Build Flash editor Replacement which uses HTML/Javascript/SVG/AJAX
Written by Auzy the 1 Jul 08 at 08:42. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd like to see an Adobe Flash-like editor, which creates output as a HTML file (using HTML,SVG,Javascript & AJAX) instead of a custom file format. This will allow the files to run on ANY web-standards compliant browser, without requiring external plugins for every single browser. Such files will just work (even on mobile devices)

Advantages & Disadvantages
The main advantage is that no plugins or virtual machine is required. Any standards compliant browser will support the file, and any OS which has a standards compliant browser will support it.

It would also be much more secure, because all files would run within the confines of the browser. Flash for instance bypasses cookie controls because it stores its cookies outside of the browser. This is exploited by companies to track users. And as long as the browser is secure, the files will be too.

And, the editor could even be implemented as a web application, so that users don't need to install a development tool. And since it uses basic javascript, extensions to the editor could be easily made (this isn't possible in flash/Gnash/whatever else).

The only disadvantages is that the files will run a bit slower for now until the next round of browsers with faster javascript execution. And we may need to wait for the next version of HTML for the additional multimedia capabilities.

Examples of Current SVG/HTML/Javascript Combos include:
Photos Example
Tetris Example
Interactive Slide Show

If there is enough enthusiasm to code such a project, I would be willing to help program.. This should definitely be taken up by someone though so that we no longer need flash.

Develop a competitor to Flash/Silverlight
Written by Thelasko the 30 Jun 08 at 21:10. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For years Flash was the only way to embed multimedia in a website. Microsoft is now trying to enter the market with Silverlight. The Open Source Community should do the same. An open standard needs to be developed for embedding multimedia into websites, so both content providers and users aren't locked into one vendor.

Alt+Tab should minimize fullscreen applications.
Written by Nxx the 27 Jun 08 at 12:43. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Often you play a game and need temporarily swotch to another task. There should be a shortcut to minimize a fullscreen application to free the desktop.

Same distro, different flavors.
Written by sonicskywalker the 26 Jun 08 at 15:45. Category: Installation. Related to: Live CD installer. New
I think it would be neat to be able to download different versions of ubuntu which target different audiences. I'm not talking about Kubuntu, Edubuntu, etc., I'm talking about providing different default package sets aimed at certain users. For example, there might be an Ubuntu for Windows converts like me that comes with Wine installed as well as tools similar to the ones that come with Windows (sound recorder, disk manager, etc.), or maybe one for developers that has GTK development tools and a few IDEs installed and ready to use.

In this way, new users would have an easier time setting up their systems.

more democratic voting system for brainstorm
Written by azag the 25 Jun 08 at 14:20. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
now if 5001 users vote +1 and 4999 vote -1, the result is just 1 point

this isnt how a democratic system works.
and i think ubuntu brainstorm needs to be democratic.

is not the same if just 1 user voted +1, or 51 users voted +1 and 49 voted -1
than 5001 +1 voters, despite the 4999 -1 voters I think the idea must be raised from the other examples.

lets say there are 10000 registered users in brainstorm.
so 5001 is more than 50% of the voters. the positive voter would be the winner.

ideas:
* make "hot" status when some idea has alot of voters and include this in the sort
* show +1 and -1 votes
* show just % of +1 voters

Eliminate PC speaker-based system bell permanently.
Written by sigmabeta the 24 Jun 08 at 19:03. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's the year 2008 and there's no longer a need to utilize the PC speaker for ANYTHING. As a KDE user I am constantly bothered by the system bell, particularly in Gnome apps like Pidgin and Firefox. If I were on Gnome I could easily go to a menu and shut off the system bell, yes. But even that shouldn't be necessary, and an inexperienced Linux user would have no idea how to do this.

The fact is that the PC Speaker is annoying to people who know what they're doing, and scary to those who don't. It also makes it hard to pitch Ubuntu to new users - who think the system bell noise means Ubuntu is doing something bad to their computers.

It's time to step into the new millennium, folks. The PC speaker is completely obsolete. Windows XP realized this in 2001 and used the PC Speaker ONLY in the absence of a properly working soundcard. Not only is this not a common problem (in Windows or Linux), but it would be easy to implement a similar compromise - using the bell only if no sound device is working.

Have Top "X" Best Idea Contributers

I think it would be pretty cool to have somewhere a ranking of the top idea contributers to this site, whether it be top 10, 50, 100, etc.

merge back into Debian and end Ubuntu
Written by slashdotaccount the 18 Jun 08 at 18:46. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make hardy the last Ubuntu release ever and from then on work on merging remaining Ubuntu developers, changes, ideas, bugs, users etc back into Debian. Don't work on Ubuntu, just work Debian instead. There was no need to fork in the first place, please fix this. Canonical can make money Debian fine, they don't need a forked distro and forked community to make money.

Ubuntu Branded VoIP service - TeleComms Promotion & Services
Written by Tree MendUs the 18 Jun 08 at 00:41. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are some VOIP systems that work well on Ubuntu.
So why not use them "for" Ubuntu ?!

There is some "shopping around" to find ones that work well, and which services are either free or reliable.

Ubuntu is in a position to provided a trusted service to its users.

The telecomms and media industries are full of sources of additional revenue - advertising, partnerships, hardware re-selling, professional (pay for) upgrade packages, etc.

