[refine nautilus] add plugin manager and plugin repository similar to Firefox

Lots of people want lots of different features for nautilus : different views, modes, split modes, filters, opening command prompts, etc.
Nautilus cannot satisfy everyone, since it will make it a bloated, confused mess of buttons and UI elements, similar to Konqueror of KDE 3.5
IMHO, this problem can be solved by adding an extension manager, similar to the one used in Firefox, so everyone can mix and match their file browsing preferences.

Gnome Panel add Applet manager and Applet repository similar to Firefox

Currently, adding new applets to the GNome panel means searching through Synaptic, using different keywords, and hoping for the best.
What about an applet manager, that allows searching and installing new Panel applets directly?

Mpx support for the Ubuntu Netbook Remix

Some newer netbooks might come out with a multi-touch screen, and it would be a good idea to support this feature. The best way to do this is to include mpx when it becomes stable. Also, provide a way to use multi-touch gestures on supported hardware.

Pulse Audio is now in Hardy! The work is never over though and there are several remaining issues to be solved and enhancements to be made for 8.10. A new GUI is needed to replace the old one for audio control if the features of Pulse Audio are to be taken advantage of. It would be nice to see them accessible by default to raise the "coolness" factor as well as enhancing the usability of the current system. Currently, for example, there is no way to change Pulse Audio's default sound card through the existing GUI without installing extra packages, nor can you change ALSA's default sound card (you can only change the default for the sounds made in Gnome, but not for any other programs which use ALSA). These extra Pulse Audio controls should be merged with or replace the current system, or new ones should be made and merged with or replace the current system, or the current ones changed/enhanced. When other sound servers are selected, certain features could be grayed out if unavailable to keep everything sound system agnostic. This will also allow configuration of ALSA as well for those programs which still rely on it (and fix the above problem with ALSA as well).
Idea #2: There are still many programs that use ALSA, which is a remaining issue mentioned in the linked blueprint. If more programs were only made to be agnostic so that users can use whichever sound system they desire, that would be an ideal and much more permanent fix so that patching these programs later wouldn't be required. If some kind of standard is needed to help with this issue, the Ubuntu community could help take part in pushing for that standard "interface", and that would really help. It's sad when programs themselves have to be updated if a different sound server is desired, so it's a problem that should be fixed once and for all with a good, easy, standardized sound interface/language available for all programs to use if there isn't one in existence already. It's those kind of changes that will really make Ubuntu/Linux as a whole much more powerful and flexible and allow greater program adoption, competition, and use down the road. This, IMO, makes this idea more important than idea #1, or installing PA by default, or anything else on this subject, even though those are important too. :)
P.S., Brainstorm won't let me continue because it recognizes the Blueprint URL and won't allow an override, since this idea is a lot different. Overriding should be allowed, but for now I'm altering the URL.

Launch "Games for Ubuntu" contest

In order to promote the gaming side of Ubuntu, it could be launched a "Games for Ubuntu" contest. This contest could be positive in two aspects:
-Attract game developpers to Ubuntu
-Provide more games to the gamers that use Ubuntu
The contest could have just one or several games categories (for instance, shooters, puzzles, strategy, etc.). This would not only promote the development of new games for Ubuntu, it could also encourage existing teams to finalize their projects in order to present them to the contest.
The price could be something material or something more symbolic (like a trip to the Ubuntu central offices) in order not to overcharge the organizational costs.
One interesting way for raising the quality of the games presented would be providing some kind of resources, like kits for developing 3D games, wikis about technical aspects, forums for contacting with programmers, musicians, graphic artists, etc.

Add a Brainstorm intro on posting to main page

I don't see any intro/rules/FAQ on the main Brainstorm page.
I'd like to see something that clearly documents the various features available in Brainstorm, markup available/allowed in messages, a short list of common proscribed ideas or types that keep coming up that don't need to be posted again, etiquette, etc.

The Desktop is usually used as temporary workspace, with anything else being clutter and distraction.
Most of the time, the desktop is covered by active application windows, so anything that resides on the desktop is hard to reach.
Also - this is duplication of functionality - the places menu provides an easy access to drives, which is not obscured by the windows.

