Add scanning feature to "Open File" dialog box
Written by josephcmiller2 the 29 Feb 08 at 19:24. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Ubuntu "Open File" dialog box is very nice and easy to use. I want to be able to scan a basic document or image from this dialog box. Add the basic dpi, crop, and size options and you'll have a killer easy scanning solution.

Implement network seamless handover
Written by kab the 29 Feb 08 at 19:11. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Users with notebooks are often connected to different kind of networks. Wifi, fast ethernet, GPRS/Edge, UMTS/HSDPA etc. At the moment you have to connect to every network manually and lose some network sessions. It would be nice if Ubuntu could develop some software who can do this.

I have seen a kind of implementation before, by a swiss telephone carrier called Swisscom. He call the future seamless handover (Seamlessly switch between Wifi, GPRS and fast ethernet, without a lose of the connection). I think it could be implemented by creating a virtual network adapter and connect all physical network adapter through a virtual pipe.

In the future, I think it would also be nice if you implement it with mobile IP, a IPv6 future, in mind.

more consistant keyboard short cuts
Written by twright the 29 Feb 08 at 16:59. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
every application should use f11 to fullscreen and Ctrl+C to copy, there are currently several (openoffice and gnome terminal come to mind). This would make everything easier to learn and use.

I love that Nautilus makes using files on FTP servers transparent, but it only works with FTP servers that allow passive mode. Can I have a setting, where I can choose to connect in active mode? Either a global default setting, an automagic detection, or a per server connection option would be fine by me.

Support for SD/MMC card readers
Written by TOB.CTAJIuH the 29 Feb 08 at 17:15. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For a lot of notebooks support for SD/MMC card readers seems to be insufficient. As these readers are based on TI or similar chipsets, theoretically the kernel must support them, but in fact Ubuntu does not recognise cards in many cases.

A simple way to make Infrared work
Written by tenchi39 the 29 Feb 08 at 16:08. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have a serial and a USB IR reciever, but couldn't make them work at all. The serial one worked in Slackware like five years ago when I used it. It would be so cool to use the universal remote to control watching videos and stuff like that...

Create a simple bandwidth monitor   forum
Written by rouge568 the 29 Feb 08 at 16:10. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Right now, at school, there is a limit (cap) on the weekly bandwidth that I can use. Unfortunately, the school does not provide bandwidth monitors, and there is no comprehensive program for linux. It would be nice if there was a program that monitored bandwidth (on all or some ports) and totaled it to provide daily/weekly/monthly totals. An alarm built into this to warn you when you approach a limit would be helpful.

Add feature to save installed packages in Synaptic and Adept
Written by k.y the 29 Feb 08 at 15:21. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A feature to save a list of all the installed packages would be nice. So if you reinstall the system, or upgrade or whatever you could just load that file and Synaptic or Adept install all the packages listed.
I think it's quite a pain to have to search for all the packages everytime I install Ubuntu. A copy of sources.list into that file would also be nice.

Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time   forum
Written by Arioch the 28 Feb 08 at 15:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Provide a simple graphical interface to manage _any_ type of network connection

At the moment it's possible to manage traditional wired and WiFi connections using Network Manager. To connect via a modem, a 3G/GPRS card, over bluetooth to a cell phone or via USB to another device requires that the user installs extra packages, and does a fair amount of configuration that isn't found in Network Manager.

A single unified tool should be provided which allows the user to connect to a network (or internet) via any supported method. It would also be useful to provide an extension to this tool to manage firewall rules and network connection sharing.

Configure default mount permissions for removable drives
Written by cudjoe the 29 Feb 08 at 13:20. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
By default, removable drives are mounted with permissions to current user only (700,rwx------).

This can be very annoying if you want to share a folder on a removable drive with Samba, because it won't have permissions to read and share the folder's content.

Currently, you need Administator permissions to change the device's permissions, and it's not obvious for everybody.

I suggest an option in the removable devices config panel.

Force mount button when usb has been unmounted improperly
Written by cornbread the 29 Feb 08 at 03:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I get a message all the time when a buddy hands me his usb stick after not unmounting properly in windows. says I have to type in the terminal to force mount.

Why not add a force mount button that just gives a warning about it being unmounted improperly?

One-Click Complete Theme Change

As much as Ubuntu gains in uniqueness from its default color scheme, the theme is not necessarily going to be liked by everybody. I, for one, do not particularly care for it.

Since the default theme is not likely to be changed (more specifically, the "Human" color scheme), why not make an easy way for the user to optionally change it after installation? Of course, it is possible to do this now, but it takes a significant amount of knowledge and time to manually modify:

-GNOME theme
-GNOME wallpaper
-GNOME icon set
-GNOME splash
-GDM theme
-Boot splash (Usplash)
-GRUB theme
-etc.

There should be an option to click ONE button and have all of these things change to another theme/color scheme. Furthermore, Ubuntu should include at least one built-in alternative theme to Human (to maximize the potential of the one-click theme switcher idea).

If Ubuntu truly wants to be the "Linux for Human Beings," it needs to maximize the ability for the user to choose his or her own options. Creating a facade of earth-tones and calling it "Human" is a bit questionable and misleading. Rather, it is this one point--the ability to make choices--that is the quintessential characteristic of being Human.

Simple message saying usb unit is ready to extract
Written by ladaja the 29 Feb 08 at 13:10. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The idea is very simple. A small message saying that the usb drive is ready to extract after you unmount the unit to extract it. It is only to be sure about the device is ready to be extracted.
Thanks.
