"Device is now safe to remove" message should only appear once per USB device
Written by jsereno the 9 Jun 08 at 08:50. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It seems that the "Device is now safe to remove" pop-up message, when unmounting a USB device such as a flash drive, assumes that you only have one partition on said device. If you have two or more partitions, it shows up a separate "Device is now safe to remove" message for each volume you unmount, and if you do them all in succession, you get the pop-ups stacked neatly on top of each other in the corner of your screen (observed on Hardy 32-bit and 64-bit).

This presents problems for new users - if you've unmounted one volume, but not another on the same USB device, then the device is clearly not safe for disconnecting yet and the pop-up message is misleading.

Additionally, safely unmounted USB devices still appear in Gnome's "Computer" window (Places->Computer), but finally disappear when you physically disconnect the USB device. This can confuse users as well.

Finally, the way Ubuntu disconnects USB devices seems to be different to how Windows does it. Even though Ubuntu is satisfied that the device has been safely disconnected, the device itself believes otherwise. A typical example is pretty much any Nokia mobile phone that can act as a USB flash device such as a Nokia N95 - upon disconnecting the USB cable after a successful unmount, the phone insists that the disconnection was unclean and that "data could be lost". It only records a clean disconnection from Ubuntu if you perform a shutdown on Ubuntu (suggesting that the phone is only satisfied when the USB stack is finally shutdown). Not a big deal for experienced users who know that a safe disconnection did occur, but will certainly send new users into panic stations.

Google SketchUp for Linux   forum
Written by DutchDude the 9 Jun 08 at 09:27. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi Google,

Thanks for indexing this page!

It would be really cool if SketchUp would work in Ubuntu. Can you arrange that?

Thanks for your consideration!

Warm regards,

DutchDude

UPDATE: It took me a while to find out how to run it with Wine. It works more or less, so a Linux version of Google Sketchup is still welcome! Read How to install Google SketchUp 6 for Windows in Ubuntu Linux with Wine if you want to install it with Wine.

Ubuntu Premium Service/product providers (UbuntuCentres)
Written by Auzy the 8 Jun 08 at 15:33. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be good if computer resellers and other computer companies could apply to be an Ubuntu Premium Service propro

Some of our requirements could be:
- Online testing & training of 2 employees minimum required every distro upgrade release. This ensures there are people who are trained who know the improvements and advantages. This is a basic test
- One Provider specific test. Companies offering programming services should be tested with basic coding questions, education and server providers, on Ubuntu server, etc. This ensures the staff do know about the topic they are trying to provide.
- Providers must offer full support for their products for Ubuntu, and try to ensure their products work with updated releases within 1 month of release
- Resellers have to maintain at least 1 computer that can be preinstalled with Ubuntu before sale. If additional drivers are required, they should be provided on a OEM copy of ubuntu.

Benefits for them:
- CD's and advertising posters/materials are automatically sent to resellers, so they can advertise the new OS being released (as Apple does with their resellers). Gets the hype up
- Better channel of support from Canonical/Ubuntu.
- Advertising under ubuntu's webpage for premium providers. For resellers, that may generate a lot of extra ubuntu sales. For providers, they may snap up a lot of large companies.

This system has worked very successfully for Apple, and will help highlight people who actively promote/sell ubuntu. It also ensures that those who actively promote ubuntu have the marketing material they need to build up hype.

One place to find all software
Written by sdmatt1975 the 9 Jun 08 at 00:33. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The applications, places, admin set up makes sense the more learn about Ubuntu...kinda.

Why should a new user have to go snooping around like Indiana Jones to find all the options to locate new software. Why not just put all the options as a sub menu of add/remove...?

Use a standard name for config files.
Written by uaneme the 8 Jun 08 at 11:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
the recent post from Andruk http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9645/ brought me to this idea:

Use a standard name for config files.

wish me luck on getting votes since this goes all the way up to debian / linux / the whole *NIX cloud...

i'm affraid this will make a new record in negative votes.
tho positive votes might not make it happen but they WOULD EVENTUALLY get the message to a higher place.