Ubuntu would benefit from being able to establish voice comms between project members both for Ubuntu OS and fro programs.

Users might be able to use it for their desktop VOIP systems (e.g. Ekiga). The service could be ready to run soon after OS installation.

Old PCs could get re-used as email, browser, and VOIP terminals.

Ubuntu enters marketplace with opportunities to make "some" profit, promote the brand, showcase capabilities and user environment.

A separate or subsidiary entity could be created to run the operation.

A server network could be set up around the world. Local users could voluntarily provide bandwidth and/or hardware to initiate a local service - removing expansion costs from Ubuntu.

Very easy to be an alternative to skype.

Local servers could link into the local phone system, though this service may need to generate revenue to cover costs.

Bet for KDE 4.1 as official Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop
Written by retj the 11 Jun 08 at 16:20. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
BEFORE VOTING DOWN PLEASE CONSIDER THIS:
(I know almost everyone would hate this idea but i'll give it a try)

When Ubuntu was born canonical decided to use Gnome as default desktop. Why? Because Gnome is Simple, Easy, Just Works and KDE 3.x is just too messy and kind of not easy to the eye.

But KDE 4 has arrived and gives a new meaning to the word usability.
How? well it was re-written and now is way more efficient with your ram, which, let's face it, gnome sucks.

New Interface! Now KDE looks as organized as Gnome! And just as beautiful as Mac OS X.

Right now it's just a Beta Release but when it becomes stable it will be a awesome improvement.

Add a donate option to Ubuntu Forums
Written by cowanh00 the 10 Jun 08 at 13:58. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There is already a way of thanking people in the forums for their help but what about a donate option so we could give them a few pounds/dollars optionally?

[refine nautilus] add plugin manager and plugin repository similar to Firefox
Written by mangar the 10 Jun 08 at 14:08. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Lots of people want lots of different features for nautilus : different views, modes, split modes, filters, opening command prompts, etc.

Nautilus cannot satisfy everyone, since it will make it a bloated, confused mess of buttons and UI elements, similar to Konqueror of KDE 3.5

IMHO, this problem can be solved by adding an extension manager, similar to the one used in Firefox, so everyone can mix and match their file browsing preferences.

Ubuntu with codecs
Written by vexorian the 8 Jun 08 at 14:13. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
So, after analyzing this: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9637/ and seeing how some people really like codecs for proprietary formats, I think I must say this:

- Remix's codec licensing(tax) should be optional (Refer to the other brainstorm's link)
- As a matter of fact the same goes for flash and adobe reader.
- Now that canonical licenses codecs in remix, I think there should be a way to order online or purchase a download of a desktop ubuntu CD that comes with those codecs installed and legally licensed, so if some people really think it is important to have their codecs preinstalled they could put money where their mouth was. The condition for this not to be evil would be that the codecs were the only difference between these both variations of the desktop ubuntus. The OS would still be free whatsoever, but if people want to license codecs, they would be able to. In other words, they are actually purchasing the codecs, the ubuntu installation is a freebie that comes with that purchase.

Adopt the "Notebook Remix" theme for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex
Written by climatewarrior the 5 Jun 08 at 20:30. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that the "Notebook Remix" theme is great. It is sexy, bold and innovative, just like GNU/Linux ;). http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/03/canonical-makes-ubuntu-netbook-remix-officia l-at-computex/
I know that a lot of people don't like the "brown" in Ubuntu but this variation of the theme is way better. What do you think? I think its great because it sets Ubuntu apart from all others but at the same time its simple and elegant.

P.S By theme I mean just the color and art. Not the interface itself.

Display Manager: Better Login Screen
Written by natureflow the 5 Jun 08 at 14:32. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Display Manager should offer a login screen where you can select users from an user list WITHOUT a text field to enter the username. May you should be able to select one user and login without any password if you want. It should be possible to set an background. Make it possible to select the computer on which you want to login.

if the ubuntu had something like "dreamweaver" to let us work with stuff like html, flash, php and so on....like.... well... dreamweaver has a lot of style, power and attractiveness.... and what concerns those matters, i have to shift to windows (unfortunately may i say....) shouldn't we have a solution in linux close to this? easy to use, great to use and powerful?

[refine eclipse] do something about memory consumption
Written by mangar the 1 Jun 08 at 09:35. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm currently running (at work), side by side, two development environments:
Eclipse 3.4rc1, with a C "hello World" project (we use eclipse for embedded development).
Visual studio 2005 + Visual Assist X, with 6 open sub-projects (A WDF Windows driver)

Eclipse consumes 142mb of memory (when working on medium projects - the memory consumptions goes to ~380mb)
VS consumes 51mb of memory. (on larger projects ~80mb)

(a VM virtual machines that runs in the background consumes an extra 1.1gb of memory - all extra memory is being used, constantly).

Please do something about memory consumption, eclipse becomes unworkable when trying to open multiple projects (as it kills the memory).

[refine f-spot] add seperator between categories
Written by mangar the 28 May 08 at 07:27. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
currently, f-spot shows all the pictures in a continuous stream, with no separation according to the select date / folder/ whatever.
please add a separator between the categories, otherwise not enough information is provided to allow for that distinction.

for example:
[] - a picture
instead of :

[] [] [] [] [] [] []
go figure what belongs to where,

party pictures
[] [] [] [] [] [] []
funeral pictures
[] [] [] [] [] [] []
