Help develop free nvidia software driver

I usually don't care wether or not the software on my computer is open-source or not, and the nvidia driver works great for me. However, it is giving lots of problems for other people, including slow 2d performance. Also, xorg.conf will no longer exist in about a year or so, and users who use the nvidia driver would still need it. This may lead to problems with keyboard layouts and the like, since the nvidia binary driver creates a xorg.conf with default options.
In addition, shipping ubuntu without 3d support, as is done now, might give a lot of users the impression that the OS isn't as user friendly as it says on the website (while in fact it is), as you have to install a driver even to get simple desktop effects to work.
Since there is already open-source 3d support for radeon chips, I would recommend the ubuntu developers to help out the nouveau nvidia driver project. I think it would make a lot of difference if there would be fast, stable opensource 3d support for nvidia video cards, by default, and it might help to avoid the problems described above.

Linux should develop the platform for device drivers, not drivers itself

Ubuntu and all other Linux distributions tries to implement drivers at kernel level or something like that...
Why linux volunteers write driver ?
Linux should prepare only platform for device driver, not write driver code itself...
after the driver platform, any volunteer may develop driver, but DEVICE VENDORS SHOULD BE encouraged and helped to write drivers for Linux using that driver platform...

Have a usable machine with 256MB of RAM

While it is common for modern machines to have at least a GiB of memory, older machines (2-3 years old) are (or IMO should be) a major target audience for Ubuntu.
Unfortunately, having 256MB of memory makes the machine almost entirely unusable for more than one task at a time.
Even the "minimalist" xubuntu is barely usable with this amount of memory.
I think Ubuntu should do some work on reducing memory usage to this level, at least for the xubuntu variant.

shop.canonical.com should sell computers

When is still so hard to find on sale hardware with Ubuntu OEM (specially in Europe), would be awesome shop.canonical.com selling hardware (desktop, notebooks and netbooks) with Ubuntu OEM - this would help to increase the popularity of the Ubuntu OEM, and provide an interesting chain reaction on all hardware manufacturers, i hope.
Everex also put on sale recently a desktop computer cheaper than a Windows Vista licence, which i considered a very interesting marketing idea (it seems to had a strong success on places like WalMart, for example). The site shop.canonical.com could bet on this as well.

Install GThumb by defualt

It would be great if there would be an image viewer included in Ubuntu wich has some simple and quick image editing options like KDE's Gwenview. I'm thinking about little features like crop/resize/rotate/mirror/flip and maybe adjusting contrast/brightness and being able to save it to the file. A perfect solution for this is GThumb.
I'm not talking about making GThumb the default image editor, I'm only talking about including it, so if people want to adjust there image a bit, they can choose to open GThumb by right-clicking on their image.
I know GIMP can do these things, but GIMP is a very advanced application. It would a lot easier to just open the item and to be able to quickly edit a small thing to your file.
I think this is only a good idea if it fits on the 700MB CD. That's our first priority.

Clean up brainstorm by doing the following:
1. Remove ideas that is marked "Not an idea" or alternatively create a certain category where they could be moved
2. "Hide" ideas that carries a vote count under a certain limit, for example -10 and let the user decide whether to show these ideas
3. Automatically merge all duplicates (not only the votes but the idea itself as well). This could be done by providing both descriptions under the same title.
4. Move inapplicable ideas to a certain category or alternatively remove them

Using the "about me" tool, it is possible to set a user-pictue for the user that is logged in. I think Ubuntu should set a random picture from one of the pre-created ones by default. This picture should then be displayed on the login-window by default. This is an easy thing to do and creates a more professional feeling of the login window.

Remove Xubuntu as obsoleted

According to my tests Xubuntu is now slower than Ubuntu. In the newest version(gutsy and hardy) Gnome has reached the lightness of Xfce and it's now even faster. In the addition it's very hard to do things with Xubuntu.
No one should use Xubuntu anymore. It's old, it's not good. Xubuntu should be removed from the official Ubuntu variations as obsoleted.

1) A customizable installation (with checkboxes o something similar) you will be able to choose what packages do you want. You will can select or unselect the programs that ubuntu install as a default, if you dont need an email client you will can unselect it...
2) Integrate in 1 DVD unbuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu... you need only select what desktop do you want and what packages (see nÂș1)
"Ubuntu should be available as a live/install DVD that comes with Gnome, KDE, Xfce, and perhaps other desktop environments. Ideally, it would have equal priority to the CDs that only come with one, which would include being released at the same times. When booting from the disk, users should have an option of which environment to use. When installing, users should be able to chose which environments to install, and have options for installing additional packages designed for those environments (like the gnome and kde packages).
This would allow multiple people who prefer different environments to use the same installation disk. It would be more convenient for people who want to have e.g. both KDE and Gnome. It would make it easier for people new to Linux to learn which environment they prefer. It would make it easier for lesser used environments to gain new users. It would put all supported desktop environments on a more equal ground, rather than sanctioning one as the only "real" and "official" desktop environment for Ubuntu."

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.
Thank you for reading.

Download and install additional packages from the internet when installing

Already implemented

If you install Ubuntu in another language the installation program automatically connects to the internet in order to download and install the language packages required. Wouldn't it be possible to do the same thing with say mp3 support and nvidia/ati drivers if the user selects those (and maby other things) for installation. The packages wouldn't be "included" in unutu in the ordinary way but they would be easier to install than what is the case now with the restricted drivers manager.
Please correct me if there is some issues with this

Small improvements to Compiz

Currently, Compiz is pretty efficient. Lightweight in memory, kind of fast and smooth, really tunable to suit your personnal needs.
But in my opinion, it lacks 2 small things to really shine:
Firstly, an easy way to switch on/off anti aliasing, for old computers can't trigger this on, but on my desktop machine, anti aliasing is off, and the cube or window deformations are sometimes really strange.
Second point, stop the tearing effect. For the moment, a really nasty tearing effect appears when you move a window horizontally, it's even more flagrant with Wobbly windows enabled.
I think these two small improvements could really help Compiz Fusion to become a top notch window manager.

In order to improve the out of the box-experience of ubuntu I think ubuntu should start collect user statistics. Example of data that could be collected includes:
how the user configures the menu bars in gnome (ie och many and where they are located etc)
which applications the user chooses to have on the menu bars
which items the user wants to appear on the gnome menu
+more that I cant think of now...
the user would have to be informed that this data is collected and would be able to turn the feature of

Sometimes when I click the little notification icon for update manager it takes a while for the app to launch. Not sure whether I actually clicked the icon I click it again. This usually leads to that I have something like 2 - 3 instances of the update manager running.
It would be better if ubuntu didn't allow multiple instances of the update manager and other apps where there is absolutely no need to have more than one window open. The same goes for add/remove and others...

One thing that annoys me when using ubuntu is how slow the firefox browser is to boot up! To put it in comparision to windows where the browser (at least version 3) boots up quite fast i think this is a point where ubuntu really could improve. Don't know if it is in the ubuntu or firefox code the problem lies but it would be nice if something could be done about this!
