Make and Order your own Ubuntu

Hello Friends!
Ubuntu has come a long way and can now be called the undisputed king of HOME LINUX. Lets go a step further and make ubuntu more desirable and irresistible.
Ubuntu can be made customer specific or to be more precise 'It should be customized as per the requirements of the user'.
Like some of us feel that instead of movie player, we can have VLC player as a default player. Some feel WINE should be pre-installed and while some feel Ubuntu should not have open office and ekiga by default and so on.....
I suggest that the company promoting Ubuntu should have a plan wherein users can demand for their customized ubuntu and demand for the features they want as default.
This will make Ubuntu more user specific and may increase its popularity.
For providing this, the company must charge the users a price. This will increase their revenue too.

Brainstorm needs a 'Question of the Week' -style poll.

Each week Brainstorm should feature a question that is on the minds of the developers and leaders of the Ubuntu project. I'm thinking, questions like:
* In your opinion, what is the 'weakest link' in Hardy Heron or Ibex (Alpha)?
* Which of the following areas would you like to see Ubuntu excel in .... a) b) c) ?
* How can we make the release of Ibex go smoother and generate more excitement than Hardy's release?
Apart from being good conversation starters, these questions can give the Ubuntu developers a platform to publicly address issues and concerns that matter to them, while also providing inspiration for other relevant brainstorm ideas.

Try to create a common set of linux desktop standards

Try to create a common set of linux desktop standards similar to the internet RFC's.
We all basically use one kernel and one lamp web platform.
Why not a common desktop platform ?
There is such a thing as too much choice and a desperate lack of standards.
How about we ask the leaders of Gnome/Gtk, KDE/Qt and Xfce together with the leaders of the top 20 distro's on distrowatch to convene in a hotel somewhere until they produce the "linux desktop manifesto". Give them all they need to sustain themselves and all the tools needed to work with. Then hand over the manifesto to the linux foundation for safekeeping and promotion.
See: http://www.freedesktop.org
You may flame now... ;-)

Develop a really BIG game and provide its SDK

Some platforms have become popular just because they have had a number one game (developed only for that platform) that has attracted a lot of attention.
While there are interesting Ubuntu games, none of them seems to be too popular outside of Linux world. It could be really interesting to develop a top quality game as a marketing strategy to get more (and free) attention worldwide.
This game should include some kind of editor and multiplayer options, in order to foster a global community that would indirectly draw attention to Ubuntu.
This could be also a starting point to develop more games specially focused on the Ubuntu platform. In order to encourage this, it would be necessary to provide the SDK used to create this popular game. Casual gamers would be attracted by the appeal of just the game, and game developers would be attracted by the chance of creating something good with the solid base provided by the SDK. Both would help extend the deployment of Ubuntu.

Sources for this idea:
I got idea from reading posts on one of my other ideas:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8379/
Plus it's almost a "dupe" of this idea: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5597/
this "idea" was inspired also by this:
http://autopackage.org/faq.html?PHPSESSID=9a5808cd60ee8270aa40a91fdbd77040#1_1
under improving Linux.
(If you thin i'm copy cat that's stealing ideas from others, yes you can vote me down)
Other similar sites / ideas / projects:
http://www.freedesktop.org
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/LSB
------------------------------------------------------------
Even though similar idea was already posted and voted mostly negative (-18 votes). I still think this is good idea, this could really mean the next step in Linux development.
----
Yes I know, that you "hardcore" Linux / Unix fans value your freedom over everything. And I respect that, it's just the problem, what you can do with this freedom if it's the only thing that works right? I as an recent Linux convert from Windows am willing to sacrifice a bit of this freedom in exchange for functionality.
The ability to choose different desktops (KDE, GNOME, XFce...) is one of best in Linux. So the question is how to make enough of common platform, that developers could make programs and installer so it could work without any bigger problems on all of the distros out there.

remove the "stretch icon" option from right-click-menu of mounted volumens
That gotta be the most useless option in Gnome..
No, seriously! The more crap the menu contains, the harder it will be to find the stuff that matters.
Before you vote it down, tell me, when would you ever use that function? Be honest!

