Enable "apport" by default
Written by Mr. Kanister the 5 Jun 08 at 13:16. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
While being developed (Alpha 1-6, Beta) "apport" is enabled for easy bug reporting, since the user doesn't have to collect the important information himself.

The question is: Why is "apport" disabled in final releases by default?

Are there not sometimes programms that just hang and have to be killed by the user? Are we not sometimes thinking "Should I report this?".

The process "apport" provides an easy to use bug reporting tool to improve Ubuntu, so it should be enabled by default.

Someone could say: "Oh no, i don't wont to see "apport" everytime a programm crashes!". For this case it should provide a simple checkbox: "Don't ask me again."

At the moment, if you want to use apport, you have to enable it in the file "/etc/default/apport".

Urge Barack Obama to support the Free/Open-Source community.
Written by FranciscoPadillaGarcia the 30 May 08 at 05:27. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
What does Obama and Ubuntu have in common? Apart from their African roots, they both represent a grassroots movement for freedom and CHANGE. They both stand for a different approach towards humanity in which everyone helps each other while maintaining a profound opposition towards wars driven by greed.

Therefore, it would be interesting to contact the Democratic presidential candidate and ask him about his position on the Free/Open Source software and what course of action he would take to support it.

Whether we like it or not, the United States of America is one of the most powerful nations and its decisions in economy and trade laws affect us all --even if we don't live in the U.S.

Thus, it is important to urge the (likely) future president of the United States to commit himself to support the Free/Open-Source community by passing laws that support open standards and outlaw anti-competitive practices in the industry as well as promoting the adoption of Free/Open-Source software in taxpayer-funded schools and government institutions.

Although Canonical is a British-based company that cannot release an official statement on U.S. politics, we the users of Ubuntu can raise these questions during campaign rallies and on the Internet. The timing is most appropriate as the candidate is more receptive to people's concerns.

Barack Obama's philosophy is not very different from Ubuntu's and our community. I am sure that he will be more than willing to change things so Free/Open-Source software gets a wider adoption and development.

Remove Password Requirement
Written by etniesbmx the 30 May 08 at 03:54. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make having a password optional, and logging in automatic if there is only one user account.

To install programs, or do anything requiring root access, prompt user: "You are about to access sensitive files. Any changes made may break your system. Continue?" Or something along those lines.

If the user WANTS a password, he can easily create one through System Settings or whatever, and will subsequently be asked for his password at GDM/KDM/whatever and for any root access.

If someone installs Ubuntu and just wants to surf the net and listen to music, why require all this password stuff? It makes logging in a pain in the butt, and these non-tweakers are not going to take the time to poke around in settings to set up the auto-login; they're just going to get annoyed.

So make password-less Ubuntu (for normal people) default, and leave password enabled (tweaker-centric) Ubuntu an option.

Divide Comments Into Page Numbers

I think it would look more neat if comments were divided into pages. It would reduce loading time and you won't have to scroll down so far.

coLinux integration
Written by Nazo the 30 May 08 at 05:09. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
coLinux is kernel patches/windows programs that works linux kernel in windows natively. This brings windows high compatibility with standalone linux.
http://www.colinux.org/

You might hate Windows. But an increase of the OSS user is good, I think. Because it become runup time for standalone Ubuntu.

needed work:
-include coLinux kernel package in repository
-include coLinux windows host package (See 5.2 section of http://colinux.wikia.com/wiki/BuildingColinux0.8.0 . install/upgrade should be grub-install like way, I think)
--include some library/tools package compiled with mingw cross compiler (needed to build coLinux windows host)
-include coLinux linux host package

News Ticker in Title Bar
Written by NEUR0M4NCER the 30 May 08 at 12:52. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
An aesthetic suggestion, but fun nonetheless:

To begin with possibly only for Firefox/Mozilla etc - an app that checks the window title, refers to a (perhaps remote? or a local list that updates regularly) list of popular websites, and returns a scrolling news feed across the title bar in place of the original title, from that site.

e.g. Visiting www.IMDb.com would result in IMDb's news feed scrolling across the title bar in place of the title. For 'unknown' sites, the original title can remain, or have an option for user defined 'default' news feed (BBC or CNN or whatever).

IMHO the window title is next to useless as long as the program icon is still displayed in the corner of the window, and this seems a great way to use wasted desktop space.

Shouldn't be too many problems on the ethics & usabililty side, as websites would surely appreciate another way to get their content onto the desktop, and as stated above, if the user chooses, they should be able to override the setings to simply show one news feed for all sites, or none at all.

If the above works, as it is (I guess) a window manager-side idea, then it shouldn't be too hard to implement it on other programs (again, user definable), so that upon starting, say, OpenOffice.org, you get a feed from OOo (program feeds should perhaps only be run through once - i'm sure it would be annoying/distracting if running in a loop).