.conf would be fine, easy to locate and back up.

bet there is also php.ini

Personally i think this is the way forward to make backups
it's a waste of space and time to make complete images of files they never change or evaluate with updates.

eventually make a difference in kinds of configs

.ini for initialise
.conf for internal configuration
.somethingelse for host specific settings (IP, hostname related)

or something else in that extend but STANDARD.

hehe this is sooooo not up to me... but i hope this post will kick up some dust. :-D

remove file-roller
Written by henk0775 the 8 Jun 08 at 18:36. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
File-roller has 46 critical bugs open, is (I think) orphan and has an inconsistent interface (contexual menu view and open with). It could be replaced by fuse or by a nautilus script.
Remove file-roller is secure, because is only a front-end to tar, unrar, etc...

Icon Tab + Icon Picker
Written by Double D the 9 Jun 08 at 03:58. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add an icons tab to the appearance preferences (which i think would be better than having it inside of Themes>Customize) that allows you to install an icon pack easily and choose an icon one by one.

So, if you don't like a particular icon in the set, you can change it (just as you are able to change fonts) instead of having to go into the .icon folder and manually switch out the files.

Upload Bar in Browsers (firefox, konqueror, etc)
Written by azag the 8 Jun 08 at 17:51. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
we need this for big files, and is important to do the upload in a 'different window', so if you click in a link in the same page while uploading, the upload continue in progress.
the browser will open a new window with the response of the server for the upload when its done.
or may be just disable links until its done or cancel the upload, so you not break the flow of the site

include it in generic progress bars for kde4 would be great too.

Ubuntu with codecs
Written by vexorian the 8 Jun 08 at 14:13. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
So, after analyzing this: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9637/ and seeing how some people really like codecs for proprietary formats, I think I must say this:

- Remix's codec licensing(tax) should be optional (Refer to the other brainstorm's link)
- As a matter of fact the same goes for flash and adobe reader.
- Now that canonical licenses codecs in remix, I think there should be a way to order online or purchase a download of a desktop ubuntu CD that comes with those codecs installed and legally licensed, so if some people really think it is important to have their codecs preinstalled they could put money where their mouth was. The condition for this not to be evil would be that the codecs were the only difference between these both variations of the desktop ubuntus. The OS would still be free whatsoever, but if people want to license codecs, they would be able to. In other words, they are actually purchasing the codecs, the ubuntu installation is a freebie that comes with that purchase.

GUI user friendly failsafe for X and other program crash recovery
Written by Yfrwlf the 8 Jun 08 at 22:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Not all users are savvy enough for Control-Alt-Fx. There should be a user friendly failsafe/bailout/etc GUI for when X becomes unresponsive due to the user becoming trapped inside an application, or when X freezes. Also, sometimes Control-Alt-Fx isn't even possible and my guess is that X is preventing this somehow (as the mouse pointer is usually still movable). Both of these problems should be addressed with a rock-solid failsafe system (or two). Perhaps this could be done by extending the bullet-proof-X project somehow for ending programs while stuck in X and X is still functioning, and there has to be some way that X can be terminated or restarted when X is so borked that even a Control-Alt-Backspace isn't working.

Problem #1 specifics (desktop inaccessible): When X is still functional enough, you can use Ctrl-Alt-Bksp, but this may destroy some unsaved work, but some type of failsafe to use before that happens would be better. Adding the System Monitor as an option to the shutdown menu which is accessible by Control-Alt-Delete may be one solution as long as that shutdown window will override and work in any and all screen modes or resolutions X may be in. Whatever the solution, it needs to be easy and obvious for new users to perform, so Ctrl-Alt-Del is the obvious choice.

