Allow Simple Surveys on Brainstorm
Written by Tree MendUs the 26 Sep 08 at 08:07. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Idea;

Allow users to create simple surveys on Brainstorm.

========================
for example

1) rate each of the following options on a scale 1 to 10

2) choose which of the following options is the most important

3) add "other" option to list of options

4) show statistics

Brainstorm uses the Drupal CMS system, and it has a number of voting/polling/survey/questionaire modules.
see the kind of voting modules that are available at -

http://drupal.org/project/Modules/category/60

If there is a worry about abuse, then the system could require the user to submit their survey for approval to be published.

Ideas could be linked to surveys, and surveys could be linked to ideas (can use the tag system for this right now, or just list them within the text).

It could be made possible for some polls to be able to be responded to by non-members of Brainstorm, to gather "Public" opinion.

Ability to bookmark an idea After you have commented on it.
Written by Tree MendUs the 26 Sep 08 at 10:17. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The bookmark star icon is available for bookmarking an idea - most of the time.
But it is not available for bookmarking after an idea has been commented on (on the page that shows straight after the comment.

It would be nice if it was possible to bookmark an idea after commenting on it.

Highlight ideas in dashboard with *new* comments
Written by enbuyukfener the 26 Sep 08 at 07:05. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Currently the dashboard shows your ideas and latest comments but doesn't have any method besides manually looking at times and remembering your last visit to be able to identify unread/new comments.

Would save a lot of time and prevent people's comments from not being lost or forgotten about by the idea submitter.

Include Stunning Gnome 2.24 Wallpapers in Intrepid
Written by ubunteando the 26 Sep 08 at 09:45. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome 2.24 has been released with some great new features, focusing on improving user experience through its GUI.

http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/Upgrade_Your_Linux_Desktop_Experience_With_GNOME_ 2DOT24

I imagine that it's too late to include them... BUT AT LEAST, include its new beautiful wallpapers, to TRY TO SAVE this release...

--------------------INCLUE THEM BY DEFAULT--------------------

Since, at least for what I've seen in Alpha 6, is almost Hardy with a different name.

EDIT: Is sad to realize Dev's still DON'T GET IT.

Developer comments
The GNOME wallpapers are available in the "gnome-backgrounds" package

Lancelot Plasmoid as an option on Kubuntu 8.10
Written by retj the 13 Sep 08 at 18:07. Category: Usability. Related to: Kubuntu. New
Lancelot is a menu that works ten times better than Kickoff. I'm not saying to use it as default but at least having it as an option in the default installation.

an Ubuntu indie-game portal where we can submit our games
Written by nitrofurano the 13 Sep 08 at 17:52. Category: Gaming. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Would be interesting if a portal from Canonical, or close enough to the Ubuntu communities, could have an indie game portal, focused on Ubuntu and the packaging process, where we can easily submit the games we coded there.

There are some interesting indie games working similarly in the web, but nothing truly focusing open-source indie games, or even Linux distros like Ubuntu.

Rename to make a mark or Glowrify/magnify application names
Written by dragoninsane the 13 Sep 08 at 15:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

Every application in ubuntu are just there because they are meant to be there nothing special in naming those applications like Rename the application to its full name rather than just text editor or so this will help users not just remember the application name and make preference when selecting application and allows users to better know the application. Its good idea to mix some menu's that are related like network and internet.
remove redundancy and try simplicity network and network tools can be mixed also Using
naming conventions in some elements of popular os like Mac or win doesnt hurt
Rename these:
text editor >> Gedit text editor
movie player >> Totem movie player
search files >> Beagle file search or catfish file search or tracker file search (when beagle installed, when catfish installed, when tracker installed)
Terminal >>open command line in gnome terminal
Ark >> Archive manager
image viewer >> Eye of gnome image viewer
cheese >> cheese webcam application
Evolution mail >> Evolution Email and calendar
Gqview >> Gqview Image viewer
transmission >> transmission Torrent download tool
evince >> evince pdf and postscript viewer
K3b>>k3b burning application
xmms >> Xmms Music player
Kino >> kino video editor
Kaffeine >> Kaffeine movie player
amarok >> amarok music player
Avidemux >> video editor
Gkrellm>> ??,Htop >> ??, x-sensors >> ??
Address book >> i think user should know where address book is like inside evolution or users and group?

