abstract/virtual package for web server

When you have a different web server than apache or lighthttpd, some packages that require a web server cannot be installed, because they depend on one of them. It would be nice if there were an empty package "other web server" to just tell the packaging system that a web server is already installed.

Comment from Newbie about Brainstorm

I recently had Gutsy 7.10 installed. No Sound. Could not open a PDF file. Could not open a complex Word file using Open Office. All I got was an error code. Went to Google apps and still got an error code with PDF and Word until I tried using a HTML feature and it worked in Google. The beauty of the Brainstorm site for a Newbie is to see why there might be such problems. There is no better 'heads up' than Brainstorm for a Newbie who is wondering WHY. I know about going to the forums to find a solution or why there may not be one. Anyway, I like what I see in Brainstorm and it gives a Newbie a concrete landscape of challenges instead of mysteries. Hats off to those that suggested this idea. I very much appreciate this site and, please, keep it coming for those of us learning the ropes. Many thanks.

Timestamp-based deletion of temp files.

Okay, so I was working on a paper that somebody in my group project for school had sent me through email. I assumed that when I saved it in ooWriter, it would save in the usual user space. NOT THE CASE. It was saved in temp. As soon as my computer was rebooted, all of my work was gone.
To prevent this from happening to others, it would be beneficial for recovery purposes to set a timestamp a week in the future (or some user defined time) to mark the time for the deletion of temporary files.
This could have been avoided, if when opening the file from Thunderbird, it would put a copy outside of temp, or when saving in ooWriter, it would have realized it was saving to the temp directory and given me a warning.
Still, for general recoverability purposes, a timestamp-based solution seems reasonable.
So the main suggestions I'd make out of this event:
-Get OpenOffice and other applications to generate warnings about saving in the temp directory.
-Give temp files a certain amount of time to be recovered.

Fix context-sensitive help: Each GUI window in Ubuntu that comes installed by default should have a Help button which opens a reference page for that particular window. Each window with a menu should have a Help and Context Help items which open a comprehensive user manual and a context-sensitive page from that manual.
Implement What's this? functionality in windows.
Create an easy-to-use graphical manpage and documentation browser.

Offer suggestions of applications (from APT) for unsupported files

Ubuntu should maintain a database of programs for different file types, so that instead of clicking a file and discovering there is no supported program installed.. Instead, they should be prompted with something like the following:
=======================
- There are no known programs installed to open "jakebox" files.
- Ubuntu can install one of the following programs from APT automatically. We believe they may be able to open the file: (Show packages: eg. KJakebox, JB)
- Or you may select an existing program to attempt to open it with. (Show existing program list)
- Or just cancel
========================
This would be integrated with synaptic and catch all unsupported file types, and means that even advanced users wont have issues opening files they have never seen before.
I think all hands would be up on brainstorm when i asked if people have at least once been sent something they had to google to work out how to open.

Many users (including myself) are suffering from lack of sound due to the hda-intel driver, the bug is commonly found on Acer Aspire laptops as well as other laptops. So far there are no definite fixes and someone really needs to jump in and take a look at it.

I think it will introduced in Hardy, because of Ebox. But really don't know, and prefer to have Apache web server as default.
I asked this because of the future ways to managing desktops. (The predictors predicted that future of desktop computers is web (remote or local))
And after that I think you should have PHP and MySQL by default!!

Usplash tends to cause issues at boot and an option to boot the live CD without it, and install with usplash disabled would be beneficial to many to have video issues as a result of usplash.

Every copy of Ubuntu should have GCC and the C Standard libraries available by default. You should not need to download them in order to write and compile C programs.

1. A Less idiot-proof way of hiding the file system complexities by having "Documents", "Pictures", "Music" type of universal folders.
2. Ubuntu would be ideal to sport something like "Time Machine". That way of backup is idiot-proof and Works.
3. Re-package the best Ubuntu Video editor and Sound editor to make it idiot proof.
4. Better fonts.
5. Super professional, cool looking - 'starting templates' for Publishing, Presentation and Spreadsheets.
6. Native first class Photo Manager with essential editing and device-sync capabilities
In a nutshell, Ubuntu needs a uLife suite!!

Should immediately shutdown/reboot without waiting any longer, basically like "sync && shutdown -f"
(This function could even be somewhat hidden by requiring something like ctrl-buttonclick)
