Add an option to filter ideas based on a "number of votes received" threshold. I.e. you can set the threshold to -10 and then automatically not see ideas with votes below that number.

Combine this with idea 2161 - hide/show ideas you've already voted on and idea 1335 (add an "I don't really care" option) so that you can make ideas hide without voting on it.

That way people a more likely to vote on more ideas then just the most popular ones or most recent ones!

[-28] Ubuntu should become a Technology Champion

The problem with Linux is that there's often a lot of quantity, but not necessarily quality. I would like Ubuntu to choose "best of breed" software, and start pushing them - partly by dedicated Ubuntu dev support, and partly by bounties, but preferably by real paid commissioning of work. And they could have an "Ubuntu recommends" section.

Take my experience with trying to find a development environment for Ubuntu, for example. I toyed around with various things, and eventually thought that Anjuta would be a good bet. So I installed it. I tried to create a Glade project, but it caused Anjuta to crash. Googling around, I found that this is a known issue. A fix is available, that's true - but there really needs to be more polish than this.

I noticed a few suggestions about video editors in brainstorm, too. There are many choices for Linux, but most of them have niggling flaws. I would like to see these addressed.

I know what you're thinking - Linux is about choice. But I would rather see one 100% solution than two 50% solutions.

Currently there isn't much to find about Brainstorm at the Ubuntu website. And if the website is becoming more and more well known and used, it will require a lot more attention. I suggest to create something like the BugControl team to look after the ideas so the most useful idea will appear on top.
At least there need to be more information available about Brainstorm, because it's a website with a great potential, which shouldn't be wasted.

The main advantage of windows system and software over linux is that there is usually no need to configure anything. You install it - it works. Without reading pages and pages of docs and writing strings and strings in config file. Works out of the box. This is a very important feature for any user-friendly desktop oriented system, and this way it's a very important feature of Ubuntu itself.

As a user I want to be able to listen to audio or watch videos with the least amount of setup. I would like to have a single interface (Codec Manager) that lists all of the most common audio and video formats and shows me if I am missing the necessary codec for playback.

Use Case: Enable MP3 playback.
Precondition: MP3s are not currently playable.
1. User logs into the system.
2. User opens the Codec Manager.
3. System displays a list of common audio/video formats.
4. User selects MP3s.
5. System displays some info about MP3s.
6. System displays a list of available codecs.
7. User selects a codec and clicks Apply.
8. System downloads and installs the selected codec.
9. System informs the user when completed.

Other possible features:
- Display a list of audio/video types that are missing codecs.
- An auto-setup function, that grabs the recommended codec for all formats.

Audio and Video formats that should be supported:

Audio:
- MP3
- OGG
- AAC
- FLAC
- Real Audio

Video:
- MP4
- Windows Media
- XVID
- DIVX
- Quicktime
- Real Video

Ubuntu is a great system but without any professional look. The brown look is not the point. The point are the icons. They all are very comic-like. We don't need a distribution for kids, we need a distribution for business and office. Take a look at windows or mac osx. They have a professional looking icon set, professional colors. It's not that funny looking comic-like style. I guess for success of ubuntu in businesses a more stylish look is very important. No professional enterprise wants to show funny desktops. And no: OpenSuSE or Fedora are not much better. This is a general problem in the linux community.
