Hardware Testing tools enchantments (8.04)
Written by Lex the 28 Mar 08 at 22:33. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Release 8.04 (hardy) contains tools for checking and reporting hardware compatibility (System Tools → Hardware Testing).

This is good start. Thanks for it! However I am missing few important questions. Many people are begging for suspend/hibernate support and sound recording fixes. Following questions will help to determine problematic hardware.

Is suspend mode working?
Is hibernate working?
Is sound recording working?

Very very easy way to share files over the internet: Tubes
Written by zoubidoo the 28 Mar 08 at 22:05. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Imagine a folder on your desktop, when you drop a file in it, the file is transmitted to your friend anywhere on the internet. Transfer is asynchronous so if the person is away, then it's postponed until the next time they are online.

The folders are called "Tubes"

Tubes can also be more sophisticated to allow multiple people to be on the receiving end.

The idea is already implemented on Windows
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubes_%28software%29
I like the name Tubes and hope it is not trademarked. Actually, I thought of the idea and name before them from pneumatic tubes which I think are a brilliant invention!

it's so awesome. :] I think it should at the very least be in repos, but I think it'd be awesome if we could include it as an default option in the Appearance dialog.

Applications should automatically unmount devices when needed
Written by d1s4st3r the 29 Mar 08 at 09:04. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Recently I needed to erase a DVD-RW to copy a new .ISO image on it. When I put the DVD into the writer, Ubuntu automatically mounted it on a certain mount point (this because that DVD wasn't blank but containing some data).
When I opened GnomeBaker and tried to erase it, GnomeBaker crashed because the resource (the DVD) was busy (or mounted).

Just as a CD burning program can't write on a mounted CD, other programs like partitioning ones can't work on mounted partitions.

So, I think some applications (like GnomeBaker) may have the possibility to automatically unmount devices without asking user interaction in case they need to operate on them.

Improve Totem's Design and Versatility
Written by ubunteando the 29 Mar 08 at 13:20. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Totem's design really sucks... The icon, the image showing when nothing's playing, not being able to minimize to tray...

I think totem (or an alternative) should become a simple resource-cheap do-it-all alternative to WMP in Windows (is not the best for anything, but it can do most of things)

At least when it comes to music, video, streaming... Looking nice, mini-player, integration with brasero and cd-ripping soft included in ubuntu...

Give a discription as to what a terminal is.
Written by Cheesecake the 29 Mar 08 at 11:05. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you press ctrl alt f1 ect you get a terminal indepenant of X and is wonderfull if you know what your doing, but say my mum accadentally presses ctrl alt f1. Not knowing really what she is doing or the cat lands on the keyboard and puts it into a terminal. She would think the computer is broken and be very confused on how to fix it I think we should put a discription as to what it is and how to get back to X

Create a "How Can I Help?" site
Written by webhamster the 29 Mar 08 at 08:54. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think, a lot of people like to help with ubuntu development, but they don't know where to start. This includes not only programmers but also designers, music composers or just the normal ubuntu user.

So how about creating a website "howcanihelp.ubuntu.com" where everyone (except for C/C++ programmers ;-) ) can find out how to contribute?

Examples:
PHP Programmer -> help with Brainstorm Development, someproject.ubuntu.com needs a new Website, ...
Music Composer -> (don't know where this should link)
Graphic Artist -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork
Foreign Language Native Speaker -> Translate Subtitles at screencasts.ubuntu.com,...
Beginner Ubuntu User -> (don't know if we find something for them :-) )
Advanced Ubuntu User -> Help people at IRC #ubuntu, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WikiToDo, join the Documentation Team...
Marketing Expert -> ...

and so on!

Add 'Do not Update This' option to Update Manager
Written by mridkash the 29 Mar 08 at 16:58. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This issue is something I face regularly and thats why I'm posting it here.

I want a right click option on the updates in Update Manager which allows me to lock the version of a software and not update it. I know this functionality exists somewhere in Synaptic Package Manager, but still it would be convenient.

Example:
I have nvidia card on desktop and there was an intel video driver update recently, so it came up in Update Manager. I didn't want to install it obviously, so I unchecked it. But still every time I boot up, it shows new updates are available, and I see only that intel driver. If I get a 'do not update option' it would be handy.

Thanks

Some users miss that something were implemented, and suggest an idea that already were implemented years ago.

Do not mark these ideas as "Done", as it leads the users to believe that it was implemented as a result of the idea.

Developer comments
A new status for ideas have been added : "Already implemented".
From now on, ideas that are already implemented won't appear in the "implemented ideas" list.

Brainstorm: Correct behaviour of "Most popouar..." links
Written by mp3phish the 26 Mar 08 at 03:41. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
I have noticed that the most popular (today, this week, this month) links are all date weighted so if you click on the "this week" link it starts with the most popular ideas from today for the first few pages before moving to anything new. So basically, the week and month links are useless because they just repost all the stuff from the today link and you are forced to scroll through pages and pages of ideas before seeing the requested content.

I don't know if this was intentional, or in error, but here is my proposal to fix it:

items in the "today" link should be items created less than 24 hours ago

items in the "this week" link should display items created less than 7 days ago, and more than 24 hours ago

items in "this month" link should display items created less than 31 days ago, and more than 7 days ago.

This will prevent the sorting by date/score weighted formula from cluttering the results with the "today" ideas and actually allow us to browse through the weekly and monthly ideas.

Offer to install the needed Gtk Engine
Written by Kivutar the 28 Mar 08 at 08:36. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When a user install a new theme based on a Gtk engine that isn't installed yet, Ubuntu provide no error message!
Ubuntu should offer to install the needed Gtk engine, like it does with the codecs.

Resize Many Desktop Icons
Written by dry_carton the 28 Mar 08 at 13:12. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
You should be able to resize several icons at the same time in Ubuntu so you can more easily (and faster) get the same custom size on them.

Only install Help files for Users native Language
Written by bgfeldm the 28 Mar 08 at 14:36. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Under Gutsy the "/usr/share/gnome/help/" directory is 208 MB. For every application there is a help file in many languages. I only need English, someone else may only want Spanish or French. So only install help files for the Users main/native/primary Language.

--With more and more work to create more detailed help files the help file directory is likely to grow quickly above its current 208 MB.

--Under "/usr/share/gnome/help/rhythmbox" if you remove the non english languages you can save 2.9 MB;

Here is a sampling of what I found if you removed the non-english files (I randomly looked at 3 different ones):
/usr/share/gnome/help/rhythmbox 2.9 MB
/usr/share/gnome/help/windows 6.5 MB
/usr/share/gnome/help/about-ubuntu 4.3 MB

--Also since these files are XML files (with a few images), compressing them will greatly reduce the size further. You can use the GZ format which webservers use to reduce bandwidth which the browser auto uncompresses and displays.

I preformed a test by compressing the help directory with gzip "gzip -r --best help" the help directory went from 162.1 MB to 83.6 MB. Thats almost half the size.

Sound to have VU meter or visual indication to show mic in is working.
Written by captainpugwash the 28 Mar 08 at 16:02. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It drives me insane trying to diagnose if my sound card Microphone input is working correctly.

it would be great if I could have some kind of visual feed back like the old "VU" meters we used to have on old fashioned tape decks.

Getting skype to work or dealing with any "sound in" / "mic in" issues on Ubuntu has been a nightmare to trouble shoot. this would make it a bit easier.