Disassociate Ubuntu from "Linux pride"

"Linux pride" in the title is meant in the similar way as "white pride".
I don't mean it in the way: "I'm proud to use Linux"
I mean it in the way: "Linux is from geeks for geeks" or something like that...
--------------
A lot of Linux users think they are better then all other OS users. And some of them even want to secure their "geek" position by demanding ubuntu shouldn't be easy for first time users. I think this is against the Ubuntu philosophy "towards humanity" and "Linux for human beings".
So all of you who are voting ideas down, because they want to make Ubuntu easier for first time users, please don't.
I'm not trying to troll or starting a flamewar, I'm trying to give constructive critics.
This dosen't mean make Ubuntu like MAC OS or god forbid Vista,
it just means make ubutnu the most user friendly Linux, that goes for all of other flavours of ubuntu to.
---------------------------------------------
The fame of Linux pride, "linux is for G33ks go back to Windoze if you don't like it N00b" is what is keeping a large portion of users that want to change their OS.
So let us all promote Ubuntu as new user fiendly OS, and think about ideas how to make it even more friendler as it already is

It would be a great improvement if I could select files from the 'ls' list with the mouse and simply drag them to the Desktop or to another terminal (which would copy these files to the Desktop or to the current directory of the other terminal, resp.)

Online Ubuntu Services
|
|
Written by jander99 the 5 Apr 08 at 01:33. Category: System.

New

Overview:
Provide the following services to Ubuntu users via a SSO method such as OpenID:
Hardware Submission
Configuration Settings per application
Bookmarks (Firefox, Konqueror, Epiphany, etc)
Bug Submissions
Brainstorm Ideas
Details:
Implement a web frontend (i.e. online.ubuntu.com) Ubuntu users can login to. This website will be able to store the user's computer profile(s).
A computer profile should consist of the hardware (using an application like Fedora's Smolt, or hwdb) including proprietary drivers, Ubuntu version (Kubuntu 7.10, Ubuntu 8.04, etc), and common software settings (Firefox, Pidgin, Mythtv, etc). Software settings could consist of Bookmarks, Settings, Plugins used, preferred background wallpaper, etc.
The website should also store and link any Bug Reports the user submits via the Apport utility. This should be linked to the hardware profile and user. Crash logs, kernel settings, core dumps, backtraces, etc should be stored here as well for proper linking to the bug report. If possible, bug resolution should be linked back to the user's bug report so they can see if their submission has been fixed. The frontend for the user should follow the same guidelines as Launchpad currently does by suggesting other bugs that have already been submitted, to cut down on clutter and duplicates.
The website should also link to Brainstorm and other Ubuntu sites that the user belongs to.
The use of OpenID and/or an Ubuntu Single Sign On service for all services would be an added benefit. Users would no longer need separate accounts for Brainstorm (QA), Forums, and Launchpad.
Finally, a graphical application should ship with all flavors of Ubuntu that integrates jockey, apport, hwdb (or Smolt, etc) and any other gui frontends already in use to facilitate easy submission to the website. This application should allow the selection and synchronization of software settings and hardware profiles (in the case of an upgrade, etc) manually by the user, or allow the user to automatically set synchronization settings per application.

Rename top level directory names

Although this was copied from what is probably an april's fool joke, it directly made sense to me. The current directory structure is very confusing to new users and the one proposed below immediately makes sense to anyone:
/bin /system/executables
/boot /system/boot
/dev /system/devices
/etc /system/config
/lib /system/libraries
/home /users
/media /storage
/mnt /storage
/proc /system/processes
/root /users/Administrator
/sbin /system/executables/admin
/tmp /system/temporary
/usr /system/applications
(idea taken from http://blog.drinsama.de/erich/en/linux/debian/2008040101-renaming-directories.h tml)

I'd like to see videos linked to in the help system. Not everyone has great reading comprehension. It annoys me when I write a detailed howto and people can't follow it, but people have different learning styles.
I'd like to see an RSS feed in the help system which shows categories of HowTo videos hosted at Ubuntu.com. Because it's a feed, new videos coming on line would be available to people who installed before the video was available.

Please increase the number of idea categories on this site. I am not a programmer, but would like to discuss ideas related to Ubuntu's distribution plans, marketing, business models, about this site and other such things. At the moment there are no such categories.
It might be nice to list the categories in the left hand menus too, for easy access.

I hate to say it but Dell's Ideastorm is better than Brainstorm. Ideastorm provides statistics, a far wider range of categories, more options to organize ideas and comments and is better at promoting cooperation and communication between users. Ideastorm also has html enabled so you can add pics and things....
