If Ubuntu wants to be a serious operating system they need to fix video playing on sites like Youtube and such. My browser always crashes and it is very annoying having to force quit all the time.

It's great that clicking on the clock brings up a calendar - but why Evolution's calendar?

The majority of people use a webmail service, so having a calendar that can sync with major web calendars (eg Google Calendar, Windows Live Calendar), that is easy to add and remove events to, to add alarms and notifications and to be able to do all of this without opening an email application would be fantastic, I think.

Linux in general has the reputation of being light and nimble, compared to Windows. However, looking at the memory consumption of a rather standard Ubuntu install with Gnome desktop sadly gives a different picture.

Just looking at residential memory (via top):

So, what I'm seeing is that some of the core apps are rather excessive (supposedly Firefox 3 will be better, yes?) But somehow, I can almost understand that.

However, why do little applets and utilities like the update-manager have to consume SO much memory? In fact, shouldn't the update-notifier just be a cron job that gets executed occasionally, and then loads more stuff to notify me on the screen?

Many users (including myself) are suffering from lack of sound due to the hda-intel driver, the bug is commonly found on Acer Aspire laptops as well as other laptops. So far there are no definite fixes and someone really needs to jump in and take a look at it.

I have a USB keyboard and it works in the BIOS, but it doesn't work in GRUB.

This could confuse new users, especially if they want to change the language of the boot cd.

Isn't this a critical point?

The top progress bar shows the total progress, two buttons beside it pause/cancel the entire queue.

The cancel buttons may have confirmation they pause the queue/item, ask you if you're sure and than either stop or continue the process. For the brave crowd, they immidiately stop the process :)

Folder button opens the destination folder.

Only one process at a time unless forced to start.

Up/Down arrows reorder the items based on priority, the higher ones get processed first.

Clear button clears all the finished jobs.

There are lot of people having troubles syncing their devices (pda, smartphones, etc.) with ubuntu. At this poing there is only one solution available, multisync, and works for only a few devices, and it's very limited on their functions.

And I think, this is a very important point for lots of people.

**Suggestions from duplicate idea 397 work on that idea :

1) Clean up the Opensync and SyncML plugin packages to work properly with Evolution by default.

2) Set up an official Ubuntu SyncML server for Ubuntu users.

3) Possibly clean up open source SyncML clients for the different mobile platforms.

It would be great if Ubuntu (or other distributions as well) provide an easy to use remote desktop solution. While it's quite easy to connect to a remote X-Server (x over ssh or nx), it's rather hard to get also support for sound (from the remote desktop), printing (using your local printers on the remote desktop) and other things like "tray-icons" / "notification area" (have the Notification-Icons of remote applications in the local "notification area").

It uses the NX libs and they also provide a client for Windows. But I have not tested it (yet).

A GUI for creating and using encrypted partitions. Should be for regular partitions and especially removable media partitions.

A bootable CD or USB to let you install Ubuntu over the Internet selecting the programs you need rather than the default install. What is needed can be installed more quickly.

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

On startup Ubuntu will sometimes say the disk "has been mounted x times without being checked, check forced". Then it will make me wait to use the computer. Why not do this at shutdown instead of startup? When the user starts up the computer, they're sending a message to Ubuntu saying "I want to use my computer now." Not later. When they shut down, they're telling Ubuntu "I don't want to use my computer now." Do it then.

Support for media formats should no longer be an optional part of any Linux distribution. We need full support for Blu-Ray playback and it should be implemented in FOSS. I don't want to rely on commercially licensed tools for media playback.

It would be great to have Ubuntu working out of the box on Apple's current line of laptops and desktops (MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro). Currently, installing Ubuntu on a Mac is an involved process and things like the wireless networking, touchpad, cpu fans, etc. never seem to work quite right.

Include Compiz Fusion Manager by default

Currently it is very difficult to setup and control access to shared folders without editing conf files and reading detailed instructions on all the variables. I propose that sharing (specifically Samba) be given a well worked GUI and some real TLC to bring it up to standard with the experience on Windows or OS X.

For example, by default a share should be accessible as Read Only by anyone on the network without a username or password (guest access). While guest access should be turned on by default, it should also be easy to turn it off, and if desired to give guests read/write access to the folder.

You should also be able to specify local users who will have read/write access, and these local users should sync with smb users invisibly (ie: the user doesn't need to know that there are two password databases being used).

I propose the Properties window for a folder should contain a Sharing tab with all the options available to choose. I also propose a Shared Folders option in the Preferences menu should list the currently shared folders along with their settings, and provide a button to take you into the dialogue where you can set the options.

Enable Nautilus to use tabs.

Nautilus is Ubuntu's default file management software. There is no reason why you should need to open countless Nautilus windows to manage your files. It is time to bring tabs from your web browser to your file browser.
