Ubuntu currently doesn't upgrade the kernel, it just keeps adding newer and newer kernels to the system.

Currently, the list of kernels installed on a Ubuntu system grows over time. This takes up additional disk space and adds clutter to the boot loader.

Ideally, older kernels should be removed automatically.

Maybe leave current and current-1, but not _all_ of them...

Keyring manager should be disabled on Live CD

Right now, when joining a wireless network with the Live CD, the gnome keyring manager wants to store the credentials, and asks for a password.

This should be disabled by default on the Live CD. After all, it has little use there.

Before you say "this doesn't matter": Sensible default configurations are what make a system really distinctive in terms of usability and productivity.

Although not officially a standard, it has been common practice by most distributions that the /bin/sh link points to /bin/bash.

Ubuntu broke this common practice and links /bin/sh to dash.

This breaks A LOT of 3rd party apps, and causes A LOT of unneccessary trouble and support incidents.

If Ubuntu wants to promote dash, it should change all shell scripts to include a dash shebang. But it should NOT mess with the default /bin/sh link.

DON'T say "it's the script writer's fault when he uses /bin/sh and requires bash". We all know that. Nevertheless, a serious distro should not mess around with things that have become common practice even if wrongly so.

The end result of the current situation is that many things mysteriously work "everywhere but on Ubuntu".

Make YouTube work right out of the box
Written by probono the 24 Apr 08 at 16:26. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Without having to download, install, select anything. Make it just work right out of the box. Because your average joe isn't interested in the technical differences between gnash, libswfdec and flashplayer. He just wants his movie to play.

(Which works on both major other desktop OSes btw.)

By now, I have made several unintentional double-postings of comments because I had clicked the submit button twice (e.g., when using a weak wireless connection).

Please check for unintended double comment posts and prevent/delete them.

Integrate 32-bit and 64-bit versions into one, like Apple does
Written by probono the 1 Mar 08 at 20:16. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One thing less to worry about. The OS should just run 64-bit and 32-bit apps happily alongside each other, with only those apps being 64-bit that really profit from it.

apt-get enable multiverse
Written by probono the 24 Apr 08 at 16:22. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make it easy to enable multiverse/universe etc. from the command line without having to manually edit /etc/apt/sources.list

Have an easy-to-remember command like
"apt-get enable multiverse"
that changes souces.list accordingly and performs an apt-get update

Optional "fast shutdown/reboot" button
Written by probono the 1 Mar 08 at 21:02. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Should immediately shutdown/reboot without waiting any longer, basically like "sync && shutdown -f"

(This function could even be somewhat hidden by requiring something like ctrl-buttonclick)
