent on filesystem). But archives can be presented as compressed folders and opens in same windows as regular folders. Why do we need to confuse user with different windows?

Working with archives will be easy as in Midnight Commander or in Total Commander or in Windows XP. And if it will be implemented like VFS (zip://path/archive.zip/subdirectory/file) or as kernel driver it will be easier due to be transparent to any application.

Update: If gvfs is not possible, mounting the archive could be another possible way to implement this.

Archive managers should be used only for creating archives with non common attributes, e.g. encrypted, splitted to multiple volumes (to fit DVD, CD, ZIP drive, Floppy)...

Note: When you try to drag big file out from the archive from File Roller you need to wait to fully uncompress file before releasing mouse button (once it started to uncompress it). It's bad and very annoying.

Thunderbird as default email client
Written by cmayoros the 29 Feb 08 at 02:34. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
While both Evolution and Thunderbird are great applications, Thunderbird should become the default email client available on Ubuntu.

Developer comments
There are currently no plans to move away from Evolution at this time.

Disable Voting for ideas marked as Work in progress or done
Written by Auzy the 3 Mar 08 at 08:47. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Ideas which are done (or work in progress) should have the voting arrows removed or replaced with a tick for done(or working symbol).

That makes it immediately obvious to people the idea is being actively worked on, or is going to be, at which point, voting no longer has any influence on the idea anymore anyway.

The status of projects isn't obvious enough, so doing this will make it more obvious, and make more sense overall.

Network profiles
Written by refdoc the 3 Mar 08 at 18:30. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There should be an easy way to create via GUI network profiles - where network address, various log-ins, shares, printer, TOR, firewall and proxy settings etc etc are all linked together into profiles - for me e.g. "Home", "Work", "Cafe", "church" etc.

There are scripted ways to do this, but via GUI would be wonderful.

Regex search and replace for GEdit
Written by heavyal the 3 Mar 08 at 18:52. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Another thing that would be nice to see in GEdit would be a search and replace that worked from Regular Expressions. The built in search and replace is nice, but as far as I know it does not handle regex.
