Convince the people from mozilla to make a version of firefox that uses webkit instead of gecko...it's faster and use less memory.

Safari feels extremely smooth when scrolling. I want this in Firefox too. If it's already there, please add it as default.

Inkscape - printing landscape
Written by ampers the 6 Dec 08 at 10:40. Category: Usability. Related to: Inkscape Vector Graphics Editor. New
To print Landscape, in Inkscape (a Coreldraw look-a-like) one has to do the following.

1. Draw your artwork in landscape mode.
2. Save to File (PDF)
3. Download Adobe PDF reader.
4. change orientation in the Adobe program.
5. Print

I have heard this has to be done in quite a few other programs.

I was quite shocked when I found out.

This is steam age computing.

Performance must always be a major concern
Written by romu the 7 Nov 08 at 10:40. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I recently switched my Macbook Pro from Hardy (fresh install) to Intrepid (fresh install).

And I'm really disappointed but performances issues: DVD playback is not as smooth as it was in Hardy, and my Internet wireless connection speed is been divided by 2 at a minimum.

If I take the simple example of my wireless: was it really useful to people to switch from a well know performing driver like madwifi, even if not more supported, to a pretty new, instable and buggy driver like ath9k (in my case)?

Ok for the features, but whatever the domain or application we talk about, a switch should always be without any performances loss.

I think the recent Phoronix test perfectly illustrate this point:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_bench_2008&num=1

What about adopting a different Ubuntu schedule? for instance, we should think about keeping the 6 months release schedule but differenltly:
X.04 for features
X.10 for performances

Or something similar.

Ditch openoffice from the cd and include other useful things
Written by pepperpupper the 19 Nov 08 at 13:37. Category: Usability. Related to: Live CD. New
The idea is to have openoffice as a seperate package, and instead include other things that might be considered more closely related to the OS itself.

Things I have in mind are:

Sysinfo
More wallpapers
VPN support out of the box
The dust theme
Nautilus-gksu
Nautilus-convert
Main menu
Compiz Config

Why do I think this is a good idea? It is very easy to find OpenOffice if you are interested, but for a new user, it will take a while to find out about all these tools, which are basically enhanced OS-functionality. An example of this is the fact that many people here on brainstorm requests "rightclick-runas-functionality", better system information etc. Many of these things are already available, but can take a while to find.

Guest account needs a change
Written by toucher5 the 19 Nov 08 at 19:51. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The new guest account in 8.10 needs to be accessed from the login screen not from inside another account. This is redundant and poses a security threat. Great idea but since Ubuntu is based on Debian, security needs to be a top priority. Keep the guest account but like I said before it needs to be accessed from the login screen.

Keyboard and Mouse
Written by eramosr02 the 19 Nov 08 at 15:55. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Live CD. New
Why gnome and Ubuntu does not have a Gui like KDE to change the Keyboard and Mouse configuration that give predefined options like Windows (Winl key, Alt Space, etc), MacOS(other), etc. With the actual program you cannot make keyboard shorcuts with de Win L oherwise in KDE we can use it.

Anyone who refers to Windows when judging an idea should be shot
Written by DavidONE the 25 Mar 08 at 23:28. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm tired of reading people who respond to suggestions, ideas and requests with:

* "Ubuntu is not Windows"
* "If you like Windows so much, go back there"
* "Why are you using Ubuntu if you like Windows?"

Ideas need to be judged on merit and value, not their origin.

I therefore suggest all those who reference Windows like this when dismissing ideas should be taken outside and shot. If there are legal issues with shooting them perhaps they could be dragged behind a horse for 20 minutes.

Universal spelling-check and auto-correct for ALL text inputs in any program
No information about this blueprint
Information is updated every 5 minutes.
Please wait till the next update.
spec
Written by Endolith the 25 Sep 08 at 16:48. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Firefox has spell-checking. Word processors have spell-checking and auto-correct. Pidgin has spell-checking and an auto-correct plugin. Thunderbird has spell-checking but no auto-correct. Some text editors have spell-checking, others don't.

But each of these programs uses its own engine and its own dictionary, duplicating the same overlapping functionality in many different programs, wasting developer effort, and resulting in incomplete dictionaries/functionalities. Why?? The Linux/Unix philosophy is supposed to have a bunch of small, well-written programs that do one thing and do it well, which are then used as components inside other apps.

We should have a single spell-checking and auto-correct (and predictive text and grammar check and grammar autocorrect?) engine, and it should be available for ANY text input field in ANY program (including single-line forms, search bars, quick find, etc.), with a single centralized dictionary that gets updated on a regular basis, and a single centralized user dictionary for each user. Then I can define new spellings or corrections (or remove ones I don't like) and have that change automatically be used for all apps.

Also, it would be best if users had a trivial way to optionally upload their custom-defined words back to the central servers, so that they can be added to the next release and benefit everyone.

Work with Google to do a joint release of Chrome
Written by RuntimeError the 2 Sep 08 at 08:49. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
Work with Google to receive an advanced Linux version of Google Chrome so you can package it and put it in the repositories at the same time of the release.

Developer comments
We've imported it into launchpad:

https://launchpad.net/googlechrome

It will be a while before it runs on Linux however, we'll keep watching upstream.

I would donate a Dollar for a FREE fully-featured FLASH plugin
Written by elias1884 the 29 Feb 08 at 22:29. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If you would donate a Dollar or more for a fully-featured but free and open source alternative to Adobe's Flash plugin, then vote "+" for this idea.

Please do NOT vote "-" if you would not donate a cent. Just leave it alone!

There is not negative dollar in real life either. We don't want to vote but count dollars here! Unfortunately, there is no facility for that in Brainstorm yet, so we have to do it that way. Please play along and don't sabotage it with "-" votes!

By the way, there is an idea to support donating money to ideas. Please support it!

Most business laptops and some of the end user ones too now include a fingerprint reader.
Those are perfectly possible to use on Linux either by using thinkfinger (IBM/Lenovo) or fprint (HP).

The various PAM modules for those should be installed by default or at least be easily installable and integrate correctly in the default desktop.
GDM, gksudo and the gnome screensaver would have to be modified in order to correctly support fingerprint readers.

That way the user would be able to login either by entering is password as usual or using his fingerprint.

Allow users to log into Ubuntu Forums and other Ubuntu sites (such as ubuntu brainstorm) using their OpenID.

Developer comments
Work is being done along to make that possible (though I don't know an ETA).
First step: the Fridge (http://fridge.ubuntu.com ) is now using Launchpad authentification via OpenID.