Tutorial   forum
Written by buu700 the 13 Sep 08 at 16:58. Category: Documentation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
"You know that annoying "Welcome to Windows" tutorial that pops up the first time you boot into Windows (or every time thereafter if you forget the checkbox (Or at least it did in Win2k and XP I dunno about Vista))? For new users, there should be an option for that in the install - an opt-in choice like "Please install a tutorial to use the first time I run Ubuntu." Then, when booting up, it wouldn't just pop up, but there would be an icon on the desktop titled "Tutorial" or something of the sort. Click on that, and a little animated paperclip would... I kid, I kid. No, you click on that, and it would give you a basic overview of things that trip up new users: installing programs, home vs. My Documents, sudo/root, what the pre-installed programs do (i.e. OpenOffice Writer = Word), etc. It wouldn't go into more advanced stuff like compiling your own program - that would scare people off. But it would explain what people need to get off the ground.

Do y'all think it's a bad idea/ I dunno, I'm just brainstorming out loud, so feel free to shout me down, or suggest something better. *shrugs*"

Distribute "ubuntu @ (school)", and have the school pay for it.
Written by davidbaldwin the 14 Sep 08 at 01:48. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I hear a lot of talk about the distribution of ubuntu. I think its one of the major problems for ubuntu. Yes, anyone can download it for free online, but if you really want people to try it out, you have to put it in their hands.

This idea is only if the ubuntu community and canonical are really serious about disturbing the OS to Everyone. If you think its ready for prime time, than this idea will bring it to prime time status.

----------

I am a student at the University of Central Florida. UCF is the 6th largest University in the United States with over 50,000 students.
http://ucf.edu/
I am a Junior with a major in Digital Media (specifically web-design).

I have an idea to distribute ubuntu to people that can make a difference. In class the other day, we were talking about how people don’t use Open Office, because they either don’t know about it, or they are afraid of change. The interesting thing about my generation is, is that with the always changing internet, we are more adapt to change then any generation before it. This makes students today ideal candidates to try out ubuntu.

The other problem is what I can help do something about. What I have noticed by asking people around campus, is that if they have heard of Linux (some have) or ubuntu (most haven't) then they have a very bad opinion of it. In general, most people think that it is for technical engineering students and that there is a huge learning curve to using it. Most people i talked to are not willing to put the effort forth to download it to try it, but they would be willing to try it if they were given a copy.

Alright, before you scream..we can’t afford to do that...HOLD ON!

So, most Universities (including this one) have a ‘new club’ budget policy. From what I have found, If a new club is started they get a $500 budget to use to improve the students, the community, etc. This money would go to support the ubuntu community and the students by distributing open source software (ubuntu). The University will evaluate the budget every year and alter the budget based on the club’s request and what they did with the money they had. So, next year, we could end up with thousands of dollars to distribute ubuntu.

firefox should remember what workspaces its windows are on
Written by collinstocks the 13 Sep 08 at 20:20. Category: Usability. Related to: Firefox. New
When Firefox recovers from a crash or restart, it should remember what windows were on which workspaces and recover them to there correct position.

This should work for both compiz and metacity.

Better Support for USB Wireless Network Cards
Written by habib_seif the 13 Sep 08 at 16:41. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Previous versions of ubuntu had no problems with USB Wireless Network Cards if I installed ndiswarapper package
But this package hasn't worked since 7.04 version.
Therefore, better support for these category of network cards would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Get rid of the "other" category in the menu editor
Written by deadowl the 15 Aug 08 at 01:17. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The stuff in my other category that I can check off includes.

Autorun Prompt
Decrypt File
Font Viewer
Import Key
Menu Editor
Open Folder
Screens and Graphics
Sun Java 6 Runtime
Theme Installer
Verify Signature

All of these can be placed into already existing categories, i.e. accessories, preferences, and administration.

I also know that not all of this will come on a default installation for menu options... but seriously... an "Other" category is useless.

make Gnome-app-install more like iPhone's app store
Written by DanRabbit the 14 Aug 08 at 22:27. Category: System. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
Once again, Apple didn't invent anything new (software repos) but they sure showed us how to do it the right way! Not only is iPhone's app store is beautifully simple, it features detailed descriptions, screenshots, reviews, ratings, and more without being overwhelming or cluttered.

It allows you to see the "Top 25" applications downloaded by users at the moment, A selection for the newest applications, and ones that are being specially featured by Apple. And, because of the iTunes account, it's also extremely easy to purchase applications without having to re-enter credit card information or anything like that.

Now, imagine what a desktop implementation of that is going to look like in the next version of OS X. Or, don't imagine it. Build it for Ubuntu first. Take gnome-app-install and beef it up with some of the before-mentioned features. Revise the rating system so that we can actually RATE something. Add paypal support (or something equivalent), so that we can donate to specific projects from our desktops without hunting around their website. And make it beautiful and simple, so that it will be a major selling point for new users.

