Synaptic needs to be indexed
Written by fazillatheef the 23 Jul 08 at 11:41. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
After adding new repositories and clicking reload,Synaptic downloads lists from servers. And after that When I search for an application in synaptic it takes to much time to find me the package.Actually its looking into the list that was downloaded.

I think indexing the package name and description after reloading the package list can improve synaptic performance.

Written by orzoweitop the 12 Jun 08 at 10:33. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
GetDeb.net is a wonderful site for ubuntu users. Is a software page focus on ubuntu and also, other distro software. Include some programs that are not present in the repo and all programs are package in .deb files.

So, Why don“t include a link in ubuntu home or into ubuntu distro?

Replace old sound GUI with new one with Pulse Audio features in mind
No information about this blueprint

spec
Written by Yfrwlf the 7 Jun 08 at 04:27. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Pulse Audio is now in Hardy! The work is never over though and there are several remaining issues to be solved and enhancements to be made for 8.10. A new GUI is needed to replace the old one for audio control if the features of Pulse Audio are to be taken advantage of. It would be nice to see them accessible by default to raise the "coolness" factor as well as enhancing the usability of the current system. Currently, for example, there is no way to change Pulse Audio's default sound card through the existing GUI without installing extra packages, nor can you change ALSA's default sound card (you can only change the default for the sounds made in Gnome, but not for any other programs which use ALSA). These extra Pulse Audio controls should be merged with or replace the current system, or new ones should be made and merged with or replace the current system, or the current ones changed/enhanced. When other sound servers are selected, certain features could be grayed out if unavailable to keep everything sound system agnostic. This will also allow configuration of ALSA as well for those programs which still rely on it (and fix the above problem with ALSA as well).

Idea #2: There are still many programs that use ALSA, which is a remaining issue mentioned in the linked blueprint. If more programs were only made to be agnostic so that users can use whichever sound system they desire, that would be an ideal and much more permanent fix so that patching these programs later wouldn't be required. If some kind of standard is needed to help with this issue, the Ubuntu community could help take part in pushing for that standard "interface", and that would really help. It's sad when programs themselves have to be updated if a different sound server is desired, so it's a problem that should be fixed once and for all with a good, easy, standardized sound interface/language available for all programs to use if there isn't one in existence already. It's those kind of changes that will really make Ubuntu/Linux as a whole much more powerful and flexible and allow greater program adoption, competition, and use down the road. This, IMO, makes this idea more important than idea #1, or installing PA by default, or anything else on this subject, even though those are important too. :)

P.S., Brainstorm won't let me continue because it recognizes the Blueprint URL and won't allow an override, since this idea is a lot different. Overriding should be allowed, but for now I'm altering the URL.

Make gnome support transparency (rgba)
Written by gmeier the 3 Jun 08 at 07:12. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be very nice to see all gnome core apps support transparency.
I am of course not talking about completely transparent windows, that can be done with compiz already, but something like this:
http://cimi.netsons.org/blog/index.php?s=aiming
At least the existing patches should be included in ubuntu by default: http://www.cimitan.com/murrine/rgba-support/list
This would be very easy, but offer a lot of new theming options.

Make OpenOffice Sexy, port RedOffice   forum
Written by Liam McDermott the 3 Jun 08 at 01:23. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A fantastic front-end to OpenOffice has been developed. Currently it is only available for Windows, but will be ported to Linux shortly.

As this new front-end will be available under the GPL we should use it in Ubuntu (or see if upstream would be willing to include it).

OpenOffice is often accused of looking archaic, not only that but we need to catch up with the interface of Microsoft Office 2007. Something you might not notice at first glance are the new templates, they're far nicer than the ones OpenOffice ships with (shouldn't be difficult to remove the Chinese symbols if required).

Audacity 1.3.5
Written by MrTim the 22 May 08 at 11:29. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Audacity. Not an idea
Add audacity 1.3.5 (beta) to the repositories. 1.3.4 (beta) has an issue with invalid sample rates that virtually renders it useless, and this is apparently fixed in 1.3.5.

Update: A .deb file of Audacity 1.3.5 is now at getdeb, however I still, however, believe that the repositories should be updated with this version.

Small improvements to Compiz
Written by randall29 the 18 May 08 at 19:14. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently, Compiz is pretty efficient. Lightweight in memory, kind of fast and smooth, really tunable to suit your personnal needs.

But in my opinion, it lacks 2 small things to really shine:
Firstly, an easy way to switch on/off anti aliasing, for old computers can't trigger this on, but on my desktop machine, anti aliasing is off, and the cube or window deformations are sometimes really strange.

Second point, stop the tearing effect. For the moment, a really nasty tearing effect appears when you move a window horizontally, it's even more flagrant with Wobbly windows enabled.

I think these two small improvements could really help Compiz Fusion to become a top notch window manager.

Preload next photo in F-SPOT
Written by svergeylen the 18 May 08 at 13:24. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi,

I would like to precharge the next and previous photo in F-SPOT to avoid the blurred image.

