File Copying

File copying has been here for a long time. There are some defaults needed still. One is, when I'm going to overwrite a folder, the copier should ask if to overwrite the folder or add only the missing contents within it(including subfolders). This is needed when one has broken a file copy operation halfway. The copy will ask if to override a folder which we know, got copied halfway. So we should be able to specify if to overwrite the already existing ones or just to add the remaining.

Remove Ownerships on USB's

This is practically useless. Sometimes it is possible to create folders in a usb as root. Infact some programs tend to save files in usb as root. But it really does not affect permissions. In a windows os, those files are accessible nevertheless. Therefore only enable folder options such as "read-only" and "hidden" but remove ownerships on usb's. Having access permissions infact makes us believe the files are safe but it isn't. USB's are portable devices. Either use a program like Folder Lock, TrueCrypt i it to make it safe, or just leave it plain without any misleadings.

Add Synchronize Option Between Folders(briefcase)

Microsoft Windows had a briefcase option. This is very useful. For example you have a folder with many docs(100). Now you copy them to your USB. Next day, once you edit them on your pc, you should be able to synchronize the contents with the USB folder and update the files you edited instead of copying all the contents. This would save time and be an intelligent way of handling files. Like a CVS...

Application to View Ports Open

Ports are places of attack. But they are extremely useful. A application server might listen on 80, and the database on another port etc. What is important is, sometimes we need to know what application listens on what port. We could use the command line but knowing ports seems to be needed more often. So I suggest a simple GUI app, with basic functionality like simple "grep" search

Make the thumbnail/folder icon be the file named folder.jpg by default. That way when one renames flower.jpg to folder.jpg, it will appear as the thumbnail of that folder. Windows OS has a similar implementation.

Always On Bottom along with Always On Top

Some of our application windows just need to be in the background - almost at the desktop level. Therefore Always On Bottom should be implemented. For example, when on Pidgin, I chat with my office staff and other clients while working on projects on NetBeans. I keep the chats with staff on top as we discuss technical things. Clients can afford delayed replies so there windows are minimized. I'd rather have at the back. There are many other instances this feature might come in handy. Think of it...

Logs get very big. I had a HUGE log sometime back. Some of the information is critical but need not contain old logs - just a weeks log would be fine. I use logrotate as a cron job. Please integrate a frontend to it. It makes life much easier for admins. Thank you!

Search Files Faster

Google Desktop and many other applications have come by the way for file search. Many users know exactly "Which Area" their file would be which they search. They infact have an idea which folders better be index and which not. Therefore, it is better to have a file for each folder called "Index" which contains its file list. This file should be optional. A user must be able to right click on a folder and select "Do not index" and this file will not be created for that folder. The file should be updated on every file move within/in/out of that folder. Say I have a "Documents" folder with documents from many clients, I would like 'Only' it to be indexed for faster search through thousands of documents. This way users can opt to select only needed folders to be indexed. The "Search" can have an option to select/deselect which folders to search in, along with another option for searching only indexed folders. This would make indexing light-weight and searches more productive.

This comes in as a requirement these days for two things. One is when mounting and using windows partitions, viruses could spread. The other is, VirtualBox can run a windows os, hence letting in viruses. F-Prot is a no hassle antivirus, free for single users. Updates regularly too.

The only thing most of my friends want Windows for anymore are a few games.
I think Canonical and the Ubuntu community should work closely with leading game publishers to get them to release native Ubuntu ports of their games.

Different Changable Password for Lock Screen

Lock screen requires the user password for unlocking. It would be convenient if we could use a different alterable password for this. I lock my screen often at work place for general safety but I wouldn't want to compromise my user password there upon someone looking over!

In many programs, leading to open or save a file will bring front the nautilus. Sometimes, while this is open, we might copy files to the location opens after minimizing the "open file" window. This happens when you sometimes wan to open a file, tried to do it, then remember that it is on the usb, so after plugging in, the window won't show it. For the updates to take place, nautilus needs to be exited. Therefore I suggest a refresh button in it. In these pop-up windows I mean. Nautilus HAS a refresh button for the file browser.

If this works then realistically it shouldn't, or the characters in the title should be filtered...

Customizable installation and all desktops in one DVD

1) A customizable installation (with checkboxes o something similar) you will be able to choose what packages do you want. You will can select or unselect the programs that ubuntu install as a default, if you dont need an email client you will can unselect it...
2) Integrate in 1 DVD unbuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu... you need only select what desktop do you want and what packages (see nº1)
"Ubuntu should be available as a live/install DVD that comes with Gnome, KDE, Xfce, and perhaps other desktop environments. Ideally, it would have equal priority to the CDs that only come with one, which would include being released at the same times. When booting from the disk, users should have an option of which environment to use. When installing, users should be able to chose which environments to install, and have options for installing additional packages designed for those environments (like the gnome and kde packages).
This would allow multiple people who prefer different environments to use the same installation disk. It would be more convenient for people who want to have e.g. both KDE and Gnome. It would make it easier for people new to Linux to learn which environment they prefer. It would make it easier for lesser used environments to gain new users. It would put all supported desktop environments on a more equal ground, rather than sanctioning one as the only "real" and "official" desktop environment for Ubuntu."

Permanently save panel applet positioning between panel states

The GNOME Panel does not know how to save the positioning of its objects between states.
If I move a panel to the left or right side of the screen and back, it won't remember the previous alignment of panel applets.
If I go to a lower or higher resolution and back (which pretty much automatically happens when switching monitors), it won't remember the previous alignment of panel applets.
This has been bothering me for a long time, and I'm surprised I haven't found any brainstorm ideas on it (and one should be available to mark its precedence or lack of precedence as an issue), although I wouldn't be surprised if there were a bug report.

There should be an option to install newer packages rather than the outdated ones on disc during system installation. Doesn't Debian already have this?

Define network-proxy settings in one place

Right now (7.10), several applications have their own individual proxy setting. Ubuntu has a 'network proxy' configuration option, but it only sets the http_proxy variable if you define a static proxy (it won't be set if a .pac script is configured). If the variable is set, it's only available in the bash-shell, not to programs i started on my desktop (firefox, konqueror). As well, synaptic should re-use this setting.
I think it would be great if i would just define my proxy in one place, and all programs would re-use this setting by default (it is ok to override this, if a user wants to do this for a specific application).
Profile switching based on network-location would make this feature even better, but i saw that somebody else has posted that idea already.

I use evolution, however when i need to look at a calendar i have to use sunbird. This is because evolution is basically stagnent, and does not support modifying web calendars hosted outside of the local server. i know there are a few work arounds for getting it to work, but i would really love to have a simple calendar program built into gnome/ubuntu(default) which links between the desktop clock (evolution calendar display) and a web based calendar, which supports bi-direction changes and updates.
I don't like having to open sunbird each time i need to change an alarm.
