Brainstorm: Users can mark their own ideas as 'revoked' to stop voting.

You should be able to mark any of your own ideas that currently have a zero or negative score as 'revoked' to close voting on that idea, and remove it from consideration. Being able to revoke your ideas will have at least three distinct benefits:
1) It would give users less ideas to vote on. Currently there's thousands of ideas. If we allow users to recall some of their ideas it would be a form of self-regulation, reducing the number of ideas eligible for voting, thereby helping us focus on the good ideas.
2) It would keep a user's score from plummeting indefinitely due to (possibly just one) bad ideas being submitted. Why should your score continue to tumble over the course of weeks and possibly months with people voting your bad idea down? If you concede it is a bad idea, you should be able to 'undo' your mistake.
3) Given the 'protection' afforded users in item 2 (above), users would not be afraid of submitting 'wild' or 'unconventional' ideas which might otherwise damage their overall score. Conventional brainstorming requires that ideas be received in a non-judgemental manner. - the purpose of which is to give people free range to fly any idea that they think might be worth considering. The community might benefit from some of these wilder, riskier ideas.
Maybe their should also be conditions on which ideas can be revoked. Maybe an idea can only be revoked within the first week of it's issue. Maybe only until it reaches a certain number of views or votes. Perhaps if an idea receives a certain number of up votes it cannot be revoked. Etc.
Revoked ideas can remain in the main listing, just with a special icon (similar to the lock icon for closed ideas) indicated it's revoked status. In your dashboard, any up / down votes that idea received will be removed from your score. Also, a new category 'revoked ideas' will list the total number of revoked ideas you have. Your revoked ideas will also remain listed under the 'my ideas' tab, with the aforementioned special icon.
Perhaps the process of revoking an idea will also give the user an opportunity to revise their original idea based on other user's comments.

Intel HD Audio hardware is capable of delivering the support and sound quality for up to eight channels at 192 kHz/32-bit quality, while the AC‘97 specification can only support six channels at 48 kHz/20-bit. In addition, Intel HD Audio is architected to prevent the occasional glitches or pops that other audio solutions can have by providing dedicated system bandwidth for critical audio functions.

Get IBM to offer Ubuntu on its desktop/Laptop

Ubuntu struck a deal with Dell a while back, to offer Ubuntu on its computers. Dell started with two laptops, I believe, and is adding two more soon.
IBM is a huge contributer to Open Source, it supports Red Hat and SUSE, it would be amazing if when I go to buy my custom thinkpad t61 workstation laptop if it could ship with Ubuntu. Even better yet if IBM got involved they would make support for features on the thinkpad, such as thinkvantage, and fingerprint reader. (I know there is an idea for fingerprint...please dont dupe...)
What I am suggesting may already be in effect, and if so please don't mark down, I did research and could not find anything....
The main idea is to get IBM to offer Ubuntu pre-loaded on some of its desktops/laptops. If they get involved further than great.

"Please Choose a Location" from Ubuntu download page should be a map.

When you visit http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download to download the latest Ubuntu release, you currently get a huge dropdown menu. Then you have to scroll down a huge list filled with continent names, and a lot of strange looking server names -- where is Mirrors.brianm.name located anyway? I don't need so see all that.
We can do better. How about a world map that lets you click on your current location - or relative location?
To paraphrase user-interface guru and recent mozilla hire, Aza Raskin, whenever you ask a user to make a choice they don't care about, you fail as an interface designer. Me and probably 99.9% or the people who visit the Ubuntu download page don't care which specific server we download from. We just want our download. Give us a map, ask us to click on the part of the continent we're on, and leave the rest up to you.
REVISION:
Following our discussion below,
* we can use the user's IP to narrow the possibilities of which servers will best handle the request.
* possibly add an algorithm which takes into account both geographic proximity to user's ISP, as well as real-time server availability.
* returning a short list (of possibly three) servers which might best handle the request.
* naming the servers by city, state/province, country, and not by their (sometimes arcane) server names ...