At this moment, when you browse your photos woth the "next" button, it takes nearly one second to load completely the image.

It will be a really improve if F-SPOT could pre-load 1 (or more) images to avoid this delay.

Thanks

It's hard to catch the corners of the windows, in order to resize them.
Some gnome theme can also worsen this situation (when the borders are too thins).
For instance, in Fluxbox, when you are in the proximities of the corner, you can easily resize the window (you don't have to be exactly on that few pixels, but just near to them).
In Gnome you must be precisely in the position of the corner, and if you move the mouse of one micron, you lose the focus on the corner.

The tolerance around the corners, should be increased.

The same happens on the borders (left, right, top, bottom), but on the borders it's a bit easier, because you have to control direction only in one way, while on the corners you have to control your mouse movements up-down and left-right in conjunction.

Help to develop Gnome 3
Written by Matthias the 11 May 08 at 15:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome needs a revoultion. Ubuntu uses Gnome.
Canonical could help the Gnome3-developers e.g. with money, tips, pc-resources or something else to speed up the development and to create a better Gnome3-release.
(KDE4 has much more features than Gnome, it is faster and looks better (my oppinion). Also it uses the powerful Qt4 as widgetset that is better than GTK+ at time. Gnome is going to leave behind KDE)
[edit] I dont't say that any DE is better, but Gnome needs help and Ubuntu primary uses Gnome. KDE4 is a great DE without help from the Ubuntu developers. [/edit]
[Sorry for my English]

Implement Kinetic Scrolling
Written by rouge568 the 11 May 08 at 17:52. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Made popular by Apple, kinetic scrolling is a much more intuitive interface for navigating pages. Not only making touch-screens more interactive, the "real" feel of a kinetic scroll provides a more natural grasp of what is being done. It is easier to control and predict, and streamlines the work process. In addition, it's fun to look at. Ubuntu would benefit from this both through an asthetic boost and by providing an interface that is truly "for human beings".

Video of kinetic scrolling on an Open Moko: http://youtube.com/watch?v=k9eDkhHdNLI
Note: there would be an option to revert to the normal way.

* A new icon set which matches more closely the icon style of other mozilla applications
* Category colors are now shown next to an event box, giving users a much better overview of their differently categorized events
* Events with alarms now have a visual indicator showing an alarm bell
* A totally overhauled alarm dialog
* Sunbird now recognizes the timezone definitions in .ics files created by other applications. This fixes the longstanding issue of Sunbird miscalculating the date or time of events contained in those files
* The timezone guessing has been significantly improved
* Sunbird now contains experimental support for viewing remote calendars offline. This feature has known bugs and is included for testing purposes only
* Sunbird contains several performance fixes, which should improve working with larger calendar files
* You can now define for each of your calendars, whether you want to be notified of alarms for events in these calendars or not
* A full list of changes that have gone into this release can be found on The Rumbling Edge website

PulseAudio: Ability to mute everything except "allowed programs"
Written by sf_007 the 10 Apr 08 at 16:38. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to mute all programs, except the ones I allow to have sound, for example:
Mute everything except the media player, why? because websites sometimes have some crazy ads that scare the hell out of us, how annoying!
Disabling every potential "annoyer" is hard:
-Sounds can come from many browsers
-each browser can have many plugins
-even non-browser programs can have annoying sounds
-and even if we do disable all that, once the program is closed those settings disappear! (see idea 6752)

Would be sooo nice to be able to do this, it would give us so much peace of mind, knowing no program will produce sound, except our media player with our favorite tunes (for example)....

Provide explanation of "Done" items in Brainstorm
Written by doughy the 2 Apr 08 at 03:36. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Many times a brainstorm idea is marked as "Done" but I can't figure out where/how the idea was implemented. It would be extremely helpful if there was an explanation that addressed how the idea was implemented at the top of the page. For example.

"The idea has been implemented in the upcoming release of Ubuntu 8.10 in April. To use the new feature, click on System->Administration->New Feature."

Developer comments
This area, "developer comments", is where the explanations of the implemented ideas goes.

And as promised, we now separate the implemented ideas by release.

Mouse Wheel Acceleration
Written by comrade the 27 Mar 08 at 22:49. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Using a mouse wheel to scroll in Windows has always had acceleration, so the faster you move the wheel the more the scroll distance increases.

Mouse cursor movement uses (configurable) acceleration, so I can't understand why this feature is lacking in the wheel (admittedly as with all other distros to my knowledge)

I find this provides a much more responsive feel to using the scroll wheel in any application, especially in a web browser

The Avant-Window-Manager is now on the repositories, but it's extras applets are not. AWN is not too much useful without them.

to use them we must download the sources and compile.

Add an animated "What's New in 8.04?" slideshow to the installer.
Written by diablo75 the 25 Mar 08 at 03:04. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This seems pretty obvious. We need to have something that comes up that's lightweight (system resource wise) that will highlight the improvements of 8.04 over 7.10. Why not?
