Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time   forum
Written by Arioch the 28 Feb 08 at 15:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

Unmount resolution
Cannot unmount volume: show which application(s)

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

Upstream bug (GNOME #528559) has a patch in discussion. Volunteering to work on it.

Optional FULL patch to latest Ubuntu version
Written by ubee the 29 Feb 08 at 01:12. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've had problems installing version 7.10 on my system; however, 6 works just fine. It would be great if there were an easy option within the operating system to patch up to the latest Ubuntu version.

If there is a way... I'm not aware of it. If a windows user like me isn't aware of it, there's a good chance a lot of us are in the dark too.

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Network install

A bootable CD or USB to let you install Ubuntu over the Internet selecting the programs you need rather than the default install. What is needed can be installed more quickly.

Update: already exists https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/Netboot

An easy way to access a terminal.
Written by xiota the 29 Feb 08 at 00:34. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add a default shortcut or launcher in new accounts to run a terminal. I know new users want to avoid the terminal, but it's an rite of passage that all Linux users should eventually go through.

In practice, sometimes a command-line solution is preferable to a GUI solution. For example, when the choice is between copying and pasting a single command -vs- a lot of searching for the right buttons to click and still having to type some configuration details and possibly having the new configuration not persist across reboots.

There is Ctrl+Alt+F1, but I'd expect new users to be more scared of that than the gnome-terminal.

Simple out of the box interoperability with OS X/Mac
Written by Alex Escalante the 28 Feb 08 at 20:17. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Given the OS X/Mac raise in popularity, and considering OS X is just another Unix and Ubuntu is supposed to be an open system, there should be the possibility of connecting with Mac boxes easily and just by maybe "browsing the net" or something.

Seems to me that currently you have to install and configure several packages and then your luck may vary.

Kernel Module Support In Apt?
Written by kaivalagi the 29 Feb 08 at 00:08. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Integrate support for updating kernel modules into apt, to enable upgrading system support once kernel modules are well proven. It would mean not having to wait until the next full release before new support is available as standard, or having to download and compile drivers from manufacturers.

I am not sure how feasible this is, and whether there would be a heavy resource requirement to keep up-to-date? If it could be done it would certainly mean Linux would not be as much of a pain to get working with newer hardware. I think the current situation, with kernel modules and their hardware support being slow to catch up, may scare some less technical minded types away from a great OS.

Remove password delays, increase retry limit, email of failed attempts
Written by xiota the 29 Feb 08 at 00:54. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Password delays don't actually increase security. They just make password typos more annoying. New users (coming from other OSes) already think passwords are annoying. Annoying them further will encourage them to avoid Linux or to adopt lax security measures (such as auto-login or 'asdf' passwords).

Removing password delays may result in an increase of the number of incorrect password retries users make, so the limit should be increased to prevent users from locking themselves out of their accounts.

Users should also be sent an administrative email to notify them of failed attempts to access their account so they can decide whether they should change their password.