Problem #2 specifics (X lockup, or shortcut keys unresponsive): Perhaps an additional program which does a very simple check on the X server periodically could address this second problem. Linux should be virtually crash-proof, lets help keep that image. Using the reset button should be a no-no, and logging in remotely shouldn't have to be done. You can't count on X not to crash, but the kernel is usually rock solid. Yes, X should be fixed to not crash, but something to back it up wouldn't hurt. This would help add polish to the system.

Create a "Compiz Configuration Wizard" with demonstration-button for Ibex.
Written by diablo75 the 8 Jun 08 at 22:01. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it would be neat if, just after enabling desktop effects, it offered the user the opportunity to customize Compiz via a Wizard, which would basically ask them some yes or no questions. Questions like, "Would you like to enable the Scale plugin?", and next to the question somewhere is a "Demonstration" button that shows the plug-in in action.

DEMONSTRATION BUTTON: Instead of a pre-captured video (which would make for a larger footprint in bytes), you could actually make the effect happen live onscreen with the elements they already have present -- a live demonstration with an animated cursor or subtitles showing keyboard shortcuts on the screen and perhaps some temporary popup windows to manipulate if necessary for demonstration, so they could really SEE an effect in action. It would be better than a little video looping over and over, in my opinion. It could also work as a tool for teaching keyboard shortcuts, if not reconfigure a binding to something they like.

The Wizard should be aimed at new users who aren't familiar with Ubuntu or Compiz yet, who would appreciate the simplicity of answering just a few questions to get Compiz to do what they want it to do.

I think this is necessary because there is probably a chunk of new users out there who aren't aware of ALL capabilities/features Compiz has to offer. And if they are led via a Wizard on a "tour of Compiz" of sorts, they'll possibly discover a feature they've never seen before and love it.

Have windows open in the same place on the same monitor they were closed from.
Written by mattalexx the 8 Jun 08 at 20:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have two monitors. When I log in to work, I always open the same four or five apps. But then, I have to drag them all over the place so get them how I like them. I am required to do this every time I open them.

I propose that window statuses are saved (which monitor, position on the monitor, expanded size, maximized or not, ...) so that the user's workflow isn't interrupted.

I would love to be able to click the icon, look at where the window will be and have it open to meet me.

Provide an explaination for 64-bit Ubuntu and if its supported by their computer
Written by Gatesgamer33 the 9 Jun 08 at 01:40. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Some people might not know that their processor supports a 64-bit OS. With an information page, it would be easer for them to download the best version for their processor. This page could include: How to tell if I can run 64-bit Ubuntu, The advantages and disadvantages of 64-bit, etc.

We need to have more people aware of 64-bit computing.

If you right-click on a folder, and go to "Share" tab, an ugly icon appears on the top left corner:

http://www.box.net/shared/coos9xu880

I think this can be replaced by an icon in the native human icon theme -- "/usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/filesystems/gnome-fs-share.svg":

http://www.box.net/shared/79r57kxyc4

So the whole thing will look like this (edited using GIMP):

Group updates by source package
Written by wiz the 2 Jun 08 at 07:46. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In update-manager, updates are listed by binary-packages which are produced in batches from source-packages in one2many fashion. What yields multiple duplicate changelists and obfuscates somewhat overall meaning of updates list.

More than that, installing one part of source package (ie *-core), while keeping some other (ie *-data, because of large update size) leads to unstable system, confusing people.

And as a side bonus there will be saner names in list (one libgdata instead of series of libgdata-spam, libgdata-eggs and so).

Probably it should be a Gtk TreeView with source packages in rows, expandable to binary packages.
Or source packages in plain main list, with additional tab for description panel with updated binaries list.

Shortened names in icon view
Written by francois the 1 Jun 08 at 07:32. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When the name of a file or folder exceed a certain size (depending on font size) please truncate the name so that the text does not take too much place compared with the icon size.

It's on the desktop that this behavior would be most significant

I think it could be useful for small screen resolution or for people that simply want a compact icon view but I understand that some people wouldn't want such a behaviour, so of course it should be an option.
