Give Nautilus more love! (idea examples)
Written by Adys the 31 Mar 08 at 14:46. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Nautilus does its job as a light file manager. However, as Gnome's default file manager, I think it could use a lot more love than what it is given. This could include:

- Tabbed browsing! Most browsers today support tabbed browsing, but still few file managers. This doesn't really make sense now does it?
- Better remote connection/sftp handling. The current one is AWFUL. Slow, sluggish, buggy. Take example on Konqueror!
- SVN integration has been waved at. I find it a cool idea, even if only as a plugin.
- Speaking of plugins... those also need some love. How many plugins are there for Nautilus? Most users don't even know Nautilus can be enhanced.
- File tooltips - once again, take example on Konqueror / Windows explorer.

Edit: A few more ideas around Brainstorm:
- Separation of files and folders
- Slider bar for zoom
- A better icon management
- The ability to explode folders

Those are just a handful of ideas. My main concern is Nautilus is being underdeveloped, and the solid alternative is only non-Gnome (Konqueror).

If you liked this idea, check out my other ideas.

CinePaint in 8.04 "Hardy Heron"

With CinePaint I can use OpenEXR files, so it should be included in 8.04 "Hardy Heron".

gksu /usr/bin/nautilus in Administration menu
Written by taron the 25 Mar 08 at 18:17. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As you normally do not need Nautilus with root permissions unless adminisrating your system, gksu Nautilus would be a really good thing in the Administration menu.

Many people wanted a gksu Nautilus, e.g. when you do sth. you can't should be a password queury or it should be available through the Accessoires menu. But the advantage with that in the Administration menu would be that you would only use it when you really planned it. You can't play around with it normally, because you have to open a new instance and can't just delete files from the normal Nautilus.

Add 'Do not Update This' option to Update Manager
Written by mridkash the 29 Mar 08 at 16:58. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This issue is something I face regularly and thats why I'm posting it here.

I want a right click option on the updates in Update Manager which allows me to lock the version of a software and not update it. I know this functionality exists somewhere in Synaptic Package Manager, but still it would be convenient.

Example:
I have nvidia card on desktop and there was an intel video driver update recently, so it came up in Update Manager. I didn't want to install it obviously, so I unchecked it. But still every time I boot up, it shows new updates are available, and I see only that intel driver. If I get a 'do not update option' it would be handy.

Thanks

The various Java plugins (particularly sun-java5 & 6) do not work in Firefox3 on Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy). There has been a bug report open about this since 2007-Dec-04, but it's still not resolved. The bug is currently marked as low-urgency/undecided. Java is a must for many users as there are still a number of websites which require it. Vote this up if you feel it's important.

Make actively annoying packages optional

bug
Written by christian.convey the 3 Apr 08 at 14:04. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I logged into Ubuntu 8.04 Beta, my CPU was pegged. Using top, I found it from a process related to Evolution. I think evolution-data-server-2.22.

This is annoying, because I never use Evolution. And with the advent gmail, yahoo mail, etc. I suspect fewer people each day use non-browser mail clients.

Similarly, when Beagle indexing was enabled by default, we once again had a case of imposing a nasty, unexplained CPU burden on users who didn't even want to use the service. Same thing for 'updatedb' for mlocate.

Now, to make things worse: in order to prevent evolution-data-server from hogging my CPU, I tried to uninstall it. But doing so would have uninstalled, among other things, ubuntu-desktop. If I had uninstalled ubuntu-desktop, then I wouldn't automatically receive other packages were later added it. So that wasn't a good option either.

I propose:
1. Do NOT include these annoying packages in the base installation.

2. Having a post-install (for the person doing the install) wizard. Here, prompt the users about installing sometimes-desired but sometimes-actively-undesired packages such as the ones mentioned above.

3. Haveing a post-first-login wizard, run the first time each account is logged into. Have it ask users about whether or not they want Beagle's indexing to be enabled, evoluation-data-server to be enabled, etc. This will both make them aware of these services, and let them avoid the unexplained CPU peggings.

Better Menu organization in UbuntuStudio
Written by oxigen the 29 Mar 08 at 10:30. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Now is Menu organization in UbuntuStudio chaotic, 'all' applications are in one huuuge Menu (Sound&Video). This should be done better.

My suggestion: When install UbuntuStudio it replaces Menu Applications > Sound&Video with Applications > UbuntuStudio where are placed sub menus:
"System" (Alsa, UbuntuStudio Controls, Envy24, etc);
"Server" (Jack, PulseAudio and related apps);
"Audio Player" (Xmms, Audacious, etc);
"Video Player" (Vlc, Totem, Xine, etc);
"MIDI" (Sequencers, Seq24, RosenGarden, BEAST, etc);
"Synthesizer" (ZynAddSubFx, Qsynth, etc);
"Mixer & EQ" (AlsaMixer, EchoMixer, etc);
"Audio Edit" (Ardour, Audacity, Snd, etc.);
"Video Edit" (Kino, Avidemux, etc);
"Burn & Rip" (K3B, Brasero, Grip, etc);

"Multimedia & 3D" (Blender, PureData, etc.)

Well, need discussion for more detailing structure...

Medibuntu is now available for all Ubuntu 'family' except "Hardy Heron". Should be also available there.
