Improve Ubuntu brainstorm website
Written by petrojn the 1 Mar 08 at 13:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

Add an option to filter ideas based on a "number of votes received" threshold. I.e. you can set the threshold to -10 and then automatically not see ideas with votes below that number.

Combine this with idea 2161 - hide/show ideas you've already voted on and idea 1335 (add an "I don't really care" option) so that you can make ideas hide without voting on it.

That way people a more likely to vote on more ideas then just the most popular ones or most recent ones!

Ubuntu should become a Technology Champion
Written by mcturra2000 the 1 Mar 08 at 13:56. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The problem with Linux is that there's often a lot of quantity, but not necessarily quality. I would like Ubuntu to choose "best of breed" software, and start pushing them - partly by dedicated Ubuntu dev support, and partly by bounties, but preferably by real paid commissioning of work. And they could have an "Ubuntu recommends" section.

Take my experience with trying to find a development environment for Ubuntu, for example. I toyed around with various things, and eventually thought that Anjuta would be a good bet. So I installed it. I tried to create a Glade project, but it caused Anjuta to crash. Googling around, I found that this is a known issue. A fix is available, that's true - but there really needs to be more polish than this.

I noticed a few suggestions about video editors in brainstorm, too. There are many choices for Linux, but most of them have niggling flaws. I would like to see these addressed.

I know what you're thinking - Linux is about choice. But I would rather see one 100% solution than two 50% solutions.

Consider switching to a GTKWebKit based browser in the near future
Written by HOMBRESINIESTRO the 1 Mar 08 at 13:59. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gecko is bloated and slow. A WebKit port for GTK is available and looks really great: http://www.atoker.com/blog/2008/02/26/developing-hybrid-web-gtk-applications/

WebKit is fast, small and well integrated (Check out the link above).

Consider switching to a webkit-based browser as a standard in the future.

Getting involved in Brainstorm
Written by qense the 1 Mar 08 at 14:12. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Currently there isn't much to find about Brainstorm at the Ubuntu website. And if the website is becoming more and more well known and used, it will require a lot more attention. I suggest to create something like the BugControl team to look after the ideas so the most useful idea will appear on top.
At least there need to be more information available about Brainstorm, because it's a website with a great potential, which shouldn't be wasted.

Get bbc listen again working as standard
Written by alastairthegreat the 1 Mar 08 at 14:23. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The BBC iplayer now works, however the BBC's 'listen again' feature (which allows users to listen to any radio show from the last 7 days) still does not. Nor is there an easily available bug fix for this. This is dissuading people from switching to ubuntu, this should run as standard.

In just works principle
Written by varnav the 1 Mar 08 at 10:22. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The main advantage of windows system and software over linux is that there is usually no need to configure anything. You install it - it works. Without reading pages and pages of docs and writing strings and strings in config file. Works out of the box. This is a very important feature for any user-friendly desktop oriented system, and this way it's a very important feature of Ubuntu itself.

Support MP3 and DIVX on default installation
Written by dennyxx82 the 1 Mar 08 at 09:58. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
That could happen after installation of ubuntu does not have an internet connection, I find it very annoying not to have software that reads divx and mp3. We could install VideoLan default or Gstreamer plug-in

Codec Manager
Written by intarwub the 29 Feb 08 at 00:32. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
As a user I want to be able to listen to audio or watch videos with the least amount of setup. I would like to have a single interface (Codec Manager) that lists all of the most common audio and video formats and shows me if I am missing the necessary codec for playback.

Use Case: Enable MP3 playback.
Precondition: MP3s are not currently playable.
1. User logs into the system.
2. User opens the Codec Manager.
3. System displays a list of common audio/video formats.
4. User selects MP3s.
5. System displays some info about MP3s.
6. System displays a list of available codecs.
7. User selects a codec and clicks Apply.
8. System downloads and installs the selected codec.
9. System informs the user when completed.

Other possible features:
- Display a list of audio/video types that are missing codecs.
- An auto-setup function, that grabs the recommended codec for all formats.

