Some of the users still think that kde 4.1 or 4.2(on the kubuntu release) is not mature enough for their desktop needs.
Please offer both kde 3.5.10 and kde 4.2 on the next kubuntu release.

Another take on installing without root

This is an attempt to submit brainstorm 10644 as a workable idea, that will actually achieve the goals elie stated.
Modify the install process to use one of three privileged accounts, as follows:
1. Any package which needs to install something suid, or needs to touch /etc, /bin, /lib, or /var (excluding, of course, the actual package files) still requires root to install. (Simple heuristics: If it's not all going in /usr, it touches root so requires root. Only root can su without a password, so suid requires root.)
2. Any other package can either be installed using the 'bin' user or using the 'local' user. If it's installed using the 'bin' user, it is put into /usr, the way most packages are installed today.
3. If it's installed using the 'local' user, it's installed into /usr/local. (The only change from the current paths is that 'local' is inserted right after /usr; the structure otherwise is retained.) Any package installed using the 'local' user tracks which user installed it. Only that user or someone with either 'bin' or 'root' access can uninstall it.
With this setup, one could then use sudo(1) or a similar program to manage who can install programs, and at what level. Note that dpkg would need to some modifications. One possibility could be have it store the package database information with acls to allow both 'bin' and 'local' update it. (This could be simplified slightly by having 'bin' own the database.)
There would need to be some key constraints:
A. Only root could install files without entering a password to do so.
B. The 'bin' and 'local' users would need a shell that prevents general command execution. I'd recommend a custom shell which invoked aptitude, synaptic, or another package manager depending on environment and what is installed.

Better&More software for Ubuntu

There are some very good step to popularize Ubuntu (cooperation with Intel, presentation in big expositions etc etc) but this is not enough!
If you have a good operation system without softwares what you can use under this operation system then nobody will use this operations system!
Therefore i think somehow the different kind of software companies should be convinced to write professional softwares for Ubuntu too(picture, movie, sound-editors; multimedia softwares; softwares for programing; for different applications; games etc etc).
There is a good site from where you can download a lot of good things( http://www.getdeb.net/) but this is not enough!

When I read the ideas, most of the time I am curious to know where the users are from, so the idea is to:
- OPTIONALLY have a little flag attached to the side of your name specifying your nationality!
- In the future it could be useful to see where is ubuntu receiving more contributions from.
- We could see also which countries are having more problems with language, accessibility an so on.
Off course, if you don't want your country represented you may just hide it naturally.
-----------------------------------------
Hello, no need for more negatives here! I had already lerned the lesson that nationality is the worst thing in the world and very harmful for this forum even optionally.
Furthermore, once an idea gets negative, no way to recover since people see the negative number before voting :-(

It is possible to press ctrl+alt+backspace by mistake. There should be a question asking "Are you sure you want to restart X?" before doing it I believe. I hate those sort of questions but sometimes they are necessary when there is the risk of loosing data!

Merge some of KDE4.1 with KDE4.0.x

I know that KDE4.1 beta is slowly coming to Kubuntu but other distros like OpenSuSE are using some of KDE4.1 in Their 4.0.x
I know that oppose to OpenSuSE Kubunu has only one paid developer, so I will understand if this idea will be dismissed.
What Opensuse has that we don't:
- Opensuse gives a consistent and clean nice look from boot to login
- a working alt+F2 kdesu+app (kate, konqueror, etc)
- a working mover for all elements on the panel
- an add panel function (it works) from right click on desktop
- a change plasma-theme function from right click on desktop>configure desktop
- numlock enabled on login
- a trashcan widget
- a kickoff / kmenu editor function built in.
===========================================================
I attached Kubuntu Forum topic where this is was first brought up. Hope that KDE4.1 beta comes soon to Kubuntu and that it will be as well integrated as in other KDE distros.
KDE4.1 Beta New features in KDE4.1 (no Compiz needed). Look on which OS's it runs why Kubuntu isn't one of them???

Allow install multiple UNIX kernels (Linux/BSD/OpenSolaris/Hurd)

I know that it would be hard but why don't offer support several UNIX kernels in the Ubuntu OS?
It would be awesome to join Ubuntu comunity with BSD and project Nexenta ( http://www.nexenta.org/os) guys.
Later, when GNU/Hurd is completed it would be great to include that kernel as an option to the users.
I'm not talking about making more versions of Ubuntu, I'm talking about allow users to have installed several kernels in their machines and choose what they want to use.
NOTE: if you downvote the idea, please tell me why. Thanks.

