Transparency in all future Ubuntu Wallpaper (abstract or non-photographic)
Written by Darin the 7 Sep 08 at 08:20. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Gnome 2.24 is shipping with some very nice abstract wallpapers - and they all support transparency. Since the wallpaper background is transparent, the wallpaper simply overlays the background with the colors or gradient that you choose in the Appearance Preferences. Because of this, you can change the color or gradient to come up with a virtually endless amount of customizable backgrounds with only a single wallpaper.

The background used in Hardy Heron uses a built-in gradient that can't be changed. It is a radial gradient, which is nice, but I think it would be worth setting a default vertical gradient through background colors instead of building it into the wallpaper itself. It would allow users to easily change the look and color, without changing the default wallpaper.

I could not find an SVG of the final Hardy wallpaper, but I did find a pre-final SVG to use as an example.

Prevent duplicating certain programs when one is already open
Written by surfsunadam the 7 Sep 08 at 08:26. Category: Usability. Related to: Evolution Mail and Calendar. New
If I click on evolution in the panel and I have evolution already open, the program loads from scratch and I end up with two evolution windows open. When I click on evolution again, it should focus on my existing evolution window, there's no need for two to ever be open.
Same goes for pidgin.
Rythmbox already has this feature.

However, for other apps like firefox, it is useful to be able to open multiple windows, so it should be left the way it is.

Call Totem Movie Player "Totem Movie Player" everywhere
Written by surfsunadam the 7 Sep 08 at 08:33. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
The default media player is called Totem Movie Player right? In the panel and the window heading it has this title, but in nautilus [when you right click for open-with] and the applications menu it is simply called 'Movie Player'.

It would be less confusing if the name was standardised across ubuntu

Currently, the rt73 wireless driver is the best way in Ubuntu to get your Ralink RT73 card work. But it isn't supported by Network Manager, it doesn't show avaible networks, while Serialmonkey's own network manager tool (RutilT) works perfectly.

screen resolutions grouped into proportions
Written by nitrofurano the 6 Sep 08 at 17:39. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
it's a bit annoying the available screen resolutions appearing as complete mess: 4x3, 5x4, 8x5, 5x3 and 16x9, all mixed, and providing us sickful experiences about weird aspect ratios...

The screen resolutions could be grouped as:
. 5x4:
640x512
1280x1024
. 4x3:
640x480
1280x960
. 8x5:
800x500
1280x800
. 5x3:
800x480
1024x600
. 16x9:
800x450
1600x900

or:
. 1280x
800 (8x5)
960 (4x3)
1024 (5x4)

Handler for ICC profiles
Written by Eldmannen the 6 Sep 08 at 18:58. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I double-click on a ICC profile (.icc or .icm file) it says; "There is no application installed for this file type".

ICC profiles are for color calibration to get accurate natural colors.

It should ask me "Do you wish to activate this ICC profile?" this would make it much easier to use, install and setup.

Font preview
Written by Eldmannen the 6 Sep 08 at 18:49. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I double-click on a .ttf (font file) it says "There is no application installed for this file type".

It should give me a quick preview of the font which displays all letters and numbers in different sizes. E.g the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog".

And offer me an easy way to install the fonts.

This would make Ubuntu more attractive. Especially to professional users such as publishers, designers and artists.

Admin rights granted in notification area
Written by biomega the 31 Aug 08 at 20:26. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm studying for the RHCE exam, so I use Red Hat besides of Ubuntu, Something that I love from Red Hat is that every time you use a Administrative tool and you get authorization to use it a icon appears in the notification area, it leaves after some time or you can just give a right click and select "forget this authorization".

It would be nice have the same in Ubuntu with gksu and that stuff

Make Ubuntu sticker to put over top of the Windows/Apple key on keyboards.
Written by travis the 2 Mar 08 at 16:16. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
People who switched would not be made to feel guilty or dirty about using that key. They could be made and sold very cheaply and increase evangelism.

Also, that key should be supported by default:

make codecs for mid files
Written by slsolaris the 6 Sep 08 at 03:29. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
actually mid files cant be played in totem nor any other music players, i have to use timidity to do that, i know what you must be thinking: "you have timidity, what are you asking for", the problem is that timidity is console, and a graphical interface to do this is neede, so we need codecs for this, maybe gstreamer need to add this codec to its pack.

Stop asking for wireless password when it is already known
Written by nazgand the 7 May 08 at 21:30. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
While doing important things that require no interruption, such as playing my heavily modified and challenging version of ketm, it can pop up, taking the keyboard focus off of the game - which is a quite annoying thing.

Specify Reference Systems
Written by raywood the 3 Sep 08 at 03:54. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A lot of people would like to know what's the best video card or audio card or whatever for Ubuntu. Of course, Ubuntu is supposed to work well with many different pieces of hardware. But sometimes it doesn't. Hardy x64 NVIDIA video has proved to be a case in point for me.

Right now, I just want to know what I need to buy in order to make it work, and I'm not finding that. Theory aside, I would like to know the hardware configurations that have been used extensively, with a variety of programs.

JavaScript interpreter
Written by Eldmannen the 3 Sep 08 at 21:12. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make a JavaScript command-line interface interpreter that you can invoke via a shell script.

#!/usr/bin/javascript

Then you can use JavaScript (which is becoming increasingly popular) in shell scripts.

Make LiveCD a RescueCD / Hacer del LiveCD un CD de rescate
Written by angel.ramirez.isea the 5 Sep 08 at 17:47. Category: Marketing. Related to: Live CD. New
(See below for an English translation)

[English]
When he was young, my father used to work selling and servicing Caterpillar heavy machinery. Once, they went to a farm to demonstrate a back hoe, and it got stuck in the mud. Coincidentially, a John Deer sales team was in a nearby farm demonstrating a simmilar back hoe. They inmediatelly took it to the first farm and “rescued” the Caterpillar back hoe from the mud. Guess who made two sales that same day.

My proposal is to include in the LiveCD tools such as testdisk, ntfsprogs, clamav and others, that would allow an advanced user to recover data or whole Windoze systems. Generally, after my “customers” experience the power of GNU/Linux, they decide to give it a try.

Big mouse cursor and tooltips: make them usable together!
Written by cosurgi the 5 Sep 08 at 00:13. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
All big mouse cursor themes are currently completely useless because they obscure all tooltips. Sometimes partially (only first few letters) sometimes fully.

This simple idea is to make tooltips position configurable (or automatically configured) depending on the mouse cursor theme.

It is a wrong assumption of all tooltips that mouse cursor has 16x16 size. With ever growing monitor resolution even the 64x64 mouse cursor size soon will not be enough.
