BOINC is an open-source “grid computing” software, developed in Berkeley University, that allows to use the idle time on your computer to study diseases, global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research.
I think goals of this project match perfectly the Ubuntu claim, and provide a new social dimension of this kind of software, something like: Ubuntu for life!. Furthermore, promoting this collaboration could provide great visibility of both projects.
BOINC should be installed and configured during Ubuntu installation, so it will be necessary to work close to Berkeley University to adapt and improve user interface during subscription and configuration (project selection, performance impact…).
It will be great to promote an active Ubuntu Community collaboration in projects as the sponsored by the “World Community Grid” helping scientists in projects that need massive computing power to be solved, such fighting Cancer, AIDS or Dengue (
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org).
In addition, it will be great to improve it’s rakings per project, comparing different OS, and including Linux and Ubuntu contributions (members will feel proud of total computing power provided thanks to Ubuntu).
