Include OpenOffice 3 in interpid

It seems that for interpid openoffice 2.4 is planed as the office suite. I use openoffice 3 beta 2 every day and it seems that this ab is very stable. So I propose that you include the 3.0 version or an RC of it in the final interpid.
They have made really a lot of improvements and everyone will benefit of it.
I know that you would have to create a packet yourself and can't just import from debian, but I would really appreciate your work.

Ubuntu Brainstorm should make it possible to vote for idea deletion

The reason for this is to unclutter Ubuntu Brainstorm.
Some ideas submitted are not applicable, or are already existing although the poster didn't know about them.
It should be possible mark an idea for deletion instead of just voting it down, but it should be well distinguished from voting down an idea. Perhaps users must click on the idea to be able to mark it for deletion.

Make a JavaScript command-line interface interpreter that you can invoke via a shell script.
#!/usr/bin/javascript
Then you can use JavaScript (which is becoming increasingly popular) in shell scripts.

System Wide Equalizer

A good Equalizer is a must for all audiophiles while Exaile has one it is limited and likewise audacious. Rather than having to stick with one app to provide this why not implement a system wide equalizer
A system wide equalizer would allow users to use the audio player of their choice and still have full control over audio output
This would be particularly usefull for laptop users or those that use headphones as audio setup can sound awful when switched from an external sound system to either headphones or laptop speakers.
The equalizer should have some quick presets that the user could configure and switch between easily e.g:
Desktop Speakers
Headphones
Powered Speakers
(perhaps a headphone selection could automatically select when headphones are plugged in)

This may sound as very small issue, but what is more annoying than having a Microsoft logo in the keyboard?
Why in the hell some keyboard manufacturers, having nothing related to Microsoft, are still selling keyboards with a Microsoft logo in a key? It's completelly nonsense...
Btw, i think shop.canonical.com should sell also 'winkey-free' keyboards as well! ;-)

Implement at least one idea from every category in the next Ubuntu version

For the next Ubuntu version, make a commitment to implement at least one idea out of the top five for every category.
Of course we know developers look at the brainstorm results and sometimes comment on them, but I think it would be a good idea to make a solid commitment like this acknowledging what Ubuntu's users want.

htm/html files thumbnails in Nautilus

I was wondering if there is any solution based upon the firefox engine (but not only, I'm not sure how this can be done), to show thumbnails of HTM, HTML, SHTML files,
most probably as the SVG files can be previewed in thumbnails.
I think this might be useful not only for web designers, developers, but also for simple users that may keep them electronic books in HTML format, or README, INSTALL files.
Let's face it a lot of documentation can be stored in HTML.
Thanks guys!

Work with Google to receive an advanced Linux version of Google Chrome so you can package it and put it in the repositories at the same time of the release.

Hi all,
Power settings can turn off the screen for saving energy and turn it on when mouse is moved or a mouse/keyboard button is pressed.
Why don't disable screen saver when power settings turn off the screen? it would make ubuntu more "green" because it won't use the CPu or the GPU for processing drawing for the screensaver.
As always comments are accepted
If you want take a look to my others idea

easier tools for making .deb files

Since start using Ubuntu, i started to got curious on how can i make my own .deb files.
Well, i can imagine most of you when reading this seems to be about on sticking here some Debian or Ubuntu tutorial links about it, but mostly are too complicated or messy, specially when the process of making .deb files is not much more than packaging some non-executable documents.
The easier ways i found on making .deb were:
1. using alien over .tar.gz tarballs (but it lacks on very important 'control' information for the databases, like dependencies, description, etc.)
2. using a .sh with plenty of 'echo' and 'ar' commands, but it can create corrupt .deb files, and so incompatible with gdebi, dpkg and so on...
My idea would be being able to create a .deb file from a tool like FileRoller, but of course all suggestions and reccomendations of new tools i may not know are hugelly welcome! =)
(in meanwhile, i'm getting stuck into creating tarballs, and expanding them with 'tar -zxvf tarball.tar.gz -C /')

