Support the Gnash project
Written by howlingmadhowie the 29 Feb 08 at 08:36. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
adobe flash has become ridiculously slow. it's perverse that i can play a dvd in full screen mode and that uses about 5% of my processor, while as a small flash window on youtube stutters. as well as this, there is of course no 64-bit version, or a version for sparc/powerpc under linux.

the solution is obvious--gnash must be developed. could canonical/ubuntu invest some development time in getting gnash working well? that would be great :)

create a symlink ~/Desktop when using a foreign language to install.
Written by sammyf70 the 1 Mar 08 at 13:40. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Should probably be a bug report.
When you setup something other than English as your default language during the installation, a directory called "Bureau" is created. Whilst this is an accurate translation, it can cause confusion for users when they are looking for help online, and for some programs who write to "~/Desktop"nevertheless.(tested with FRENCH. I just guess it's the same with other languages)

By default, create a symbolic link "~/Desktop" pointing to the translated name if the language has been set to anything but english during the installation.

Change the ubuntu brainstorm logo to use a compact fluorescent bulb
Written by andrewpmk the 1 Mar 08 at 02:25. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Incandescent light bulbs are obsolete and soon to be banned in many countries. We should change the light bulb in the ubuntu brainstorm logo to an energy-saving Compact Fluorescent light bulb. :)

Include a graphical frontend to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst installed by default

Right now, the most likely successful migrations to Ubuntu happen for *nix experts and total novices who have someone install Ubuntu for them, but the most likely people to try Ubuntu are Windows power users--those who like a lot of configuration options but who are also used to using the GUI for tweaking options and not manually editing a text configuration file.

The most popular requests for editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file involve changing the default boot option (to Windows instead of Ubuntu) and changing the timeout before a boot option is selected. The other less popular ones would be just bonus features, I guess.

Change start page of Brainstorm to show latest ideas or something, else people will probably push for the already high-graded ideas and won't care of other newer ideas.

Maybe a page with random ideas?

And remove the grades if not specifically requested, since it will affect peoples voting.

Developer comments
New front page, with a descending (nb of votes)/(time since creation) sorting.
This way, the newest ideas have their chance to stand up!

LiveUSB
Written by Taku the 28 Feb 08 at 14:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
cdroms are slow, don't allow to modify their content easily, they are weak and not as easy to carry as USB keys.

It would be great to provide Ubuntu as a liveUSB just as Mandriva does. We should be able to carry our distribution on any computer, manage our preferred settings (do I want binary drivers enabled ? what is my preferred resolution ?), etc.

The thing is not to make something transportable, but really a nomad system that could be used just the best way as it could on any computer.

Developer comments
This was implemented by two separate projects! Both Usb-creator (see the blueprint) and Usblive (see its website) allow you to build a live USB system on Intrepid.
The first one is available on the repository, and usblive in this PPA.

Integrate openclipart.org into OO
Written by cr4a the 29 Feb 08 at 19:02. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
OpenOffice doesn't have a very good integrated clipart repository. How about integrating something like openclipart.org or some other Creative Commons licensed art or icon library?

Graphical display of disk space available on each partition
Written by grimko the 29 Feb 08 at 23:05. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When displaying the partitions inside a file explorer such as Nautilus, it would be interesting to see the equivalent of the "df -h" data, that is to say the disk space available on each partition.
The way it is displayed on Vista, with a completion bar, and a different color if it gets close to full state would also be very handy.

Ubuntu "Boot Camp", simple VM
Written by drumcat the 29 Feb 08 at 22:43. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Take the same approach as Apple, and work with Windows as a subservient option. Officially support installing Windows in a second partition, etc., such that when someone has to work in Windows, it's a simple process to boot into it.

This may be available now, but it's not EASY, or GUIDED. It should be.

BRAINSTORM: Add HOT, or recommended section like on Reddit
Written by berlinbrown the 29 Feb 08 at 22:10. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It seems like it will be hard to navigate through brainstorm. There are some links that will stay at the top because they have the highest rating and the system seems to be sorted by rating. Which basically means, you will have to go to page 50 to see anything really new or emerging.

If you visit reddit.com. They have a HOT home page where hot topics fill up on the page and are added or removed over time once they lose popularity.

If it stays this way forever; we will see the "hibernate" idea which has 2000+ points for a LONG time.

Partner with big name game developers
Written by heavyal the 29 Feb 08 at 22:32. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is total pie in the sky but it would be great to see some kind of partnership with the big gaming companies such as EA, Blizzard, Bethesda or some such where we could actually work with them in bringing their outstanding game releases to our platform.

Developer comments
This cannot be done just by the Ubuntu community or Canonical alone. The only true way to achieve any action by the big commercial game developers is to have (lots and lots of) individual gamers contact the support-teams of those companies and demand that they want to be able to play their games natively on their Ubuntu machines. They have to point out that native really means a native port and not one of those half-hearted wine-solutions. id Software and Epic can do it so it cannot be that hard. There are even first rumours that Valve is planning to port their Source-engine natively to Linux.

---
I don't think Wine ports count as "half-hearted". When Wine supports the application, a Wine port is fully functional and full speed - what more could you want?

Another Brainstorming Search Order
Written by jsatkanpak the 29 Feb 08 at 20:39. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
"Most Popular Ideas" is not necessarily the most useful search. It could be that these ideas have been around a long time, so have had more votes.

I would rename the current "Most Popular" to "Most Voted For" and make the "Most Popular" list report the order in (# of votes over time listed). This would allow very recent posts that are getting a lot of votes to appear at the top of the list.

Otherwise, the newer posts seem to slide into oblivion on the "Latest Ideas" search, regardless of actual user interest.

-Just like in Ubuntu Forums- when posting, the system should look for similar titles of ideas, to avoid duplication.

Provide a simple graphical interface to manage _any_ type of network connection

At the moment it's possible to manage traditional wired and WiFi connections using Network Manager. To connect via a modem, a 3G/GPRS card, over bluetooth to a cell phone or via USB to another device requires that the user installs extra packages, and does a fair amount of configuration that isn't found in Network Manager.

A single unified tool should be provided which allows the user to connect to a network (or internet) via any supported method. It would also be useful to provide an extension to this tool to manage firewall rules and network connection sharing.

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.

Thank you for reading.