Again, developers might welcome the possibility to communicate with end users in an integrated fashion, without the need for the user to actively seek them out, and the user would benefit from program specific, up-to-date news/tips/updates.

Control Center Similar to PCLinuxOS
Written by xavi1337 the 29 May 08 at 19:23. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
PCLinuxOS has a great control center that should be brought into Ubuntu. The Preferences and Administration menus are currently very cluttered and not very descriptive. By having a control center to change almost all system settings users will know exactly where they need to go to make changes.

Perhaps take the Mint control center a a base to start from and implement some of the usability and descriptiveness of PCLinuxOS.

Brainstorm advanced search: filter by number of votes
Written by Ubuwu the 29 May 08 at 21:35. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice if it was possible to filter by a specified number of votes in the advanced search form. E.g. I would like to be able to retrieve a list of ideas with at least 200 votes in random order.

Nautilus (Mac OS9 Feature) addition
Written by maxfridbe the 29 May 08 at 21:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I love this on particular feature of Mac OS 9 and would love to see it in Nautilus:

In OS9 you could take a folder and drag it to the edge of your desktop where the folder would turn into a tab (named with the title of the folder) on the edge of the screen. When you click on the tab the folder would "Slide"(Although the animation is unnecessary) out and allow you to preform normal folder operations. When you clicked on anything other than the popped out folder it would turn back to a tab on the edge of the screen. These tabs could be dragged to any location on the edge of the screen. Even though there are multiple virtual desktops, I believe that this would be useful as long as someone does not drag the folder past the screen edge (which would cause it to drag on the next workspace). I seem to recall that you were even able to color code tabs. I have never encountered a more useful file manager addition as this and would love to see it replicated to make Ubuntu great.

I'm sorry i couldn't find an adequate screenshot of this feature, if u see it please reply with it.

Create a new brainstorm category for Translation
Written by bert.ubuntu the 30 May 08 at 04:14. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Translations are way too important for the Ubuntu project. I see that many people proposing ideas for translations are always giving it different categories (not agreeing at all even when the ideas are similar).

Not to mention the many people who have to choose "others" as the category for his/her idea related to translation actually).

Rapid reboot using kexec

Kexec allows you to load another kernel from the currently executing Linux kernel, making a reboot much faster. It avoids long reboots, BIOS POSTs, and boot loader time. This can take 10 seconds in optimal situations; but with SCSI or RAID BIOS and network boot roms, the time can climb to 20, 30, or even over 60 seconds.

This is especially useful after updating the kernel and after installation from the live cd when a reboot is necessary.

Option to import email from Windows during install
Written by qwicfingers the 30 May 08 at 15:21. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The installer already asks if you would like to import data from a Windows installation, it would be nice to add email to this list. This would greatly improve the ease of migration from windows.

Help with error messages
Written by fordplay the 30 May 08 at 10:46. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If a users gets a error message the first thing they usually do is google the error text.

I suggest adding two buttons to the error message box if the user has internet access.

Button one: Automatically opens the default browser and searches google with the error message. The search engine could be customisable in a similar way to the firefox search box, if needed.

Button two: Automatically opens the default browser and searches the ubuntu forums with the error message.

TTY : change default resolution for high resolution monitor
Written by ax the 30 May 08 at 12:37. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
English :
-------------
Yep,
Most monitor allow resolution higher than 1024x768 and now in wide.
If Xorg detect default resolution higher than 1024x768 it should be good to set default tty resolution to 1024x768 for nice use/view.

if it was, sorry for my bad english =)

Francais :
--------------
Yep,

Take a look at my ideas

add a "view in english" button to all error messages
Written by briceparent the 30 May 08 at 09:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hello!
When you use Ubuntu in any other language than English, when an error message is shown, of course, it's shown in your own language.
...But, as the best way to solve the problem, is googling it, and as most of the documentation there is in english, it would be a good thing to have a button (or a right-click entry) on that kind of message to print (or copy to the clipboard) the exact syntax of the original message. When we try to translate it ourselves, we can't really now how it was written in the original message thought there are different translations for a single message that could be used.
This would also be great to help us submit bugs.

Thanks

Brice

Different Changable Password for Lock Screen
Written by ravindranathakila the 23 May 08 at 07:22. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Lock screen requires the user password for unlocking. It would be convenient if we could use a different alterable password for this. I lock my screen often at work place for general safety but I wouldn't want to compromise my user password there upon someone looking over!

Refresh Button In Open File Menu
Written by ravindranathakila the 23 May 08 at 03:23. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In many programs, leading to open or save a file will bring front the nautilus. Sometimes, while this is open, we might copy files to the location opens after minimizing the "open file" window. This happens when you sometimes wan to open a file, tried to do it, then remember that it is on the usb, so after plugging in, the window won't show it. For the updates to take place, nautilus needs to be exited. Therefore I suggest a refresh button in it. In these pop-up windows I mean. Nautilus HAS a refresh button for the file browser.
