[33] Ubuntu Centralized Image Installation/Recovery/Backup

The idea here is to have an application, which will run on a server in a LAN, and will help us manage multiple clients (Server or Desktops) in the LAN.

By this I mean having an application that helps us manage the Server/Desktop client through a centralized server and that will allow us to create images of the installed OS (Ubuntu) in the client machine, and restore it when needed, doing all this from the Centralized Server.

This idea emerged from the need of having such tool on Computer Labs (In Schools or Universities), where they regularly need to reinstall programs or an OS on their machines if something goes wrong with one of it. So, by having such application, we would be able to restore images remotly from the centralized server to the client machine, and this will aid the administration of a computer lab.

Similar to what RIS (Remote Installation Services) is, but just for Ubuntu.

Few months ago, I graduated as a Systems Engineer (Which in Peru would be the equivalent to Computer Science in other countries) with my thesis "Designing a Model to Implement a High Availability Cluster for Web Servers". You can obtain more information about it here [1].

The thing is, after doing it, i realized that it would be great to have an application to implement and manage LVS Based Clusters (Modify config files, restarting servers, creating new configurations, and all that's involved with that) from a centralized server.

This means, that it would be great to configure and manage all the servers in the cluster configuration, from one single server. This way, LVS based clusters would be easier to manage, and we would also popularize Ubuntu in Cluster Implementations, because we would have a tool that will make things easier.

This idea, also extends to managing DRBD data servers, and managing any kind of heartbeat configurations, and all that could be needed to implement/manage LVS Based Clusters.

[1]: http://roaksoax.wordpress.com/2008/07/17/ubuntu-in-my-thesis-part-2/

Launchpad needs a Wiki unrelated to Ubuntu. When we opened our open source project (ubuntu related, in a way) i was uncertain about being allowed to use Ubuntu wiki to fill one (1) page about the project.

I really think you should provide a wiki to every project in launchpad (maybe with the chance to choose to have an external one).

The rationale is:
- having an own wiki requires hosting. Why use launchpad for bugtracking and buying hosting space just for the wiki ?
- Ubuntu wiki is inherently unrelated for many of the projects.
- Launchpad's blueprints require an external site. This shouldn't be necessary

Right now, the most likely successful migrations to Ubuntu happen for *nix experts and total novices who have someone install Ubuntu for them, but the most likely people to try Ubuntu are Windows power users--those who like a lot of configuration options but who are also used to using the GUI for tweaking options and not manually editing a text configuration file.

The most popular requests for editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file involve changing the default boot option (to Windows instead of Ubuntu) and changing the timeout before a boot option is selected. The other less popular ones would be just bonus features, I guess.
User logs into the system.
2. User opens the Codec Manager.
3. System displays a list of common audio/video formats.
4. User selects MP3s.
5. System displays some info about MP3s.
6. System displays a list of available codecs.
7. User selects a codec and clicks Apply.
8. System downloads and installs the selected codec.
9. System informs the user when completed.

Other possible features:
- Display a list of audio/video types that are missing codecs.
- An auto-setup function, that grabs the recommended codec for all formats.

Audio and Video formats that should be supported:

Audio:
- MP3
- OGG
- AAC
- FLAC
- Real Audio

Video:
- MP4
- Windows Media
- XVID
- DIVX
- Quicktime
- Real Video
