Add the word 'Ubuntu' to the dictionary, with its definition.
Also add this word to the spelling checker's list for OpenOffice.org and Firefox.

Grub 2 is available in package "grub-pc" for those who want to use it. Switching to it by default won't be done once it's ready.

Color My Ubuntu Shimmering Gold and Bronze

Let's face it, brown and orange are 'distinctive' but they just aren't likely to make the transition to 'attractive' or 'gorgeous.' Ubuntu's new theme needs to knock your eyes out, yet it still needs to be unmistakably Ubuntu and NOT the other guys. Mac is the blue and silver OS, Vista is glossy black & blue. Ubuntu ought to be shimmering golden. It's a great way to graduate with dignity from good old brown.
I'm not advocating glossy gold jewelry blinding bling here. Think more golden tanned skin, bronzed reflective glass, a lions' mane, the moon and earth reflected in an astronaut's golden helmet, shimmering waves of wheat, the African veldt, the blinding corona of the sun itself. Now mix in some sky blues and silvery grey clouds to cool things off a touch.
Actually the Geubuntu Sunshine (now OpenGeu) theme has some nice similarities to this concept, but it needs to be richer.

Redesign the login dialogs (login, GDM, KDM, ...) so that this will not happen to (me) anymore: while people are watching you log in, you make a mistake, you re-login and you accidentally type your password to the visible username field...!

Say "copy photos to disk" instead of "import photos"

The term "importing" is slightly confusing and does not say what it means. It could be putting them into a data bank, converting them so a particular app can read them, copying them to a place chosen by the system...
It turns out, it means copying them to a place of your choice on the harddisk.
But it should also say that.
The term "album" is equally ambiguous and should be replaced with a description of what actually happens.

Self-burning .iso

So many new Ubuntu users get stuck at square one: they download the .iso, and don't know what to do with it. What I suggest is that the image could be bundled into a simple Windows (or Mac) executable program that would burn the disc from the host machine, similar to the principle behind a self-extracting .zip file.
To clarify, this would be a program whose sole purpose is to burn Ubuntu discs, and it would include the .iso inside it.
Ideally, the whole thing would be wrapped in a single .exe file.

People seem to think that there are only two types of uses: 1) Grandma, who uses email and pictures, and doesn't know the difference between a program and a hard drive.
2) Jimmy the hacker, who knows all the ins and outs of how to do stuff in Linux.
Dividing all Ubuntu users into these two categories is a huge mistake. Ubuntu is already great for these two groups of people.
This leads to the attitude that "beginners can't do that anyway, so there is no need to make it user friendly." Which is simply not true.
The first thing a computer-literate person wants to do when they install a new OS is see what it can do--yes, email and internet, but then they want to customize compiz, install a web server... do advanced stuff--like they do in windows. But it's not user friendly, and they are told that beginners shouldn't be trying to do that anyway... so they get frustrated and go back to Windows.

Online Ubuntu preference/data/file storage

You use many programs and configure them just right for you. You go to many websites and have a history of the pages you visit. You have your own screen-savers and backgrounds that you chose. You have a list of contacts. You have your own files in your home folder.
But what if you go to a new computer? What if you're at a friend's house and are going to use their computer? It's just not YOU.
Ubuntu should have storage online. Not just regular storage. You could log on to another computer with your user name. You would get all of your files in your home folder, all your settings, your browsing data, your contacts, everything - at this one computer! It would all sync to the internet so that you could get to whatever you need - whenever you need it, with the newest copy of the data!

When ideas are merged, all authors should earlier submitted ideas (and the current one marked dupe), should be listed in the idea.
So say we have ideas 1, 2, 3. All are dupes of 1.
When 2 is marked as a dupe, it should have authors 1 and 2. It doesn't have 3 though, because none of 3's input when into 1 and 2. 3 however should have authors 1 and 2 added to theirs in order of ideas. (Basically just authors further down the tree should be appended).

Allow install multiple UNIX kernels (Linux/BSD/OpenSolaris/Hurd)

I know that it would be hard but why don't offer support several UNIX kernels in the Ubuntu OS?
It would be awesome to join Ubuntu comunity with BSD and project Nexenta ( http://www.nexenta.org/os) guys.
Later, when GNU/Hurd is completed it would be great to include that kernel as an option to the users.
I'm not talking about making more versions of Ubuntu, I'm talking about allow users to have installed several kernels in their machines and choose what they want to use.
NOTE: if you downvote the idea, please tell me why. Thanks.

make that "9gb drive"s and mounting them as "disk-1" other way
it is annoying. in nautilus. first it is called "9gb drive" then double click it and it renames to some a "disk-4" drive.
and also i do not like media:/ way in konqueror i have seen (not in ubuntu).
i have liked a way i just have seen in debian i myself thinked about it:
clear, understandable way. an application(window) in which partitions are listed in application way (not directory browser way, nor integrated to nautilus) with all functionality (mounting, free space, mount point) and a "browse" button opens it in nautilus.
it should not be integrated to nautilus but special application. may be button to launch it on nautilus panel. may be a button on a file's content menu that launches other window/tab of this application to show on which partition this file is located.

Allow compiling CPU-optimized-version (apt-build) of packages in Synaptic
|
|
Written by diegoj the 13 Jul 08 at 21:26. Category: Others.
Related to: Synaptic package manager.
New

Integrate apt-build in the package manager as a option, so the user can choose if download a package compiled for x86 or compile a optimized-version to his/her PC (for example, Core 2 Duo, AMD64, etc).
Use case:
- Tom wants to install a dvd ripper and his computer is a Core 2 Duo. Tom knows that the software is always compiler for 686 machines that don't use many of the 'hacks' (SSE extensions, SSE2, etc.) of the new processors.
- Tom choose the dvd ripper software (acidRip, for example).
- Tom selects in Synaptic: "compile optimized-version for this machine".
- The package manager downloads the source and compiles an agressive-optimized-version of this package. At the end, it installs the software.
Of course, instead of using apt-build (wich I see It's the easiest way), it can be a something like has Gentoo Linux in its Portage Package Manager ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portage_(software)).

I would love to be able access my data on all of my Ubuntu running Machines, media server, desktop, laptop, Asus EEE, and Android Phone etc securely accross the internet.
Currently this is complicated to set up and requires using outside comapnies to deal with Internet addressing and security issues.
I would love it If Ubuntu could just put a magic button on my directories and files where I could just press and automatically using my log_on password share my data and files across the internet to where ever I am.
I would be happy to pay Canonical Ubuntu for this service as I would trust them and it would be a one stop solution.
They could also offer other premium services to offset the cost of developing Ubuntu.