Audio and Video formats that should be supported:

Audio:
- MP3
- OGG
- AAC
- FLAC
- Real Audio

Video:
- MP4

[....]

Attacks the problem from the wrong angle. I don't think many users would care about a "codec manager", that sounds very much like a geek tool. Heck, *I* wouldn't care about a codec manager. I care about watching my videos. :-)

To me this already seems solved very elegantly with the existing easy-codec-installation.

Better wi-fi support
Written by neilneil2000 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:20. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
More support for more wireless chipsets out of the box and "Windows style" ease of set up.

I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!

Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

DirectX
Written by rieping the 29 Feb 08 at 18:19. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Abandonware is a good idea, but number one way to get gamers is DirectX support. Games is the number one reason why I don't switch over to Linux. I have 5 computers in the house and I dabble with Linux on one of them. I have a game library going back over 15 years, and if I want to dust one off and play it, I can with my windows machine, luv DOSBOX, but don't get me wrong, I hate Microsoft. I would dump Microsoft in a second.
The problem is DirectX games. If I go to Walmart and pick up the latest 5 star game, I don't have to ask myself will it run (except Vista only games) on my XP box. I've spent more time trying to get a game run on Linux then it takes to beat the game :(
I have no problem with proprietary code in Linux, I just want it to work, "Git R Done"

Put a size limit on Trash
Written by cr4a the 29 Feb 08 at 19:03. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Put a size limit on Trash, so it gets emptied automatically after it gets above 1GB (or whatever). You could also empty it on a time schedule, or automatically delete files over a certain age.

Professional look
Written by miketech the 29 Feb 08 at 19:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is a great system but without any professional look. The brown look is not the point. The point are the icons. They all are very comic-like. We don't need a distribution for kids, we need a distribution for business and office. Take a look at windows or mac osx. They have a professional looking icon set, professional colors. It's not that funny looking comic-like style. I guess for success of ubuntu in businesses a more stylish look is very important. No professional enterprise wants to show funny desktops. And no: OpenSuSE or Fedora are not much better. This is a general problem in the linux community.

Easier non-free software install
Written by imneuromancer the 29 Feb 08 at 22:48. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For many, this guide (http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfect_desktop_ubuntu_gutsy_gibbon) contains all of the steps to getting a usable desktop. This is mostly proprietary, non-free software that adds to the experience and is currently hard to

At install (or some EASY option post install) it should be single clicks away to add:

1) mediabuntu and/or full codec packs
2) MS true type fonts
3) Adobe Reader or other similar software
4) Sun Java
5) NTFS config tools
6) realplayer
7) etc,

Disable IPV6
Written by M1r4g3 the 29 Feb 08 at 22:17. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Disable the IPV6 when installing, or at least give the choice to the user:
some Java applets don't deal very much with ipv6, causing the applet not to start / to crash.
To disable ipv6, the module ipv6 has to be blacklisted. And a reboot is necessary. Very bad experience!

I would donate a Dollar for a FREE fully-featured FLASH plugin
Written by elias1884 the 29 Feb 08 at 22:29. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If you would donate a Dollar or more for a fully-featured but free and open source alternative to Adobe's Flash plugin, then vote "+" for this idea.

Please do NOT vote "-" if you would not donate a cent. Just leave it alone!

There is not negative dollar in real life either. We don't want to vote but count dollars here! Unfortunately, there is no facility for that in Brainstorm yet, so we have to do it that way. Please play along and don't sabotage it with "-" votes!

By the way, there is an idea to support donating money to ideas. Please support it!

Improve Synaptics
Written by ddimaio the 29 Feb 08 at 22:32. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Synaptics is great, however
- it would need a much improved graphics
- it would need to be more responsive, especially at start
- it should be a bit more user-friendly

Brainstorm: have some superpoints
Written by yorian the 29 Feb 08 at 21:08. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Wouldn't it be great to be able to give some more points to an idea that you really really like? Most of the ideas here are nice, but some ideas are -really- great and original. It would be great if I had some, say 10 in a week, extra points that I could give to an idea.