If a proposed idea is implemented, then there's no need to show it on any of the "Most popular" lists anymore. Instead, make space for other ideas that are not yet implemented.
The purpose of Brainstorm is to promote *new* ideas. Let's make it so ;)

Tell Mozilla to count all the Firefox 3 downloads from repository

Won't implement

When Firefox 3 is released, make sure it is available to Ubuntu on the same day, so the updates from the Ubuntu repository can be counted for the *Guinness world record* in most downloads in 24 hours.
And most importantly, talk to Mozilla about relaying your Firefox 3 repository download data to them.
More info here: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord
Let's help open source achieve another great victory!
RE to developer: You would have counted downloads, not users...
Developer comments
This wasn't doable, there's no real accurate way to count Ubuntu users.

Option for filesystem check at shutdown

I would like a new option added to the shutdown dialog. As well a Hibernate, Restart, Shut Down, etc I would like an option which allows me to request a filesystem check during shutdown. Whether the check is successful or not, the system must still shut down (think e2fsck -n). This will result in the resetting of the volume mount counter on a successful check OR a forced check on the next startup.
I stress that this should be an option.

Partner with publishing house to sell Ubuntu desktop CD at newsstands

In order to benefit from a new distribution channel, it could be interesting to partner with a publishing house in order to sell the Ubuntu CD at the newsstands. Given that the Ubuntu CD is free, it would be necessary to provide together with the CD some interesting reference material, for instance, a quick start guide (for the new users) and some latest news (in order to also atract more advanced users). This package should be launched in September-January (the months with the biggest interest from the public in nuew publications). A key of the success of this package would be a very stylish design, that conveys that you are getting something very valuable for a small amount of money.
This idea does not pretend to be a way of getting money (the goal would be balancing the costs with the spendings). It would be a way of enhancing the visibility of this operating system. If people sees information about Ubuntu in the newsstands, they will be more receptive to further information about this operating system when they find it again at the web, newspapers, and, thus, they will be more prone to try it.

The only thing most of my friends want Windows for anymore are a few games.
I think Canonical and the Ubuntu community should work closely with leading game publishers to get them to release native Ubuntu ports of their games.

Start An Official Ubuntu Online Driver Resource

Have an online resource such as 'drivers.ubuntu.com' where users can submit, vote or comment on drivers that they've used to make their hardware work properly. This would negate having to search through multiple forums to find help on getting a particular compenent to work. You can search for drivers by manufacturer, device type etc, then download and install by following install directions or tips from previous users.
Check http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/drivers/ or driverguide.com or windrivers.com for ideas or examples of how this would work.

Create a folder called /games and put the same as a standard for all companies and developers of games that this is the default folder of Ubuntu for games. This only for easy understanding of the Linux users(because every game these days is in a diferent folder, and some are not available in paste and others in the folder /home/user being required to install on multiple users), this may also directory be mounted on a different partition.

There needs to be an easy way to recover a Ubuntu installation that got screwed somehow. [Edit: In my case, I uninstalled GNOME and switched to KDE, but then was not able to use my network, so I couldn't reinstall GNOME.] My idea is an option on the Live CD (called "Recover my Ubuntu") that will re-install all the packages that came with Ubuntu, leaving all your files and preferences untouched. This option would also allow for a CD-assisted startup of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu in film and TV serials.

The Ubuntu can be promoted through movies and serials. This type of marketing would be excellent for the popularization of Ubuntu.
It would be very nice to see your character preferred use of the advantages it offers. A secret agent in an investigation is facing a PC with HD damaged. And access to the Internet is crucial to solve their problems. Then the secret agent uses LIVE CD of Ubuntu connects to the Internet. Making contact with their base. And thus solving their problems forever.
An example would be Jack Bouer the series 24 hours by contacting the CTU.
The marketing used in films and TV serials, has an excellent return. I would love to see that solution. It would be very good for the popularization of Ubuntu.