Protect Ubuntu-users privacy from curious governments

In Sweden, as well as in the US, as far as I understood there are now new legislation coming up that seriously compromises the privacy of the users.
In Sweden we have two very worrying laws coming up.
1. The "FRA-law" that gives the Swedish security police the right to wiretapp and datamine ALL international data traveling through Sweden.
2. The "Logging-law". Telco operators will be obliged to collect all information about their users whereabouts and keep that information for a year.
We have to work towards the aim: Security by default - and I'm not talking about the system, but to protect our datastreams from being wiretapped.
Me personally think that PKI is the solution to use here whereever possible. IF a session to/from a Ubuntu-system could be read in clear text the user/administrator should be aware of it.
Postfix is important here, Dovecot as well - all emails should be send over encrypted channels by default.
Mark Shuttleworth with his huge knowledge in Digital Certificates (He sold Thawte remember) would be of great help here.
I would like to see Mark Shuttleworth and Ubuntu leverage an infrastructure and create services to provide their community with a good, PKI-based solution.
Privacy matters
Sincerely
Niklas Andersson, Swedish TechWorld Open Source
Edit: I've made a proposition of a real-world-implementation of a very viable way to solve the email issue at a user-level.

choosing mouse button behaviour like BeOS

At mouse preferences you can choose mouse orientation between right-handed or left-handed.
On BeOS-5 (from 10 years ago) you can choose what you want for each mouse button - you can have the left-button function for all mouse buttons if you want, and so on.
As well, BeOS allow you to use one-button apple-like mices, using ctrl+click as right click (now i'm using f12 key as right button from mouseemu package, what is a bit weird to use...)

"Contribute to Ubuntu" Wizard

There are some well integrated and simple to use possibilities to contribute to ubuntu, but they are in different places, and too "good hidden" from a common user.
I would pick up this all to the "Contribute to Ubuntu" Wizard, with the follow steps/items:
1) "First Step"
"The First Step is just using or trying Ubuntu and it's probably done by You ;)"
2) "Hardware Testing" (actually reachable under "System/Administration/Hardware Testing")
with a short description and the run button
3) "Application Use Statistics" (actually reachable under "System/Administration/Software Sources/Statistics")
also with a short description and the related check box
4) "Help Translate"
with a short description and where it is to find:
a) the menu "Help/Translate this application" in the most applications
b) link to the launchpad "Rosetta"
5) "Help Fix Bugs"
with a short description, where it is to find:
a) the menu "Help/Report a Problem" in the most applications
b) link to the launchpad "Malone"
And the option "Install Applications with Debugging Information (dbg-packages) automatically":
it's new one, if you select this option, you always will get dbg-packages for new applications, if available, and (maybe as a second option) all yet installed will be replaced. For example the "nautilus" package will be replaced with the "nautilus-dbg" package. It can be very usefull, if you have errors you cannot reproduce, and installation of the debugging version doesn't make unfortunately any sense after that...
6) "How Can I Contribute Else"
any further information with related links
The wizard runner can be placed in the "System" menu.

Mirror (to see yourself) in Compiz

If people have webcams, I think its a nice idea to have a face of the cube that is actually a mirror, that is to see yourself in full screen. So let's say you want to have a quick check on yourself, you do "ctrl + alt + up" and it changes to the mirror. Im saying compiz because it can actually make the whole cube more useful, but it can be a separate piece of software, that can be nicely integrated with a good shortcut.

The openoffice is a excelente suite of office, but the Developers will need improve your performance, some tools and the look and feels to improve the usability and productivity of users.
Exemple 1: Openoffice delay too much to open the first session and after this your performance is also slow (open files for exemple).
Exemple 2: Copy the rows and paste it how "insert rows copied", now we copy the rows, after this we need insert the same rows and then past de rows copied.
Exemple 3: Freeze, remember, record the last color used in the Font colors and Background color.
I used openoffice 3 beta 1 for 2 months but isn't good enough to users that work very quite with this suite.
Please, Help sun developers to improve openoffice.

Forbid voting for duplicates

Only voting for the "leading" idea should be allowed, not for it's duplicates.
There are some reasons for this:
- people sometimes vote (good) ideas down just because it is a duplicate.
- It would help solve the problem of double votes.
- ATM you have comments spread all over 3-4 ideas which would be more convenient haveing them in one together.
- people are more lead to the leading idea and don't give the duplicates that much importance
The way launchpad works is really good.

I love the ubuntu font, only problem is the fact some characters are non existent such as the "%" sign, and the fact there are no capitals, I wish there was. but why not include the font in the iso image? or at least fix the font then possibly make it default for most things used in ubuntu.
