Boot into screensaver
Written by kayhayen the 29 Feb 08 at 19:22. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
My use case is that I tend to turn on the computer and want it to be readily available when I come back a few minutes or some hours later. I also don't want my small kids to play with the mouse and create havoc to my system.

When the machine boots into kdm (or gdm, wouldn't make a difference), I still have to login to the desktop after turning the machine on.

That is because there is no way to boot into KDE (or Gnome, wouldn't make a difference) and have the screensaver to be started and lock immediately and in any case, even if there is user intervention.

That's a refinement of automatic login I think. It's an improvement of automatic login in security sense, in as so far, as the password will be needed again. The benefit will be that once I enter the password to the screen, the desktop session will already be fully loaded.

In my case with Digikam running with some thousands of photos and quite a few other programs, sesssion restore takes quite a while. Also, while kdm (or gdm) may look pretty, I even more like to run the slide slow screensaver with images of my family.

Work with Humanized to bring Enso to GNU/Linux faster   forum
Written by bescritt the 29 Feb 08 at 18:48. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
"Having to change programs to perform simple tasks—for example, making a quick calculation, or looking up a definition—breaks your concentration, takes you away from the task at hand, and wastes your valuable time. Enso lets you do common computing tasks easier and faster than ever before. You get a huge productivity boost and a simpler digital life."
http://www.humanized.com/
On my accounts at school, and on my music server I rely on Enso to help me do things quickly. Also, a mouseless machine is much easier to use with Enso's help.

Track current position in brainstorm list
Written by JimJinkins the 29 Feb 08 at 18:54. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I want to scroll the the brainstorm list, marking items up or down. When I mark an item, I want my current position in the list to remain unchanged, so I can consider and possibly change the next item, and the next, ....

Having to start over at the top of page one, no matter what page order is used, is a powerful negative motivator.

Also, consider adding tag lists to the interface, so we users can develop better categorization.

Adaptive Inactivation of Services
Written by alperyilmaz the 29 Feb 08 at 18:59. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Is it possible stop services (automatically by system) based on usage characteristics? I mean, I don't use pccard slot so pccardd(eamon) should not be starting as a service given the fact that I didn't use it for a long time.

Next step might be adaptive activation of services. Let's say I disabled bluetooth a while ago. But now I start using it. Before I change the configuration file, the bluetooth service can be added to list of services to be activated during boot.

Fixing the install on computers problem
Written by kcredden the 29 Feb 08 at 18:59. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Here's an idea: How about fixing it so you can accually install Ubuntu on computers? I've tried to install Ubuntu on 5 different computers in 3 years. Not ONE has installed correctly. These are problems that stop the installiation, not ones that come about after the OS is installed.

I use Debian 4 almost exclusively and every one of those mentioned computers run Debian with very little problems.

Allow tagging of files using ext3's extended attributes
Written by cr4a the 29 Feb 08 at 19:00. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
ext3 allows you to add extended attributes to any file. Why not let us use this for tags in Nautilus? We could be warned that moving the file between systems would destroy the tags, or be given an option of saving them to a file to be imported back later. Then we could search our system by tag and have something very close to a database file system.

Integrate openclipart.org into OO
Written by cr4a the 29 Feb 08 at 19:02. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
OpenOffice doesn't have a very good integrated clipart repository. How about integrating something like openclipart.org or some other Creative Commons licensed art or icon library?

Put a size limit on Trash
Written by cr4a the 29 Feb 08 at 19:03. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Put a size limit on Trash, so it gets emptied automatically after it gets above 1GB (or whatever). You could also empty it on a time schedule, or automatically delete files over a certain age.

GRUB (or LILO) choice at install
Written by gtarider the 29 Feb 08 at 19:04. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to have the choice at install time whether I want to use GRUB or LILO and especially where I want to install the loader. Currently, GRUB is default AND the loader will be put at the MBR by default. Therefor, I need the alternate CD but this is NOT for noobs. Please give a user the choise. I know that Knoppix and Kanotix works this way.

Professional look
Written by miketech the 29 Feb 08 at 19:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is a great system but without any professional look. The brown look is not the point. The point are the icons. They all are very comic-like. We don't need a distribution for kids, we need a distribution for business and office. Take a look at windows or mac osx. They have a professional looking icon set, professional colors. It's not that funny looking comic-like style. I guess for success of ubuntu in businesses a more stylish look is very important. No professional enterprise wants to show funny desktops. And no: OpenSuSE or Fedora are not much better. This is a general problem in the linux community.

Rhythmbox: Ability to browse library without it being selected to be the next tr
Written by edm1 the 29 Feb 08 at 16:49. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is slightly difficult to explain. So I double click a song to play, after the song has finished Rhythmbox should go on to play the next song in the album. However, if you're exploring the your library using either the Artist/Album browser or search function Rhythmbox will play whatever you are currently viewing once the song has finished. It should not do this!

Suggest the best options on install
Written by pickture the 29 Feb 08 at 16:50. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Label the best or simplest default options when installing Ubuntu.

"If you're not sure what this means, choose this option."

Because not everybody knows what a partition is, etc.

Straight from the Terminal
Written by grupotux the 29 Feb 08 at 16:54. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Typical application menus lack the equivalent of the old unix -t option of the ls command, which means: list files in inverse order of creation by date, that is, last comes first, a very useful thing to have for those of us who fail to conceal how long ago we joined the bus.

In kind, it would be good to see the Files tab work properly when seeking to list a given file type, e.g., .ps, .pdf, etc., and not everything in the directory.

Both together would be a blessing, to newcomers especially.

Bug&CrashManager
Written by apogee the 29 Feb 08 at 17:00. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I am not always online when an app crashes, so the crash report is lost. Ditto with when I locate a bug that I want to report. An app to manage and explore the history of crashes and bug reports on my local machine would be fantastic.

I would also like the explorer to group the reports by history of crashed apps, nature of crash, type of bug, frequency of crash, etc.

Sync the un-submitted crashes and bug reports to respective vendors when next I am online. And check for responses to bugs, download and view later.

I have a lot of nice service menus created by me for image manipulation, video encoding/cutting and stuff like that.

I service menus will stay important in kde4, there should be an online collection for them...
