recognize Ubuntu eee as official derivative
Written by Xfactor the 11 Oct 08 at 17:35. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Recognize "ubuntu eee" as a derivative. 'Ubuntu eee' for the eeepc of Asus is really a linux for humans.

Easy, fast and reliable. Even my mom can compute with this os. I love it.

They have automaticaly set the wlan driver for the eeepc and the default Ubuntu doesn't. So they really have something to offer.

The Ubuntu eee project really can contribute to your efforts of making Ubuntu popular, because many people want to buy or have a eeepc.

It is so much better than that Xandros os that was installed on my eeepc 900.

Update-manager: Show the repository where each update is coming from.
Written by Ubun2ideas the 11 Oct 08 at 16:47. Category: System. Related to: Update manager. New
Update-manager just shows a list. I have no way of knowing which repositories are behind which updates.

What is to prevent a third-party repository from pushing updates for *any* package on my system?

Example: Say I add the repo for Banshee media player. I expect (and trust) it will only push updates that involve Banshee, but what is to stop them from pushing a non-banshee related update? Maybe it's a bit paranoid of me, but I'd like to know which updates are coming from which repo. Then, at least if I see a third-party repo pushing an update for something like sudo, then I'll know something is fishy - but right now I have no way of knowing where the updates are coming from, and that bothers me.

Also, the update-mananger, could possibly group the update list by repository.

bug
Written by flip314 the 20 Mar 08 at 06:32. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's really annoying to set up a dist-upgrade, leave it overnight, then come back in the morning to find out that it's waiting at 10% done so you can click "ok" in a debconf window. So, you click ok, come back in an hour, and it's stuck at another dialog. After about 5 iterations of this, you've FINALLY upgraded.

dist-upgrade should either queue all dialog boxes until the end of installation, or anticipate them beforehand so you can click through them all and then leave.

Don't open folders when dragging files over them in Nautilus
Written by rainwalker the 9 Apr 08 at 00:51. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When dragging a file in Nautilus (in list view), it will expand folders that have already been moused-over. It's like the selection stays on that folder even though I'm scrolling past it. The only way to avoid this is to constantly move the mouse around while dragging so that one folder doesn't stay selected.
This is more of a smoothness issue, really.

Make it easier to report duplicates
Written by gedeon the 18 Apr 08 at 08:35. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When reading new ideas, I often know that it's a duplicate of some other idea, but I don't know which one. And it's currently too cumbersome to report a duplicate, so I don't do it (call me lazy if you wish, but I'm sure I'm not the only one). Besides, I think it's important to catch duplicates early, so that people don't spend their time uselessly by reading and voting on duplicate stuff.

Here is how I think it could be improved:
- have a report duplicate button next to each idea in the idea list (we don't need to click on the idea itself).
- have the duplicate system (optionally?) work the other way round, ie add the possibility to mark the *current* idea (ie the new one) a duplicate of another, instead of requiring the user to first find the other idea, use the report duplicate form, go back to see the duplicated idea's number and enter it in the form.
- add search capability/embed a search form directly within the report duplicate page (in a similar way as in the "submit idea" form -- though with some criterion as in the advanced search would be best).

Frontend For KVM
Written by kaivalagi the 29 Feb 08 at 00:14. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
KVM is a great virtual machine solution which Ubuntu have already confirmed they are taking on board.

It would be nice if there was a easy to use gtk/qt frontend for it, to handle the following:

- creation of guest image files
- manage the compacting of image files
- provide an index of currently setup vm's
- configuration of indexed vm options to determine network support, memory size etc
- configuration of network bridging

Basically provide as much of the gui features available with VMWare and other vm applications.

Advanced Laptop Security
Written by dimkal the 28 Feb 08 at 18:55. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Laptops are stolen, you cannot do much about that, but you can improve its chances of being recovered with the advanced security/monitor system, a "lojack"-type system built on open source tools.

1. Most laptops are stolen by the person you know/seen. Most new laptops come with a camera, you can take advantage of the camera to take snapshots of the thief and upload it to some server.
2. take advantage of google geo location feature to see where the laptop is... need a guest account to convince the thief to connect the computer to the internet.
3. security feature should be off when you're using the computer (authorized login). And on when it is in the screen saver mode.

hope this idea picks up..

BRAINSTORM Statistics and Charts!
Written by virsli100 the 14 Mar 08 at 17:20. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
we should have a time view of our votes by showing graphical charts and lists for categories, tags, individual ideas and for ideas altogether.

And as for the lists e.g. clicking on the left panel like "Most popular this week" should show a list with NOT ONLY ALL the scores it has got so far but also scores for this week too! and so on for today, week, month, year, decade, century :)

Brainstorm: Next >> Previous

There should be an option in each idea page to get Next and Previous idea. This would help to go through ideas.