Ubuntu is a great system, but home users aren't ready to trade in Windows just yet. Why? They have no idea what Ubuntu is. They will dump Windows in a heartbeat if there's a reason to do so. We need some marketing to educate people why Ubuntu is a great choice for a desktop OS. The fact that Dell offers it on some models, and Best Buy will sell it in the store are great stepping stones.

Replace or Completely Redesign X Windowing System

Lets be honest here: X Org, in its current state, stinks.
Right now, if you are trying to set up an external monitor or configure a video card most tutorials send someone to manually configure an xorg.conf file. For some, thats not a big deal, after all they are very skilled at figuring out the correct syntax and successfully editing the file. For others they are very adept (or at least competent) at going out, finding where someone else has posted their XOrg.conf file and have copied the relative portions of the file to their own.
The problem I see is this: I have been using Ubuntu/Linux for over 2 years now. Getting an external monitor working on My work MacBook was one of the most frustrating experiences I have ever had in Linux. I edited more files, read more tutorials than I care to remember, and wasted an entire 12 hours trying to get an external monitor to work. After all that, I got so frustrated and gave up. Now, imagine if I were a new user. I would be frustrated and go tell everyone that Linux Sucks.
Getting screen settings and drivers to work CORRECTLY in Ubuntu can be one of the most frustrating experiences anyone can have.
The problem, as I see it, is this: Ubuntu/Debian/Linux in general keeps on putting band-aids on the problem rather than laying aside some pride and actually FIXING the problem. The problem is simple, we keep putting band-aids on XOrg rather than sitting down and admitting that what really needs to happen is that XOrg needs to be completely redesigned or replaced. I know that XOrg is used in most (if not all) Linux distributions, so this would require more than just Ubuntu doing it. It would require working with Linux Kernal devs and others upstream to make something that is rock-solid and reliable (and yes, I know that reliability takes time and effort).
What I see as the solution is this:
We need to start over, and re-design XOrg/windowing/compositing system from the ground up. XOrg worked great when most monitors were 800x600 or 1024x768). However, times have changed and the world has more monitors with more resolutions then XOrg and its developers can keep up with.
here is what I see as must-haves:

Please think about this logically.
This is idea was spawned from the book "wikinomics" it talks about Web 2.0 and collaboration, and it speaks a lot about Linux and how its grown. One of the examples they gave was that these new companies are allowing the end user to create the content or product. With that in mind...
There have been plenty of ideas including the statement " If you want people to leave Microsoft for linux, you have to change (insert idea here). The only problem is that the idea was written by someone use Ubuntu "Hardy", so does he really know what my computer illiterate mother needs in an OS to switch to Ubuntu. Why not just ask my Mother, would she would like to see her OS do. Get suggestions and ideas from her and many others on what to implement or improve, I know she would have to use Ubuntu to give ideas on what should be improved but if she were to say. It needs to connect to the internet seamlessly, then we could evaluate that part of Ubuntu.
So what I'm proposing here is to ask the people who actually use Windows and Mac what they would like to see in their OS. If you want more market share why not talk directly to the people your targeting. A set of questions or interview, or maybe some other way of communicating Brainstorm is all about developing ideas so help me develop, don't vote down just because of one thing. help improve it.
After everything send them a copy of the next Ubuntu release Intrepid Ibex or possibly even Hardy just depends on timing.
Lets not take an educated guess at what people want, lets straight up ask them.
regards Cheese