Have gnome desktop remember mountable location placement...
Written by Predator106 the 15 Aug 08 at 01:17. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
I have found that Gnome(the desktop), when commonly used, and often used mounting points are mounted and unmounted, they forget their location on the desktop.

-Insert DVD-1
-Install it
-Unmount it(eject)

-Insert DVD-2
-Notice it doesn't remember the location of the icon.

I'm not sure if the computer has to be rebooted or if it's a bug

It is also possible, that just because a different DVD/CD is put in, it forgets it's place, even though it is on the same mount point.

I have tried to do this with the same DVD without rebooting, and it doesn't occur...

One thing that really really bugs me about this, is that they can commonly be overlapped by another common icon. For instance, Firefox can overlap the DVD icon, in which case, I have to drag the Firefox icon away from it, move the DVD out of the way, and put the Firefox icon back.

Push for Dell-Ubuntu Laptops Cheaper than Dell-M$
Written by carickw the 15 Aug 08 at 14:00. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I just looked online to see how much a Dell with Ubuntu preloaded was and then looked at the same laptop with windows. To my amazement, the Ubuntu laptop was not even the same price as the Windows one, it was MORE!!!

The laptop I looked at was the XPS M1330 and the Windows version was $999 - $100 savings = 899, while the Ubuntu version was still at $999. Even though the smart ones (us) know about the benefits of using ubuntu, whats the incentive to buy the open source Ubuntu over the well-known Windows platform.

Right now, Vista Home Premium is about a $100, so the fact that ubuntu is free, the same computer with Ubuntu should be ~$100 less than the Windows computer with home premium.

A Brainstorm API for mashups and data mining.
Written by Ubun2ideas the 11 Aug 08 at 16:22. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Currently we can only look up ideas by id, user, category and tags. This is very limiting. Maybe we'd like to view and organize the data in other ways. Opening up an API would help in this matter.

Who knows, maybe people would be interested in creating mashups based on Brainstorm data. At least, with an API, there would be the possibility of creating different ways of organizing and viewing the accumulated dataset.

Drag and Drop list of download links into download window ....
Written by xVx the 11 Aug 08 at 16:04. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Epiphany. New
Sometimes I download a bunch of files like:

http://www.downloadprovider.mx/file/something1.rar
http://www.downloadprovider.mx/file/something2.rar
http://www.downloadprovider.mx/file/something3.rar
http://www.downloadprovider.mx/file/something4.rar
http://www.downloadprovider.mx/file/something5.rar
http://www.downloadprovider.mx/file/something6.rar

It would be neat if one could highlight all of these links, right-click and select "download all" or even just drag and drop the links onto an icon in the header or into the download window.

I realize that there are apps that accomplish similar but I am not big on having hundreds of apps installed for every little thing..

Maybe a plugin in Epiphany would do?

Thanks for reading.

Allow file name change and erasing in "Open fille window"
Written by lightdreamer the 11 Aug 08 at 14:07. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I am opening a file (Archive > Open) in any program (for example, Gimp) I sometimes found in this "Open file window" some mistakes in some file's name and I want to correct them. If I want to do that I have to go back to Nautilus. The same thing if I want to delete a file. I would like to be able to change name and delete files in this "Open file" window. In Windows you can do that.

kevinfishburne explains very well what I wanted to say in a comment (thank you!):

Most applications whose functionality include allowing the user to select a file or directory accomplish this by presenting the user with a GUI. The GUI is usually a separate (child) window of the main (parent) window, created with code from the API/library of the developer's choice. KDE, GNOME, and GTK all have their own libraries with their own different GUI's for selecting files and directories.

In contrast, MS Windows typically has two GUI's for selecting files and directories. The legacy GUI, with limited interactivity (can't delete, rename, etc.), and the Explorer GUI with full Explorer functionality (open, detail/thumbnail view, properties/permissions, etc.).

The problems being addressed here are that:

1) There are too many different GUI's being used for file/directory selection in different programs.

2) The GUI's are all terrible with extremely limited functionality.

KDE's doesn't list GNOME bookmarks, none of them let you manipulate files with much of the functionality of their respective file managers, and they generally either don't show thumbnail previews or do so in a limited way.

This problem needs to be addressed on two levels:

Use a textless window list by default
Written by ethana2 the 11 Aug 08 at 22:23. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Window lists are visually noisy information overload. I'm using cairo-dock now, but all I want is a simple little gnome-panel applet.

Right now, the best default UI i've seen in an OS is OSX, and that pains me --but we can change that with a single panel applet.
