When a user opens a bunch of application every time they log in, they might not realize that the Sessions manager can do this for them.
A simple service can track what users typically do in a session, when they see someone open an application like Evolution early on when they log in almost every time they do, it can suggest that they might benefit from having this open for them and offer to add it to Sessions for them.
This would be more practical if it only tracks when the user is 'busy', as in, using the mouse or keyboard. I know when I turn my computer on it can be like half an hour later before I even have the chance to sit and do anything with it.
This service could also be used for users to check on some interesting statistics for themselves, what applications they use (or have open) the most, and perhaps this can eventually be used to submit statistics for researchers who may need this information.

Don't allow multiple instances of update manager, package manager etc

Sometimes when I click the little notification icon for the update manager it takes a while for the app to launch. Not sure whether I actually clicked the icon I click it again. This usually leads to that I have something like 2 - 3 instances of the update manager running.
From a user point of view It would be better if Ubuntu disallowed multiple instances of the update manager and other apps where there is absolutely no need to have more than one instance running. The same goes for add/remove and others.

Imbedding a "dynamic" calendar into the desktop background

I would like to see an extra option implemented in the system tray clock which takes a copy of the current desktop image and then imbeds a calendar image into it - this would be done every time the system boots or when the date changes. The reason for doing this each boot/date change is so that the current date can be highlighted.
The idea comes from the UserFriendly monthly desktop images:
http://www.userfriendly.org/illiad/UFCalendar_SEP2008-MON.png
If implemented, please allow for user definable positioning.
Also, it would be extra sweet if it could be (optionally) linked with an agenda program so that dates with events on them could be highlighted.

Support Reiser4 file system development

Reiser4 is a very high performance, journaled file system. In most cases it is much much faster than other common file systems like jfs, xfs, ext3 and even ext4.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiser4
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Reiser4
Unfortunately it's development suffer from many issues. The code must be improved before it can be accepted by kernel developers. There are also personal problems, since Nemesys died, there are not enough people to work with the project. Developers work rather voluntary so it's not full time job and progress is very slow.

http://kerneltrap.org/node/6844
Cannonical (maybe in collaboration with other linux companies) could officially take care of Reiser4 project, hire developers and give an open source world a great gift – Reiser4 in the official vanilla linux kernel.
Low costs, great benefits – safe and the best performance file system world ever seen.
It is a dream of many linux users around the world which now have to spend a lot of time and do a lot of tricky work to make Reiser4 usable on their machines.

As a non technical novice, ideas are different than those posted by technical minds. Ideas for easy use by grandma are usually voted down by technical people, allow the novice to vote up or down based on their usage ability.

Please tap Ctrl + Alt + F8. You can go back with Ctrl + Alt + F7. Is there any reason for this virtual terminal? You can't do anything with it. (only read the text there) Nobody does need it.

Internet Explorer for Ubuntu

I am working on development of Data Center Management softwares with one of the leading software company. Almost all of our softwares are web based and support Firefox and Internet Explorer as web browser.
While testing the software we need to test it for both web browsers. And I use ubuntu on my desktop, so it is little difficult to install IE. I tried IEs4Linux. But this emulated software itself has it's own problems.
So what I feel is if ubuntu supports IEs4Linux officially and give an option to install IEs4linux (may be in optional packages) then it will of great help to web developers.
We should accept the fact that after firefox, IE is the next big preferred choice in web browsers.

Pause Applications or QuickKey NICE values

CONCEPT: When running a virtual machine (VirtualBox for example) it is possible to pause the VM with a key combination.
It would be great if you could key bind a NICE process priority, but Better Yet, be able to pause a task that might be eating resources (such as compiling code in a window).
EXAMPLE: Compile code in a XTERM and realizing you wish to transcode a video or convert an audio file in a 2nd window.
CONCEPT: using the above example, the ability to stop temporarily a task but then being able to resume it again later.

When you are activating a compiz effect, you actually don't know what will you get. So these effects (and perhaps tips for using them) can be previewed in a short flash movie so you will know what you are doing. Google Sketch Up already has something like this.

.deb integrity checks need improving. MD5 is cracked

When we download updates (deb files), we are vulnerable to attacks.
Recent results published by cryptographers say:
"MD5 should no longer be used as a hash function for software integrity or code signing purposes."
http://www.win.tue.nl/hashclash/SoftIntCodeSign/
http://www.mscs.dal.ca/~selinger/md5collision/
We really don't want some malicious code installed on nice clean ubuntu systems, keylogging, spamming, ddos'ing etc. And just imagine how quick the malicious code will be spread with apt updates.
So let's not wait for this to happen. We need to find an alternative cryptographic function. SHA-1 is not perfect but harder to crack. Does anyone know anything better?

Familiar Look to the File System For Windows Refugees

The standard linux filesystem starts with / as opposed to c:\.
To encourage windows users, there be a way to spoof the look of a windows style filesystem. The idea is to alias root as C:\ and mounted drives under other letters, and show reverse slashes throughout the filesystem. To a windows user, the / root is intimidating, and the "reversed" (from their perspective) slashes are a different look and a strange feel to adapt to. This change is a good opportunity to make users feel at-home.

Release two Ubuntu options for USA and the other countries

If I am not mistaken, Ubuntu can not include some software (codecs and such) by default due to legal issues in USA and some other countries. So, users from the rest of the world suffer from inconvenience for no reason. Then, why not make two releases - for USA and countries with similar legislation concerning this issue, and the rest of the world? Then, at least some users could use the full-featured system out-of-box.
Edit: And, speaking of free software, ubuntu now has a gobuntu - pure open source flavour, so why should the original Ubuntu still sacrifice its usability? Do not forget, that lack of codecs and similar stuff makes Ubuntu unusable without an high speed Internet connection, which is still a problem in some countries