A new way to rank contributors

Before voting, Please read the entire proposal.
Currently we can see in the dashboard the "Overall Quality of my ideas" meter. Based on it, your rank (as contributor) is calculated as R = P - N, where P = number of positives votes, N = Number of negatives votes you've got so far.
What is the problem:
1. If you have P = 1000, and N = 500, your rank R1 = 500
2. If you have P = 501 and N = 1, your rank R2 = 500
Actually User1, has 50.00% of positive feedback, while User2 has 99.80%. Does everyone agrees User1 has better quality ideas comparing to User2 ? So why do they have the same rank as contributors?
Proposition:
1. Make a new rank based on R = 100 x P/(P + N).
This solves the previous issue but generates some collisions:
A. User3 has P = 500, and N = 200, so R = 40%
B. User4 has P = 10, and N = 4, so R = 40%
This happens because, though User3 has contributed more ideas it show the same balance as User4.
How to give a higher rank to users with the same balance but with a higher number of ideas ?
2. Make R = I x Q , where Q = P/(P + N), and I = total number of ideas contributed.
This solution ranks people based on the number of ideas they've contributed and still differentiate them by their acceptance balance.

launch "upgrade" ad campaign

I have a great idea for Ubuntu marketing: "Upgrade your life." Instead of specifically attacking Windows, as Apple does, Canonical should adopt an aggressive strategy that suggests Ubuntu is an upgrade from Windows and Mac. You need to point out the basics like Office-compatible apps, games, multimedia playback, stability, cost, etc... You do need to up the look and feel a bit to add some more eye candy before doing anything... I know a campaign like this takes money, but we all want Ubuntu to become a household name. The easiest way to approach this might be with strategic marketing through partners like Dell, but the campaign must be consistent throughout...

Adopt a 'N' click policy

Adopt a click policy to keep basic tasks super simple.
For example: let N equal 3. in 3 clicks, what can I do? Where can I go? What can't I do? Why can't I do that in 3 clicks? Is there any way we can make it so I can do that in 3 clicks?
Now, I understand you can't do a LOT of things in 3 clicks! this is just an example. But, the click policy might be something to keep in mind when choosing what software goes into Ubuntu :)
For Example:
In Firefox, I can get to my favorite websites in 2 clicks with the bookmarks menu. However, I can get to them in 1 click with the bookmarks toolbar.
In GNOME, I can launch any application very easily in 3 clicks from gnome-menu. However, I can launch my favorites with 1 click because of launchers on the desktop.
launching Gdebi from a package, I can usually install a .Deb package with 2 clicks. (counting a double-click as 1 click) In windows, I don't even know how many times you have to click to install an .exe XD

Synaptic is supposed to be an easy way to get program installed onto Ubuntu, but it can be overwhelming to a new user (yes, imagine that). What if synaptic was as easy to use as iTunes or Tivo. I think there should be a more simple version of synaptic that remove jargon like "dependencies", and "libraries". Two modes, "easy" and "regular". Include better descriptions, pictures if possible, and links to documentation, places to find support, information about its creator, etc...
OpenSUSE has things like one-click downloads why can't synaptic be that easy (yes I know its usually one click anyway). Spruce it up with a friendly design and welcoming interface.

This would be like restricted driver manager(maybe even an extension of it) but it would be for FREE/OSS *unstable* drivers.
There are a lots of hardware, take webcams for example, that mostly don`t have stable free or non-free drivers, BUT they have unstable ones, made by *hackers*. So if you buy a latop with a hardware like the ones I described above, the unstable driver manager would tell you this:
"You have this *piece of hardware* in your system, that doesn`t have any stable driver available for ubuntu. However, there is an unstable driver that MIGHT work, but be very carefull, it is UNSTABLE, it is very dangerous, and can destroy your system, and/or cause World War 3 to happen, use it at your own risk. If you survived this attempt please send feedback to hacker_who_made_this_driver@email.me.".
Keep in mind, there are a lot of hardware(mostly laptops) that don`t have stable drivers for linux. And there are a lot of people, who buy hardware that have these proplems(mostly they can`t even check if it`s compatible or not) who would try and/or use (k/x)ubuntu but don`t know/ or don`t even care how to google for Device ID all day, read forum posts and compile drivers.
