There is already a way of thanking people in the forums for their help but what about a donate option so we could give them a few pounds/dollars optionally?

More Intelligent 'Open With..." Dialogue

The 'Open With...' option in the right-click context menu in Nautilus merely spits out a seemingly arbitrary list of program options to choose from. While there are no doubt ways of registering file extensions with a given program, it is not always the case that you wish to open with the same program. Sometimes Nautilus remembers which programs you have used and adds them to the context menu, but this is sporadic, and appears to depend on the chmod setting of a file amongst other things.
This dialogue would be greatly improved with intelligent ordering of the options - if I have previously used "Text Editor" to open a .pl file, then move that to the top of the list. Likewise, if I have used a custom command, give that as an option at the top of the list.
Furthermore, as Nautilus appears to do a small sniff of files anyway for its awesome 'mini preview' icons, it must be aware that a file is primarily text / binary etc. This could then be used as a factor in the Open With options as well (so I do not get Mplayer as the 5th option for my .pl files for example)

Hard Disk (partitions) should have better names (labels). For example, I have three 120GB Hard Disks, and Labels are "120.0 GB Media" for all 3 disk. It would be better "sda1", "sdb1", "sdc1"...
Also, because of labels, it's confusing to manually mount and unmount.
Example of label mismatch:
120.0 GB Media --> Label on Desktop
disk-1 --> Label in /media/
sda1 --> Record in /etc/fstab
Thank you & sorry on bad English

more appealing startup and shutdown splashscreens

The Ubuntu startup and shutdown splashscreens with the Ubuntu logo and a progress bar underneath it really looks like something from the 90ies (Windows 95 anyone?)
I don't know if there are any hindrances to using images or animations of higher resolutions than what is currently used (for machines that supports it), but I really think Ubuntu can do better here.
This may be an unimportant improvement compared to many other ideas here, but it should be a very quick and easy fix, and it will really help when you try to convince regular folks to make the switch (a graphically stunning desktop is _so_ important when you show it to occasional users!).

remove /usr/games from the environmental path for server

There should be no reason to include the /usr/games environment path on a server installation. This should not be in the $PATH by default, and serves no purpose other then to weaken security. Please correct me if I'm wrong in this.
I did check debian etch installation $PATH variable, and it does not have /usr/games in it.
Moving this to Server rather then security.

Here for example you see an idea where there are developer comments. They are not included in the comments count however, so it says 'no comments' on the front page. This is a bug.

Developer comments are now put in the idea lists pages, so you can't miss them.

Better brainstorm guidelines, and better description of ubuntu team's process

There are absolutely no guidelines at the moment on what makes a good idea. And theres many reasons we need them!
- People keep saying that we are barking up the wrong tree with coding ideas, because "Canonical doesn't do coding" or "canonical shouldn't be inventing new standards".
- We need to know if you want new project ideas, or just enchancement ideas.
- What are you expecting us to write in an idea. You should present examples of ideas, and the format you want us to write them in. And example format may be:
Title: Clear and concise. Mention affected programs if any
Description: Summary/idea, what happens now in the program, benefits of implementation, disadvantages of implementation, etc.
- Without an example, what are you expecting? We need a few examples! So that we know the best ways of doing things
- Should we be targetting certain programs only, do you want us to suggest new protocols, or are they outside the scope of brainstorm? Do you want us to suggest new standards? Without a clear specification of what the ubuntu team actually does, and what they dont do, we cant optimise the process.
- Are ideas posted upstream?
-Help us, help you by explaining why some ideas are particularly good
- Its Software Engineering 101, we are expected to submit random ideas, but we don't know enough about the ubuntu development teams to submit the best choices
- Outline coders strengths in the team. If you have many coders who are good with image processing, let us know, we will place an emphasis on image processing ideas

Synaptic should show a search bar with focus by default when started

When one starts Synaptics manager it takes a long time to be available for use (I am using 1.7GHz Dualcore/1GB RAM!!!).
After that we have to click on "Search" and then type what we want. But most of the time when starting Synaptic the first thing you want is to search for something.
So I suggest that "Search" should not depend on a click to show it's input text bar but rather it could show a large bar at the top with focus as it fires up, so we may start typing as soon as we see the program running.
After one search is complete it should focus the search box back so we search again without our tired mouse.

Of all the things in Ubuntu and Gnome, the improvements that Nautilus needs are really just simple ones. There is not an option to search your files in Nautilus even though modern operating systems like OSX and Vista have already added it.
In Windows under explorer.exe there is a seperate textbox for searching files and in firefox and OSX when you type it just updates instantly. In BASH you just type something like the following: ls *.txt and you will get all .txt files. This functionality is missing.

title basically. We need to add this support. Apple already has it (but they sued or something) but we should still get it because lots of people are switching to Office Open XML (darn ms for using a name like ours for their cruddy formats) and we need to be able to use that or some people will not consider ubuntu as ahead in technology- they will consider it behind because of some silly office format.
Developer comments
As described in this feature list, OpenOffice 3 will have import filters for MS OpenXML files.
Unfortunately, due to a delay of the release of OpenOffice 3, it won't be the default version of Ubuntu 8.10.

The Youtube is a tool of success worldwide. The Ubuntu should have a unique channel that site. It developers include tips, tutorials, explanatory videos, promotional videos, advertisements, and highlights the reported releases.
The possibilities are many, and with the popularity of Youtube would be very interesting for the Ubuntu have its exclusive channel that site.
would be an official channel, promoted and distributed by Canonical. And not promoted by a group of users.

Every week Brainstorm could choose an idea (not necessarily the most popular idea) that is innovative, different or has a fresh perspective and give it some special recognition.
The idea could be marked with a bright light bulb icon and/or appear at the top of the page in its category.

When Window is too big to fit on Screen - Provide a scroolbar
|
|
Written by LostOverThere the 24 May 08 at 12:22. Category: Others.

Not an idea
|
|
Currently, if you run at a low resolution (particularly anything under 800x600) Windows will not fit completely on screen, and you will not be able to see the bottom half of the window.
It should be noted that when the user changes the resolution to a smaller size (under 600px high) the resolution dialog is too big to fit on screen, and the user cannot click or see the "Accept", "Close" or any other buttons/information.
Providing a scrollbar would fix this.