Add 'Latest Developer Response' category/feed to Brainstorm
Written by patprimate the 13 Jun 08 at 23:49. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Its great to read the developer responses to Brainstorm ideas and comments. It would be nice if we could get a 'latest developer response' section/feed so that we can easily check out the latest brainstorm ideas that have been commented on by developers.

Keep up your great work :D

Create application- brainstorm
Written by mangar the 4 Jun 08 at 00:12. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In addition of bundling all of the ideas by general, rough groups, how about focusing on certain applications, and by this way collecting usability / feature requests/ UI issues etc. from the community?

for example, The Gimp is running a UI brainstorm:

Propietary drivers should be loaded while using Live CD
Written by george9233 the 1 Jun 08 at 16:53. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If the proprietary drivers for graphic cards like nVidia and ATI are include in the Live CD and loaded while booting it, the live OS can boot into the maximum resolution available. In such way it will give a much better "first impression".

This idea is based on a recent review by OpenComputer.net:

Do not install Ekiga by default   forum
Written by olskar the 20 Jun 08 at 21:04. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I dont think Ekiga is used by many people, perhaps we should consider removing it from the cd in favour for other software or more drivers?

I made up a quickvote at the ubuntuforums to see if I was the only one not using Ekiga.

Check the thread posted here for information and discussion.

Even more control of workspaces
Written by s3a the 20 Apr 08 at 20:46. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There is a feature when you right click on a window, you can make it follow you on each workspace. This is a great idea, however, I think you should be able to have even more control for example; make it follow you in every workspace except one of your choice (lets say workspace 3).

In addition, you should have the ability to not have apps from other workspaces flashing in your current workspace. Like for example, when I try to avoid msn conversations in pidgin, I move workspaces, but when people respond, the conversations "follow" me. I should be able to put an end to this.

Having the pidgin tray icon blink should be enough to notify me. But to make it better, of course :P, it should have a little piece of text on the pidgin tray icon saying the name of the person who messages you in the other workspace. This applies for other programs too.

I've also seen some other idea(s) in this brainstorm site of someone suggesting that when you open an application in one workspace and switch workspace before the application is done loading, it opens in the workspace you are currently in. This is bad. You open an app in a specific workspace for a reason: for it to stay there..

I hope my ideas are pretty clear.

Call Totem Movie Player "Totem Movie Player" everywhere
Written by surfsunadam the 7 Sep 08 at 08:33. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
The default media player is called Totem Movie Player right? In the panel and the window heading it has this title, but in nautilus [when you right click for open-with] and the applications menu it is simply called 'Movie Player'.

It would be less confusing if the name was standardised across ubuntu

Support for typing in other languages easily
Written by plutoisaplanet the 2 Mar 08 at 20:45. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Everytime that I want to type something up in spanish, theres always some crazy hoops that i have to go through. Be it dead keys, or inserting a symbol every time i want a letter with an accent, it's all around pretty hard.

Windows had the alt + that made it really easy to do so. I think it would be really cool if Ubuntu had a way to type in stuff like that. I'm not sure exactly what the "official" name for this kind of thing is, but hopefully my idea makes sense.

Automate Mirror Seeking for Update Manager/Software Sources   forum
Written by diablo75 the 11 May 08 at 18:17. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm betting this has been something that's been a problem for many users for a while now: A user will go to run their Update Manager, but it fails to download all the files it needs due to some server being unavailable or overloaded. The best fix that I know, which I've repeated to newbies a few too many times lately, is to ask them to open their Software Sources and select a different server or to have it select one for them based upon ping time (which sometimes is not the best metric to measure by, especially for high latency connections like dial-up). I've gotten great pings in the past from servers that had very poor upload capability before...

Can't this whole process be automated somehow so the user doesn't have to ever worry about this? Can't update manager be made "smarter" so when it gets a 404 error, or FTP/HTTP server unavailable error or whatever when requesting a file, to try and download the same file from a mirror on the fly? Can't there be a centralized status server setup simply to monitor the workload status of the rest of the repository servers and act as an auto-redirect for update manager? I think it would make more sense if you expanded update manager so you can see the files as they're coming down, and watch one snag because a server isn't responsive, for it to perk up and say, "Download failed: Auto-attempting X mirror server. Success! Proceeding to next file."

If I were to rephrase this in one sentence, it would be, "Get rid of the Software Sources menu."

**If the computer tries a source of any type, and that source fails, it shouldn't come back with an error message that confuses the user. It should try any number of alternates automatically until it finds one that works.**

Add Brother Drivers
Written by meoblast001 the 8 Oct 08 at 00:59. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Brother has printer drivers available on their Linux page in Debian form (http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html). I recommend adding these Debian packages to the repos. Not all of them work flawlessly so not all of them should be added. I believe they are proprietary so I think they should be placed in the restricted repository. Either way, it's more drivers in the repos.