KDE to OS X or Windows Interface Familiarity to Help New Adopters

Short Version:
During Kubuntu installation have an option to make your default interface like the default (2 options, Kubuntu or KDE4), OS X (2 options, Leopard or Tiger), or Windows (2 options, XP or Vista).
Long Version:
As it stands there are basic options like common menu bar, but that needs to be made more involved. With the new KWin graphics in KDE4 it should be simpler.
I'd love to check an option during install for "I am used to OS X, make me feel at home". Then when it boots up, I've got the common semi-transparent menu bar, a nice refective dock, smooth transitions and transparencies, and so on.
This would make it an easier sell for my Mom or tech-inept friends who don't like change. Also for people like me who like Linux/BSD but love the polish of OS X.
This would be a great thing to upstream to the KDE guys so BSD and any other *nix FOSS people could use it too!
With the great progress coming in apps, it won't be long before digiKam/Amarok/KOffice/Konqueror are joined by others that with this could have commercials with the pc and mac guy and say..."I'm just as good or better then Mac guy, but FREE!"

Ubuntu 32 bit should support more than 4GB of RAM

It seems that the current 32 bit editions of Ubuntu can only take advantage of 3GB (sometimes a little more) of physical memory. Desktops and gaming rigs using 6 and 8 GB of RAM are ubiquitous now. More RAM support please!!
It seems that this is related to the Linux kernel. However, some apps are not yet ready for 64 bit support. The kernel should be more flexible for people still in the 32bit editions.

Some people would be more comfortable with this stuff. It also may help migration of new users from other operating systems.
For those who wants to hide these icons, it would be a good solution to add a special tab into gnome-display-propertis where users could check and uncheck icons they want on the desktop.

I suggest to use mouse doubleclick at empty space. It must be user-selectable as follow:
do nothing;
create empty text file;
create new folder;
make a sticky note (for desktop)
or so.
(added) Why dislike this? Please drop a line. By default it's never doubleclicks. Only option.

It think, default icon size should be set to 75% of current size by default. It would more closely resemble icon size in Windows, KDE and other desktop environments and operating systems.
This also would leave more free space on your desktop.

New category in Brainstorm: Strange
--------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see there are a lot of ideas (even other than just these two I linked my idea to) that demand a category "fun".
While I'm all for joke ideas or funny ideas or ideas that are just strange. I think they DON'T have any place on Ubuntu Brainstorm.
That's why I propose to make an parody community driven site called "Ubuntu Braindead" or something similar where this kind of ideas could be posted.
Like Uncyclopedia is for Wikipedia or any Linux ranting blog or forum (like Linux Hater and Linsux...)
We all know that Brainstorms source code is open so if this would be realised we could use its code.
This site dosen't need to be connected or moderated by Ubuntu brainstorm moderators. It should be user moderated.
So there should be no worry that Brainstorm mods would be occupied by such stupid things.
Maybe an link would be OK, to prevent "joke" submission to Ubuntu Brainstorm.
If this idea would be generally accepted the site would need an server, it dosen't need to be an server hosted by Canonical or Ubuntu, if there are worries that it would eat up precious space that could be used for something else.
Please comment on what do you think about that.
I think this is the best way to resolve some who want to propose strange, fun or just stupid ideas.

Each and every software/utility should have a graphical interface. For this, we can have live rendering of GUI according to the switches and options available for that command.
We can make use of the help and manuals available for that command.
Stress on the real-time creation of the GUI rather than a GUI for every command.

in russian below, sorry...

A new partition type for games

There are beginning to be enough games available for the linux platform, that having a separate partition for all of them might be a good idea. This new type of partition would be designed with speed in mind. Maybe a journaling system that can defragment and only do so when nothing else is going on in the system. Another simpler method might just be to use a ext4 file system for the game partition.

Whenever I log out of my account and log back in to update the menu the garbage bin disappears. If anyone else has this same issue I was wondering what the cause of it is. This isn't something very serious but I do feel it needs looking into. My idea behind this is to have a section for reporting bugs and allowing people on brainstorm to vote on the ones they want fixed the most.

Make a GNOME skin for KDE
The look and feel of KDE is just *sigh*. Ok for those who like it, but KDE kept me away from the linux desktop for as long as it exists.. Just not my thing those BIG ICONS and HUGE CLOCK, grouped buttons on top of eachother, screenfilling menu's. KDE screems to me where GNOME is just there for me.
GNOME has more soul.
Or bring the good things of KDE to GNONE.
